07/10/2020 – 79th Birthday of Usha Khanna
———————————————————————–
We are celebrating the 79th birthday of Usha Khanna, the only female music director, shall we say with a sizable films and number of songs to her credit. Ameerbai Karnataki is the other female composer I can think of. This field as some technical fields in the film industry has been dominated by males. The reasons for this could be socio-political. As the musicians were mostly men, so it is understandable. Like I said the technical side is dominated by males in this industry. There are very few female director’s also. No cinematographers that I have heard of, recently if someone has entered the fray I don’t know.
Usha Khanna’s career statistics are impressive, better than even major well known music composers. Imdb is listing 141 films from 1959 to 2016, that is five and half decades.
In my Vinod Khanna post yesterday, I said that the film “Muqaddar ka Sikandar” is missing in the filmography at imdb. I didn’t look close enough, it appears. Peevesie’s Mom informed me that it is very much there in the list but as “Conqueror of destiny”. Imdb is giving the names of hindi film in English translation. The two of us had fun translating some of the names of Vinod Khanna’s films, which imdb had left as it is.
As Usha Khanna’s filmography is untouched by this translation bug, I am trying my hand at it :
| 1. | Dil deke dekho : Give your heart then see for yourself. (That’s full sentence) |
| 2. | Hum Hindustani : We Indians (That was easy) |
| 3. | Awara Baadal : Wayward cloud |
| 4. | Shabnam : Dew |
| 5. | Aao pyar Karen : Let’s fall in Love |
| 6. | Nishan : sign |
| 7. | Faisla : Decision |
| 8. | Ek Sapera Ek Lutera : A snake charmer and a robber |
| 9. | Main wohi hoon : Yes, that’s me. |
| 10. | Lal Bangla : Red Bungalow |
| 11. | Insaaf : Justice |
| 12. | Raat Andheri thhi : It was a dark night. |
| 13. | Chaand par chadhayee : Let’s move to the moon. |
| 14. | Woh koyi aur hogaa : That maybe someone else. |
| 15. | Aag : Fire |
| 16. | Pehle paisa phir bhagwan: Show me the money, then God |
| 17. | Khoj : Search |
| 18. | Behroopiya : The interloper |
| 19. | Ek Paheli : A riddle. |
| 20. | Nateeja : The result |
| 21. | Sau saal beet gaye : 100 years later |
| 22. | Bandish : The restriction |
| 23. | Ilzaam : Accusation |
| 24. | Ek phool ek bhool : A flower and a mistake. |
| 25. | Begunaah : Not guilty |
| 26. | Deedar : The view |
So on and so forth, this is enough I think.
About the movie Alibaba and 40 thieves(1966) I have written some things in this post of a song from Alibaba chaalis chor (1954).
The stats page of the blog shows that she has composed 973 songs, and only 223 are posted so far. That is less than 25% of the total song composed by the one of the most prolific music directors of the golden era of hindi film music and later. My own tally is 4 posts of Usha Khanna’s songs, posted by me so far, including the present post. The blog also has 37 songs sung by Usha Khanna.
The present song is from the film Alibaba and forty thieves (1966). The composer is Usha Khanna. There are two lyricist credited with writing this song, namely Prem Dhawan and Javed Anwar. Javed Anwar is the pen name used by her father Manoharlal Khanna, for writing ghazals and film songs for her.
Three songs from the film are posted in the blog :
| Song | Date posted |
|---|---|
| Mere khayaalon ka tu hi khuda (Alibaba and forty thieves) | 23 October 2011 |
| Ham tere charaagh hain jalaaye jaa bujhaaye jaa (Alibaba and forty thieves) | 29 January 2015 |
| Dekhiye zara pyaar se kyun khafa ho dildaar se (Alibaba and forty thieves) | 14 January 2020 |
The singers are Mukesh and Suman Kalyanpur, singing for Sanjeev Kumar and L. Vijayalaxmi. The song is a sweet romantic song picturised in colourful sets. Actually I saw a few songs of this movie today. I am trying to find an old song where, the slaves are being sold in the market and one female is singing a song, calling out for rescue. I vaguely remember such a song having seen in “Chhayageet” on TV. Since the TV used to be black n white, the colour songs are also remembered in black n while. I did not find the song I am looking for. It could be anywhere as I know only the situation. It’s like trying to find a needle in a hay stack.

Lyrics
Aajaa
baahon mein
dil ki
raahon mein
jhukti nazren
Allah Allah
uthhti palkein
Allah Allah
armaan
jagaaona
toofaan
utthaaona
rukti saansen
Allah Allah
behki baantein
Allah Allah
ye phoolon ke daaman pe
shabnam ke moti
ke jaise zameen par
utar aaye taare
ye phoolon ke daaman pe
shabnam ke moti
ke jaise zameen par
utar aaye taare
zara meri jaanib
bhi dekho meri jaan
meraa pyaar reh reh ke
tumko pukaare
Aajaa
baahon mein
dil ki
raahon mein
hhukti nazren
Allah Allah
uthhti palkein
Allah Allah
hai balkhaa ke girti
hui aabshaaren
ke tum ne hai
lehraa ke gesu bakhere
hai balkhaa ke girti
hui aabshaaren
ke tum ne hai
lehraa ke gesu bakhere
na dekh is tarah tu
mere paas aake
ke aati hai ab
?? tere
armaan
jagaao na
toofaan
utthaao na
rukti saansein
Allah Allah
behki baatein
Allah Allah
ye kashti hai ya
chaand ki paalki hai
chali jaa rahi hai
udi jaa rahi hai
ye kashti hai ya
chaand ki paalki hai
chali jaa rahi hai
udi jaa rahi hai
meri jaan muhabbat
ke hain ye karishme
mubobbat bhi sab rang
dikhlaa rahi hai
aajaa
baahon mein
dil ki
raahon mein
jhhukti nazren
Allah Allah
uthhti palkein
Allah Allah
armaan
jagaao na
toofaan
utthaao na
rukti saansein
Allah Allah
behki baatein
Allah Allah

You have given lot of links. But these are not type of song. It’s simple singing song, no dancing. A small group of slaves, poor looking, and a female is singing,
It must already be in the blog, as it is a nice song. I will recognise it immediately.
Thanx for trying.

Are you by any chance referring to a song in film ANARKALI – 1953. The song ” Aaja ab to aaja mere kismet ke karidaar “, is sung in such a situation, where a slave is being sold.
