Qismat phati hui thhi taanke laga rahe hain

Posted on: October 3, 2013

This article is written by nahm, a fellow enthusiast of Hindi movie music and a regular contributor to this blog.

It is the turn of “Q” now. I had decided on this song sometime ago. And having looked for other options too, came back to this song.

The singer here singing a Rafi solo, is an unknown actor. He is a tailor by profession and has been offered 1000 dinars to stitch up a dead body. How morbid, I thought. Hence I was looking for a different occasion, location , occupation kind of song. But it turns out that this is the “Q ‘ song for the time being. The poor fellow has an unpleasant task in front of him and an obscene amount of money for this work which will take care of his poverty for a while.

I have seen F. C. Mehra’s ‘Ali Baba and 40 thieves” starring Dharmendra and Hema Malini as Ali baba and Marjina, when it was released. I was racking my memory if there was a situation where sewing a body is required. I could recall only the scene where the thieves are hiding in the huge Jars, and Marjina with accomplices, pours boiling oil in those jars. Somethings are stuck in the memory, like this song :

‘Jaadugar jaadoo kar jaayegaa,
kisi ko samajh nahin aayega
O Marjina naach haseena mushkil karde sab ka jeena
nahin to
nahin to …..”

Another scene I remember is the marking of doors in the night. I will have to see one or the other version to find out what it is all about.

Eventually I asked my husband, if he know of such a situation in ‘Alibaba aur chalis chor’. He immediately told me that he has seen the film where Sanjeev Kumar is Ali Baba, and when he finds the body of his brother outside the ‘gaar’ where the treasure in hidden, he asks
‘Mustafa’ to stitch up the body so that there is no talk in the town about the beheaded body of his brother. This is “Alibaba and 40 thieves “(1966), with Usha Khanna’s music. I have now seen a same situation song in the 1966 version, where ‘Mustafa’ played by David is blindfolded and is being taken to Alibaba’s house, while a begger is singing a Rafi solo in the street.

One song from the 1966 film and three of 1954 version are posted in the blog, while the 1980 version is yet to make its debut here.

Here is the brief story at imbd site of the film of 1954.

” When Sher Khan uses his whip to capture Marjina, Alibaba comes to her rescue and takes her as well as her assistant, Abu, to his house where he lives with his sister, Salma, and a maid, Sitara. When Marjina indicates she loves him, he rejects her as he hates women. Subsequently, Marjina learns that his hatred is due to accusations leveled at him by his very own brother, Qasim Khan, for attempting to molest the latter’s wife, Fatima. While tracking his donkey down, Alibaba comes across some thieves, who use a secret code to open a cavern containing looted treasures and jewelry. He loads two sacks on his donkey, takes it home, gives some away, and uses the rest to improves their lifestyle. Qasim hears of this,
and on the pretext of patching-up, finds out about the cavern, heads out there, is able to gain entry, but after taking considerable wealth, forgets the code and is trapped. The thieves, led by Abu Hassan, find him hiding, behead him, and depart. Alibaba finds his corpse, has a tailor sue his body together and cremates him. The emperor appoints him as the Emir, and he hopes to marry Marjina soon – little realizing that an enraged Abu Hassan has located his whereabouts and, using treachery and deception, is all set to kill him. ”

The music director is S N Tripathi and Raja Mehdi Ali Khan is the lyricist. The ironical tone of the song and the tailor’s expressions in the video are worth watching, even if the video in not in synch with the sound. There is an audio link also, which sounds divine.

There is a Tamil version with words: “Ullasa Ulagam Unakke Sondam Seyyada Seyyada Seyyada Nee Jalsa Seyyada Seyyada Seyyada.” Perhaps the Tamil version of the film.
