Today’s song is from a film ‘Khoobsoorat’-52. It is sung by Asha Bhonsle. The lyricist was Shams Azeemabadi and the music was by Madan Mohan, who was assisted by V.Balsara, Sonny Castelinho and Bipin Dutt ( of the Bipin-Babul jodi later on). The film was directed by S.F.Hasnain. The film was made under the banner of Fazli Brothers, Bombay.

The cast of the film was Suraiya, Nasir Khan, Yakub, Noor, Husnbanu, Shakeela, Munshi Munakka, Bhudo Advani, Jankidas etc etc.

Nasir Khan was Dilip Kumar’s younger brother. The careers of both brothers started almost at the same time. However, Nasir’s debut film Mazdoor-45 and Dilip’s debut film Jwar Bhata-44 as well as the next film Pratima-45 flopped miserably. But Milan-46 by Bombay talkies, Jugnu-47 and Shaheed-48 took Dilip Kumar almost to the top of the chart. Nasir’s Shehnai-47 too became a Hit at the same time.

Similarly, Nageena-51 of Nasir and Deedar-51 of Dilip released almost at the same time became hits. Their producers were different, roles were different, and even Heroines were different. While Dilip Kumar never worked with Nasir’s heroines like Nutan, Suraiya, Begum Para, Geeta Bali and Rehana, Nasir did work with some of Dilip’s heroines lie Meena Kumari, Madhubala, Nargis and Nimmi.

Although Nasir Khan created his own separate image for some time, he is now known more as Dlip Kumar’s brother rather than for being a successful actor himself.

Nasir Khan ( born in 1924) will always be remembered as the leading man of Pakistan’s maiden production Teri Yaad (1948). Nasir Khan started his career in 1945 with Filmistan’s Mazdoor(1945). His next film Shehnai (1947) opposite Rehana was a hit and it is still remembered for C. Ramchandra’s songs especially Maar katari mar jaana (sung by Amirbai Karnataki) and Aana meri jaan meri jaan Sunday kai Sunday (sung by C. Ramchandra, Shamshad Begum and Meena Kapoor).

He shifted to Lahore at the time of partition and appeared in two Pakistani films i.e. Teri Yaad (1948) and Shahida (1949). Teri Yaad with Asha Posley was Pakistan’s first released film. It flopped because it was lacking in production quality and that along with Jinnah’s death soon after contributed to its failure.

Deewan Sardari Lal’s Shahida, Nasir Khan’s second Pakistani film in which he starred with Shamim, best remembered for her role in Kishore Sahu’s family drama Sindoor also failed to click. Disheartened, Nasir found it hard to support himself and sought help from his brother Yusuf Khan, alias Dilip Kumar, the emerging matinee idol of Indian cinema. Under the banner of Best Pictures, Nasir Khan distributed four films from Bombay – India to Pakistan, including Mela, a Nargis-Dilip blockbuster by film maker S.U. Sunny, featuring some of Naushad’s most enchanting musical compositions.

Overwhelmed by his sudden wealth Nasir then became involved in a clandestine love affair with a girl belonging to a feudal Punjabi family. As a result of this imbroglio he had to leave the country overnight,to save his own life, that too stealthily- only with whatever clothes he had on his body. He returned to Bombay, but not before having his name recorded in the history of Pakistani cinema as the hero of its maiden film.

After returning to India, Nasir resumed his career in 1951 and appeared in 6 Hindi films including Khazana, Nagina, Nakhare, Nazneen, Phoolon Ke Haar and Saudagar. Of these special mention must be made of Nagina, a mystery-thriller where he appeared opposite Nutan. Nagina was issued an Adults only certificate and is still remembered for its haunting melodies sung by C.H. Atma and Lata Mangeshkar.

Later, Nasir Khan appeared with many top Indian heroines including Suraiya (Lal Kunwar), Nargis (Angarey), Meena Kumari (Daera) and made somewhat successful team with Nutan (Nagina, Aagosh and Shisham), but he never achieved the success his brother Dilip Kumar did because of his limited acting abilities and wooden expressions.

He married the sensual Indian beauty and his co-star in 3 films i.e. Begum Para. Nasir Khan’s most memorable film was perhaps the hugely successful Ganga Jamuna (1961) where he was cast opposite his own brother Dilip Kumar. The film was a story of two bothers on opposite sides of the law, Ganga (Dilip Kumar) and Jamuna (Nasir Khan).

When films stopped coming to him, he shifted to Deolali, near Nashik and started farming and poultry also, but failed miserably.

According to his wife Begum Para, Nasir developed this physical condition, where he began to lose all his hair and eyebrows prematurely. He really lost out on his career because of that. During the making of Ganga Jamuna, he wore a wig and got away with it. So he concentrated all his efforts on making films.

He died on 3rd May, 1974. His last film Bairaag (1976) was released after his death.

Film Khubsurat-52 was produced by Fazli brothers and it directed by one of its brothers- S.F.Hasnain, that is, Sued Fazl-i-Hasnain Fazli ( 12-1-1912 born at Allahabad-U.P. to 9-7-1956, died at Karachi, Pakistan). His other brother Sibtain Fazli, who had earlier directed films like Chaurangi-42, Ismat-44, Shama-46 and Mehendi-47 migrated to Pakistan after Partition. SF.Hasnain started his career by directing film Triya Charitra-35. He was barely 23 year old at that time. He got this chance as it was a home production by Deen Films then. He further directed Sajeev Murty-35, Qaidi-40, Masoom-41, Fashion-43 and Dil-46. After Partition, he stayed in India and produced and directed Duniya-49 and Khubsurat-52. Then he migrated to Pakistan, where he died on 9th July 1956 at Karachi.

