Ye husn mera ye ishq tera

There is one genre of songs that always has me hooked to it. And that is the qawwali.

I don’t know what exactly it is about the qawwali that has me so – I don’t think it is just one thing. Not just the music, or the lyrics, or the synchronized “clapping”, or the setting – I think it is all of these. The entire package, that fascinates me.

To this day, there’s not one qawwali I have come across that I have not liked. It doesn’t matter who the singers or the actors are. Even when Kishore Kumar, not somebody you’d associate in particular with a qawwali, sings “haal kya hai dilon ka”, he has me bowled over. Yes, I’m a total sucker for qawwalis. 🙂

There are of course many very well-known qawwalis in Hindi films. From the first all-woman qawwali “aahen na bhare” (Zeenat – 1945) through to others like “hamen to loot liya” (Al Hilaal – 1958), “teri mehfil mein” and “jab raat hai’ (Mughal-e-Azam – 1960), “sharma ke ye kyon sab parda nasheen” (Chaudhvin Ka Chand – 1961), “hum deewane tere dar se” (Naqli Nawab – 1962), “chandi sa badan” (Taj Mahal – 1963), “chali chali kaisi hawa” (Bluffmaster – 1963), “tumhe husn deke khuda ne” (Jab Se Tumhe Dekha Hai – 1963), “nigaahen milaane ko” (Dil Hi To Hai – 1963), “poochho na hamen ishq mein” (Samson – 1964), “aye meri zohra jabeen” (Waqt – 1965), “aise besharm aashiq”(Putlibai – 1972), “ye maana meri jaan” (Hanste Zakhm – 1973), “raaz ki baat” (Dharma-1973), “yaari hai imaan mera” (Zanjeer – 1973), “parda hai parda” (Amar Akbar Anthony – 1977), “hum kisi se kam nahin” (Hum Kisi Se Kam Nahin – 1977) to “zamane ko dikhana hai” (Zamane Ko Dikhana Hai – 1981), and many more in between.

And of course, the qawwalis of Barsaat Ki Raat (1960). An embarrassment of riches, with the mother of all qawwalis, “na to caravan ki talaash hai”, leading superbly into “ye ishq ishq hai ishq ishq”. The other qawwalis of this film – “nigaah-e-naaz” and “jee chaahta hai” – were also brilliant, even if they got overshadowed by the other masterpieces of the film.

By the start of the 80s, the Hindi film industry was changing. Disco music had become very common. Qawwalis, on the totally opposite side of the spectrum, began fading away. Earlier, even as a filler, there would be a qawwali thrown in. For example, the hero running away from the police would suddenly land up in a qawwali – and disguise himself as the main qawaal. 🙂 By the time, the 80s came along, this filler song would often be a disco number. Nowadays, this is an “item number”. Times have changed.

I don’t mind new elements coming in, but it is rather unfortunate that the qawwali has practically gone out of Hindi films. Unless of course, it is a period film, or something like that. But that’s how things go – as cultures evolve, some elements are replaced by others. Qawwali, as a form, is probably still strong in some quarters – it is just that it’s not included much as a mainstream element in Hindi films anymore.

But back to the days when it was popular. After the success of Barsaat Ki Raat (1960), it’s not surprising that qawwalis were very much in vogue. In the list above, there are many qawwalis of the early 60s – and these are ones that I just came up with off the top of my head. I’m sure there are many more which I have missed out. Heck, there was even a film “Qawwali ki Raat” in 1964!

All of this is naturally leading to the song of today.

And yes, it is a qawwali. Written by Sahir.

Now, when we talk about qawwalis, very often the lyrics are a highlight. They usually have depth and are craftily constructed, whether the qawwali is a teasing one (as often in a competition), or any other theme. And usually the Urdu adds to the charm of a qawwali.

When one is looking for depth and Urdu, one usually needs to look no further than Sahir. Barsaat Ki Raat, Dil Hi To Hai and Taj Mahal are examples of this. “Chandi sa badan”, to name just one.

The film “Bahurani” (1963) also had a lovely qawwali written by Sahir. I don’t exactly remember the context of this qawwali but I remember seeing this film a few years ago. It is the story of how a woman (played by Mala Sinha), married to a man who is mentally retarded (played by Guru Dutt), deals with the situation against all the odds, and helps her husband take on his wastrel brother (played by Feroz Khan).

It is possible that this qawwali scene is to depict the aiyaashi of Feroz Khan. It is picturised on Shyama and is just lovely to listen to.

The lyrics of this song were sent to me by Avinashji recently, requesting me to do a write-up for this song.

The music is by C. Ramchandra. I must admit I am not familiar with many songs by Sahir for C.Ramchandra. Nor am I familiar with many qawwalis composed by C. Ramchandra. That makes this even more special for me.

The voice is Asha Bhosle’s.

I am sure you will also enjoy this qawwali. It is lovely and deserves to be better-known.

And with this song, “Bahuraani”(1963) joins the list of movies that have all their songs covered in the blog. 🙂

Sorry Prakash ji, initially I had sent this song to Atul ji on 27.10.2013. I think, I had shared you my excel sheet before sending this contribution then, so this must not have been included in that sheet then.
Thanks for the details of this movie and other information please.

Thank you Raja ji for this post and I enjoyed it a lot. I too like Qawwalis very much and in fact like all those that you have listed in the above write up. Still there are many from the seventies, which will be coming there on the blog 🙂 may be, in the film they are used as ‘fillers’ and in the movie they came as a result of the ‘situation’ that you have mentioned above, but then they are there for our listening pleasure and enjoyment still 🙂
Thanks again !!!

Congratulations Atul ji – Raja ji on covering all songs of ‘Bahuraani-1963’ and its joining to the ‘list of movies – all songs covered’ 🙂
