“Shama” is a movie title that leads to a serious bout of “same name confusion” among movie and music lovers. Not just casual followers of HFM but even “experts” make grave errors in mistaking one “Shama”with another, and worse, mistaking one music director with another-who also had similar names.
As it is, “Shama”(1946) had music by Ghulam Haider while “Shama”(1961) had music by Ghulam Mohammad. I have noticed “experts” telling us that Ghulam Haider of “Shama”(1946) later composed the music of “Paakeezah” (1971). !
To make matters even more confusing, Suraiyya who figures in “Shama”(1961) was also originally signed up for “Shama”(1946), but she was dropped for some unknown reasons and was replaced by Mehtab. Her songs recorded for “Shama”(1946) were re recorded in other voice, and her songs ended up being regarded as “version” songs of “Shama”(1946). Suraiyya has of course sung in “Shama”(1961).
Regulars of this blog are hopefully quite clear about the two movies of the same name and also about the difference between the music directors of the two movies. Ghulam Haider is the music director who first introduced Punjabi folk music in Hindi movies, which was subsequently followed by Naushad with his UP folk tunes and that revolutionised HFM.
“Shama”(1946) had ten songs in it. Seven songs from the movie have been discussed in the past. Here is the eigth song from “Shama”(1946) to appear in the blog. This song is sung by Shamshad Begam. Shams Lucknowi is the lyricist. Music is composed by Ghulam Haider.
The song is picturised on Mehtab who played a trypical self sacrificing lady in this movie.
