Produced by Ajanta Arts, Bombay and directed by hero Sunil Dutt himself, ‘Reshma Aur Shera’ in the year 1971 had the star cast of Sunil Dutt, Waheeda Rehman, Vinod Khanna, Raakhee, Amitabh Bachchan, Jayant, Sulochana, KN Singh, Amrish Puri, Dulari, Sudhir, BB Bhalla, Baby Guddi, Ustad Dev Dutt, Saira Lokhandwala, Nisha Sharma, Ranjit, Naval Kumar, Prem Kumar, Rajinder Pal, Padma Khanna etc.
Four lyricist viz, Balkavi Bairagi, Neeraj, Uddhav Kumar and Rajinder Krishna wrote the songs that were set to tune by Genius Jaidev, who was assisted by Shamrao, Gyan and Pyarelal.
There were six songs according to HFGK and five of them are already covered in this wonderful blog. This final song from the movie is a qawwaali which is sung by Manna Dey and chorus. Manna Dey is always remembered and summoned by almost all music directors whenever qawwalis are to be recorded.
According to the story, Sunil Dutt and Waheeda Rehman belonging to arch-rival families of Rajasthan, meet stealthily in the mela, where this tent performance of this qawwaali is being performed.
One can see Sudhir playing the role of the lead qawwaal, lip syncing the song in Manna Dey’s voice. He has many assistants lip syncing in chorus. Knowledgeable readers can easily notice that the young kid seated near him is none other that Sanjay Dutt. In between, the performers change, as the lovers are imagining a different visual. Waheeda Rehman imagines that Sunil Dutt is singing the qawwaali, and Sunil Dutt imagines Waheeda Rehman dancing to the tune and words of the qawwaali.
With this song, the sixth and final song from the movie ‘Reshma Aur Shera’ (1971) joins the list of movies that have all their songs covered in the blog.
