Forgotten Melodies of the 1940s – 19
———————————————————

GEET GOVIND (1947) was produced under the banner of Kanu Desai Productions and was directed by Ramchandra Thakur. The star cast included Prem Adib, Leela Desai, Sulochana Chatterjee, David, Bhagwan Das, Ram Singh, Pesi Patel, Kantilal, Rampiyari etc. There were 14 songs in the film penned by Pandit Indra (11) and Balam Pardesi (3) which were set to music by Gyan Dutt. The film was released on 3rd January 1948 at Majestic Cinema in Bombay (Mumbai).

From the title of the film, it is apparent that the film was based on the epic poem ‘Geeta Govinda’ written by the 12th century Sanskrit poet Jayadeva, depicting the divine love of Radha and Krishna. This work is considered to be an important milestone in the Bhakti movement of Hinduism.

One of the commercial risks in producing films based on the the high calibre classics like Kadambari, Meghdoot, Shankutala is how to convert them into cinematic presentations which would be of interest to general audience without diluting the original stories in the prose or poems. In the case of Geeta Govinda, there was another problem in cinematic presentations in that some of the poems were erotic. In 1948, when upholding public moral was high on the agenda of the Censor Board , there was a likelihood that the film may get stuck with the Censor Board if the director of the film was to go with the intent of the poems. So if one goes by the available songs of the film, the director and the dialogue writer seem to have diluted the epic work of the poet Jayadeva to a level acceptable both to the Censor Board and to the front benchers.

As I mentioned earlier, there were 14 songs in the film of which I could locate 3 songs on YT. Two songs from this movie have been covered in the Blog in the past. In addition, I could locate the mp3 clips of another three songs. I have heard all the available songs and I can say that all the six songs have been composed based on Hindustani classical music in keeping with the theme of the film.

Today, I am presenting ‘chhod sakhi aaj laaj kaahe jiya dharke’ sung by Manna Dey and Rajkumari. The song is penned by Pandit Indra Chandra. Since I could not locate the song on YT, I have created a video of the mp3 clip of the song and uploaded the same on YT.

Manna sounds like Pankaj Mallik.

Does anyone know if the movie is lost? I can’t seem to be able to watch it. If it was a Ranjit Picture film then it is for sure gone forever. Ranjit Movietone burned all there films in an insurance fraud fire in 1950.

The singers in this movie are Miss Sharada, Gayatri, Rajkumari, Rekharani, Manna Dey, Ghulam Mustafa. The only singer I haven’t heard of before is Rekharani. She sang in only one other film. She is not the same person as Miss Rekha.