If you read names in the cast of film Khubsurat-52, you will find a name Noor. Have you any idea who this actress is ? Yes, she was to become the wife of comedian Johnny Walker later on. Born on 21-7-1940, she was the second of 3 sisters. The eldest was Shakila, then Noor and lastly Nasreen.

All 3 sisters joined films, but Shakila was the most famous and had a longer career span than the sisters.

Noor debuted as the child star singing the famous song,” Udan khatole pe ud jaun” in film Anmol Ghadi-46. Along with her the other child artist debutant was M.Kabir ( later father of actress Sonam). Then came Dard-47. In both these films, she was credited as Noor Mahal, but after this in all subsequent films, she was billed as Noor only. Noor acted in 16 films. They were Anmol Ghadi-46, Dard-47, khubsurat-52, Baghi-53, Do bigha zameen-53, Laila-54, Noor Mahal-54, khushboo-54, Aarpaar-54, Naukari-54, Mast Qalandar-55, Shahi chor-55, Sakhi hatim-55, Lutera-55, Heer-56 and Chand ki duniya-59. The last two films got delayed releases.

During the film Aarpaar-54, she enacted in a very popular song,”are na na na Tauba Tauba, main naa pyar karungi”, along with comedian Johnny Walker. Johnny fell in love with her and they got married in 1955. After marriage she stopped accepting films assignments.

The couple had 3 daughters and 3 sons. All 3 sons studied in USA, all 3 daughters were married off before Johnny’s retirement from films. She stays in her bungalow, ” Noor Villa ” in Andheri, Mumbai.

Film Khubsurat had 8 songs composed by Madan Mohan. The singing actress Suraiya had 4 songs in it. 2 songs each were by Talat and Asha Bhosle. No Lata song here.

This was the only film in which Madan Mohan and Suraiya came together. Ghazal was the base of Madan’s music. Suraiya sang 3 Ghazals in this film, which had average popularity. Lata and Madan Mohan ghazals would enjoy for more popularity than Suraiya’s ghazals in Khubsurat-52.

Both C.Ramchandra and Madan Mohan were so much enamoured by Lata’s voice- to the extent of Devotion, I would say- that they both could not capitalise on the voice of Suraiya in their films. C.Ramchandra gave music to 2 Suraiya films. one was ‘Samrat Chandragupta’-45 and the other was ‘Duniya’-49. In 1945, both Suraiya and C.Ramchandra were new comparatively, but by 1949, both had grown up to special positions in HFM. Suraiya was an acclaimed singer and C.Ramchandra was a successful composer. Still, C.Ramchandra and Suraiya could not weave any magic in their songs in the film Duniya-49.

As a composer C.Ramchandra only had professional relations with Suraiya, but Madan and Suraiya were childhood friends. They, together with Raj Kapoor, used to participate and sing in the Children’s programmes on Bombay A.I.R. frequently. Ghazal was her favourite, so was Madan’s. Inspite of all this, Madan Mohan could not do justice to her voice and songs in his film. For a long tie Madan Mohan harboured a dream of bringing out a private record of Suraiya’s Ghazals under his music direction, but the dream was never fulfilled ! The 2 Ghazals Talat Mehmood sang in this film were more popular and sold more records than the Suraiya songs of film khubsurat-52.

7 songs out of the total 8 songs are already on the Blog. This is the last and the 8th song, making Khubsurat-52 the latest YIPPEED movie in the blog.

Lyrics

kisi se naina lade
aji haan khade khade
kisi se naina lade
aji haan khade khade
oy kisi se naina lade
aji haan khade khade

unse lade jo more nayanwa
ghaayal hua mora bhola sa manwa
unse lade jo more nayanwa
ghaayal hua mora bhola sa manwa
teer do dil mein gade
aji haan khade khade
teer do dil mein gade
aji haan khade khade
oy kisi se naina lade
aji haan khade khade
kisi se naina lade
aji haan khade khade

unke nayanwa aise lutere
loot le chaahe jise shaam sawere
unke nayanwa aise lutere
loot le chaahe jise shaam sawere
lut gaye bade bade
aji haan khade khade
lut gaye bade bade
aji haan khade khade
oy kisi se naina lade
aji haan khade khade
kisi se naina lade
aji haan khade khade

kaafi hai hamko ek nazar bhi
ek nazar zara dekho idhar bhi
kaafi hai hamko ek nazar bhi
ek nazar zara dekho idhar bhi
thhak ke koi gir na pade
aji haan khade khade
thhak ke koi gir na pade
aji haan khade khade
oy kisi se naina lade
aji haan khade khade
kisi se naina lade
aji haan khade khade

Sir, thanks for this detailed informative post. Knowing about Nasir Khan and his acting career was interesting and same for other stars/directors of that era and particularly how many of them have been shifting due to partition and later on settled on either sides. For me, its like reading the history of Indian Cinema.
Thanks !!
Congratulations on covering all songs of “Khoobsoorat-1952” and its joining to the “list of movies-all songs covered” 🙂
