Wow and wow, what a song. Same story, same pattern – production house is obscure, film is obscure, actors not so well accepted as grade A material, music director not so well recognized as top of the line. And that is where we find some the most titillating gems of music. Under different circumstances, this song could have been top of charts. E.g. if this song was performed on screen by, say, Shammi Kapoor, well then it would have been treated as a hit, and would have found its place in the listings of timeless classics of Rafi Sb’s fun songs.
But alas, same story. Production banner is SB Films, Bombay. Music director is C Arjun. Ah yes, it is a Sheikh Mukhtar film, but the lead pair is Sujeet Kumar and Kum Kum. In all likelihood, on screen, it is Sujeet Kumar piling on epithets and superlative, one on top of the other, in his effort to serenade Kum Kum. Given the cast of actors, this seems to be the most likely scenario.
Rest of the cast includes familiar names like Jayant, Mehmood, Mukri, Helen, Neelam, Ramlal, Sheila, Mirza Musharraf, Latif etc. The lyrics are written by Qamar Jalaalabaadi. The film is directed by Harsukh Bhatt. And so, given all the demographics of this film, the distributors, the film critics and the audience decide to keep this film away from mainstream popularity, and this song away from gaining distinction.
The film makes its debut on our blog today. With a name like ‘Lamboo In Hongkong’, and a ‘Sheikh Mukhtaresque’ appeal, the film was already destined to be, well, obscure. But after listening to this song, now I am very keen to listen to the rest of the songs of this film.
It goes without saying that this is Rafi Sb at his best. The opening lines are rendered so wonderfully – no music, no rhythm, no percussion – just the voice of Rafi Sb. And if you are not aware, you will miss the fact that there is no music. That is the attractive beauty of his singing.
The manner in which he renders the punch line – “vagairah, vagairah, vagairah“, is completely ‘paisa vasool’. And even in the rest of the lines of the song, there is such an upbeat abandon and happiness that characterizes the tone of this song. So clearly, the singer is living the emotions that the words are trying to convey. Listen and enjoy this wonderful gem of a Rafi Sb song.

I have seen the movie but do not remember anything.
Lets also laud C(See?) Arjun too without whom the words would have sounded inane.
