Hullo Atuldom
9th June….. is the birthday of a beloved Atulite. As far as possible I try and write a post for the day & try to wish him in the post. I have been a little slack in my posts over the last few months, but missing 9th June….. no way, not possible.
I think that “Sau Saal Tum Jio Jaan Meri” (film ‘Heera Moti’ of 1979) was the first post that I wrote for 9th June, 2013. That was a simple, short post. Then I had a chance to meet this Atulite in February 2014. Also, over the years I discovered that he was a fan of the music director C Ramachandra and has a lot of knowledge about him which he shared with us through his posts. So, for my next post for his birthday (inn 2016) I posted this song by C Ramchandra “Zara Ruk Ruk Ke Zara Thham Thham Ke“. But whatever the song accompanying my posts this Atulite appreciates the efforts and that is a big thing for me. My posts may not be as highly informative as his, but his appreciation means a lot to me. (I must actually thank Atulji for posting my musings, my feelings which helps me wish my friends of Atuldom.)
Reiterating what I wrote in my post last year (I am sorry if I am repeating everything that I have said last year & the year before last, but my feelings and thoughts remain the same):-
June 9th is the birthday of our IN-HOUSE ENCYCLOPEDIA who goes by the name Shri Arunkumar Deshmukh. I wish him a very Happy Birthday with this post. He is a person who is my inspiration in the sense that he learnt so many skills after retirement proving that there is no age-limit to learn anything new. He has no prejudices as regards the age of the music he listens to – meaning he is of the opinion there are good and bad songs/ music in all ages and times. He may not go out of his way seeking songs of new movies but appreciates good work when he sees it. He is generous in sharing his knowledge. He is among the few persons who I am comfortable in chatting with and can pick up the phone & start talking as if there is no gap in communication. The mornings of the WhatsApp group associated with the blog begin with his “GOOD MORNING” messages and we treasure the beautiful thoughts that come with it. In fact, Atulites get worried if the messages don’t appear & on his part, he informs us if he is going to be unavailable. (Must say Atuldom is one big family)
We, in Atuldom, have given him a tag “IN-HOUSE ENCYCLOPEDIA” but I prefer addressing him as Guru ji or Arun ji. All his posts are so well-researched that I am sure it is a big, time consuming activity for him considering that he also has his responsibilities of being a doting father and proud grandfather. May God give you all the energy needed to keep the posts coming in at a steady pace and awaiting your 1100th post soon.
In my post last year, I had spoken about Guru ji’s upcoming post number 1100. As of today, the number of posts by him, on the blog, stands at 1203 & each one of them being a treasure house. In the meantime, he has also compiled all the knowledge he has to share in two books. Hats off to you!!!!
The first 5 months of 2023 has been full of travel for me, with almost a trip-a-month to Mayanagari Mumbai. On one of those trips, I had visited Guru ji but only for about an hour. I more than made up for it last week when we had a ‘Gangout’ with Guru ji playing the willing host. How things fell in place, is written by Atul ji in this First Information Report (FIR) with the song “Motor Haule Haule Haank Dalaiver”.
This FIR was followed by Arun ji’s eye witness account of the day in the post “Is Ram Bharat Ke Desh Mein Jhagde Na Bhai Bhai“.
As Atul ji, has mentioned in his post, the ball was set rolling by Sudhir ji, around the first week of May. Then he also messaged me & asked why I had not responded to the email. As things stood on the day when the mails, WA messages etc were going back-n-forth, I had thought it would not be possible for me to make the trip to Mumbai for this ‘gangout’. I was to attend a wedding in Chennai. I mentioned all this to our Satulite – Peevesie’s Dad; without forgetting to mention that Atul ji will also be coming for the meet. He was the one who showed me the way, of how to make the trip possible. Instantly, I made the reservations and messaged Avinash ji about my travel plans; making him promise that this will be our secret. I think he kept the secret to the best of his abilities.
A day or two before the ‘gangout’, Arun ji called me to ask my ideas about the menu. He also asked me why I was not coming. I gave him my reasons, but informed him that Peevesie will be attending with her husband. I even contacted Shenoy ji to ask about his travel plans but didn’t divulge mine. So my plans were made. Only thing left was what would be my contribution to the day; brainstorming with Peevesie helped me settle for Aamras. Was I glad as it was well received.
I was very happy with the manner in which Arun ji welcomed me – “Simon Go back. Go Back Simon” is what he said (that is the level of comfort among members of Atuldom). Then I took it on myself to be the Dwaarpaal for the rest of the gang. I loved the look on everyone’s face as they entered. Such warmth. By 12 noon every gang member except Atul ji had arrived. (Atul ji has given the reasons for his late arrival in his FIR).
I have met the Mumbai based Atulites before, & I met Sudhir ji for the first time in 2014 when I had gone to New Delhi for some admission formalities of Peevesie. I had met Sudhir ji again in 2019 when he had visited Mumbai with Bakshish ji for a similar week of music related activity. Shenoy ji I have met a few times & Avinash ji I had met once before in Bangalore when he had visited in 2016. In this ‘gangout’ I finally got to meet Atul ji.
I shall stop my report on the Gangout here, as Arun ji has given a good account of it in his post.
Let us get on to a song from ‘Nehle Pe Dehla’ (1976). RD Burman was the music director & Anand Bakshi wrote 4 of the songs while Farooq Qaisar wrote the qawwali which was sung by Aziz Nazaan. The playback singers in this film are Lata Mangeshkar, Kishore kumar, Asha Bhosle, Manna Dey & Aziz Nazzan. Sunil Dutt, Vinod Khanna, Saira Banu, Bindu, Kamini Kaushal, Premnath, Om Prakash, Bharat Bhushan, Anwar hussain, Trilok Kapoor etc form the cast of this movie which was produced by Sunil Dutt and directed by Raj Khosla. The following are the three songs from the movie that are already showcased on the blog:
“Sun Le Tu Binti Meri Haji Ali Haji Ali”
In post on this third song, Avinashji gives us the story of the film. Reading the synopsis that he has given makes me feel that it may have been the typical masaala movie “where a family get separated in the first scene, brothers are on opposite sides of the law and come together in the climax to avenge all that the family has gone through over the years”.
With this post I would also like to recall the filmmaker Raj Khosla (3 May 1922- 9 June 1991) who gave us movies like ‘CID’ (1956), ‘Solva Saal’ (1958), ‘Bambai Ka Babu’ (1960), ‘Mera Gaon Mera Desh’ (1971), ‘Main Tulsi Tere Aangan Ki’ (1978) etc. His career as filmmaker spans the years 1955 to 1989. His last film in 1989 was the Rishi Kapoor- Amjad Khan- Farha Naaz starrer ‘Naqaab’.
Today’s song is a multi-singer song – we have Kishore Kumar, Lata Mangeshkar & Manna Dey singing an Anand Bakshi song that has the characters making merry after hoodwinking Anwar Hussain with Bindu’s help.
A small tidbit – there was also a Sanjay Dutt – Saif Ali Khan – Bipasha Basu film by the title ‘Nehle Pe Dehla’ in 2007.
Wish you A Very Happy Birthday Guru ji!!! Hope the great musical times continue.

arre duniya mein sab hum se darte hain
bade bade bas kaam hum karte hain

apna naam hai pehla
hum mein se har ek hai
