Hullo to all Atulites
So let us have a song today(11 november 2016) to wish the Bengali/ Nepali beauty Mala Sinha on her 80th birthday. I don’t remember when was it that I became aware of this sweet smiled, doe eyed and talented actress. Must be when I saw a song where she was running around singing “Neeli aankh milalo ji, dil mein aaj chuppa lo jee” or singing “yaa allah yaa allah dil le gaya”. But I must have also seen her sing “chupke se dil dai de de nahin te shor mach jayega” alongwith our own Rajesh Khanna. She looked very cute and naughty in all these songs. Who can forget her say “hum moond ke palkon ko iss dil ko sazaa de toh”; or her “bade naa samajh ho yeh kya chahate ho”; looks like I can go on and on and on with my list of favourite Mala Sinha songs (didn’t know I knew so many!) But then she slowly graduated to roles of playing slightly senior characters not like Nirupa Roy or Indrani Mukherjee’s mother act but more like Asha Parekh or Waheeda Rehman’s wife of the senior hero who gets a song or two as in some of her 80s and 90s movies.
She has had opportunity to work with the best actors of the starting with Pradeep Kumar in “Badshah“ her first hindi movie. Prior to that she had done a few Bengali movies. We have seen her with Raj Kapoor/ Kumar, Shammi Kapoor, Sunil Dutt, Manoj Kumar, no I won’t lengthen the post by naming every hero in the industry here.
She was born in Calcutta to Nepali parents and married a business man from Nepal in 1968. She has a daughter Pratibha who also tried her luck in Bollywood.
Today I thought of a song which I have seen a few times on TV. It is from one of Mala Sinha’s later movies –Bereham (1980)- where she was paired opposite Sanjeev Kumar (they were a successful pair in the mid-70s). she plays a Tawaif who is into the profession because she could not wait for her lover to return. He in turn is upset with her as he feels she has ditched him; without knowing the reasons for her action. (I also don’t remember as I have seen it ages back on Doordarshan, should see it again if I get a chance ?) so now he is a senior IPS officer and she is performing at some event where he is the guest-of-honour. (typically Hindi Film style) We also have Shatrughan Sinha and Reena Roy in the cast with Kader Khan adding confusion in every one’s lives. The song is written by Verma Malik and Laxmikant- Pyarelal are the composers with Lata Mangeshkar as playback.
Happy Birthday to Mala Sinha.

Song-Haseenon ki duniya khudgarz hai (Beraham)(1980) Singer-Lata, Lyrics-Verma Malik, MD-Laxmikant Pyarelal
Lyrics
kehne ko hum
jawaaniyon ke khwaab hain
naazon ada mein khelte
shabaab hain
rang hai bahaar hai
gulaab hai
jawaab nahin koi
laajawaab hai
lekin
mmm
haseeno ki duniya
khudgarz hai ae ae ae
haseenon ki duniya
khudgarz hai ae ae ae
ittila dena mera farz hai
aadaab arz hai
aadaab arz hai
aadaab arz hai
haseenon ki duniya
khudgarz hai ae ae ae
ittila dena mera farz hai
aadaab arz hai
aadaab arz hai
aadaab arz hai
jo ik baar dil inse takraayega
aaaa aaa
woh inko na barson bhula paayega
inhen pyar karna bada hai gunaah aa
inhen pyaar karna bada hai gunaah aa
khuda hi bachaaye
khuda ki panaah aa aa
khuda hi bachaaye khuda ki panaah
bada karz hai
ye bada karz hai ae ae
ittila dena mera farz hai ae
aadaab arz hai
aadaab arz hai
aadaab arz hai
ye nazren hain khanzar
ye kaatil ada aa aa
lut jaaoge
inse bachna zara
bachna zara
bachna zara
hai fitrat mein hi inke
likha sitam m
reham dil ke parde mein hai bereham
kisi se na inko
koi garz hai ae ae
ittila dena mera farz hai ae
aadaab arz hai
aadaab arz hai
aadaab arz hai
aadaab arz hai
aadaab arz hai

Mala Sinha indeed had a lot of good songs. I remember her acting in a number of movies opposite Biswajeet too – they were a popular pair. And Dharam too. And probably opposite Joy Mukherjee too. She was well known for her histrionics – though sometimes she could be over-the-top. 🙂
