“Khaandaan”(1942) was directed by Shaukat Hussain Rizvi for Pancholi Pictures, Lahore. The movie had Noorjahaan, Ghulam Mohammad, Manorama, ajmal, Durga Mota, Baby Akhtar, Ibrahim, Nafees, Pran, Krishn, Chami, G N Butt etc in it.
Seven songs from this movie have been discussed in the blog.
Here is the eighth song from “Khaandaan”(1942) to appear in the blog. This song is sung by Noorjahaan. Lyricist is not known. Music is composed by Ghulam Haider.
One comment in YT claims that this is the voice of Sgamshad Begam and not Noorjahaan. The voice and pronounciation of words sounds like Noorjahaan to me though.
Song-Mere baagh ka maali aa ha ha ha aa gaya (Khaandaan)(1942) Singer-Noorjahaan, MD-Ghulam Haider

Atul ji,
I get the ‘mixed’ sound of voices in the song under discussion. When I listen to ‘aa ha ha ha….’ I get a feel of Noor Jahan’s voice. When I listen to ‘jhoom rahi hai daali daali’, it sounds like the voice of Shamshad Begum.
I have watched the full movie available on YT. This song as well as the song ‘mere ammi ka raaj bhala’ discussed in the Blog a couple of days back are not available on the VCD/DVD of the film. Based on the story as well as the roles of Noor Jahan as Zeenat), Manorama as Nargis and Baby Akhtari (she was no more baby in the film) as Nagma, I have come to the conclusion that both the songs mentioned above may have been picturised on Baby Akhtari for the following reasons:
1. In the film, Zeenat has no mother but she is looked after by her aunt who has a daughter Nagma (Baby Akhtari). Hence, I guess, ‘meri ammi ka raaj bhala’ may have been picturised on Baby Akhtari which means that song was not sung by Noor Jahan.
2. There is a strong bond between the gardner (Maali, whom I am not able to recognise) employed by Nagma’s father (probably Ghulam Mohammed). Nagma helps him in the garden work. While working, she loses one of her ear rings. Nagma’s father thinks that the ear ring has been stolen by the gardener. He reprimands him and call for the police. Before police could come, Nagma finds her lost ear ring in the house. The gardener feels humiliated and leaves the house. Nagma insists and tells her father to call him back. But the gardener is adamant. It is only when Nagma requests him crying, the gardener relents and agrees to come back. I guess that the song ‘mere baagh ka maali phir aa gaya’ fits in this situation very well. In this case also, the song may have been picturised on Baby Akhtari which means that the song was not sung by Noor Jahan.

Atulji, I still think this is Shamshad’s voice. That is why I had dropped it while covering my series ‘Songs Of Noorjehan’. If you listen to ‘Tu kaun si badli’ and ‘Mere liye jahan mein’ immediately after this ‘bagh ka mali’, you will find the difference in voice and classically trained style etc.
