“Ramayani”(1945) was directed by Sarvottam Badami for Poornima Pictures, Bombay. This obscure movie had Nargis, Pahadi Sanyal, Rose, Chandramohan, Ameerbai karnataki, Kanhaiyalal , Moni Chatterji etc in it.
Very little is known about this movie which is described as a social movie by HFGK. Some wise guy on wikipedia has described it as a mythological movie based on Ramayan. Wikipedia describing it as a mythological movie just because the word “Ramayan” figures in the title is like saying that “Rampur Ka Laxman”(1972), “Ram Balram”(1980), “Ram Teri ganga maili”(1985) etc are mythological movies just because the word Ram appears in them. 🙂 Wikipedia has taken this incorrect view from an erudite scholarly book called “Indian Literature and Popular Cinema: Recasting Classics” edited by Heidi R.M. Pauwels. This book contains some other glaring errors as well.
The movie, clearly a “social” movie had nine songs in it. Here is the first song from “Ramayani”(1945) to appear in the blog. This song quite a gentleman like “chhed chhaad” song, 1940s style. It is sung by Pahadi Sanyal and Rajkumari, who are mostly known for singing serious songs rather than such a light romantic song. This song sounds like a hidden gem to me.
Bekal is the lyricist. Music is composed by S N Tripathi.
Only the audio of the song is available. My guess is that this song was picturised on Pahadi Sanyal (singing for himself) and Nargis, though I could be wrong about the lady lipsyncer. I request our knowledgeable readers to throw light on the movie as well as on the picturisation of this song.
With this song, “Ramayani”(1945) makes its debut in the blog.
