Hullo Atuldom

Wishing a very very happy birthday to a singer who has a career of almost 70 or 80 years. I am not sure about the last recorded song by this artist who has been in the public eye from the time she sang her first song, with her older sister, when she was barely 10. But, during the pandemic, in 2020, she came together with many noted artists like S. P. Balasubrahmanyam, Udit Narayan, Kailash Kher, Usha Uthup, Shaan, Alka Yagnik, Sonu Nigam and other 200 artists of India, made a song named ‘Jayatu Jayatu Bharatam’ to make the country unite to beat the pandemic.

Here we are wishing Asha Bhosle on turning 90.

She comes from a musical family, as her father Shri Deenanath Mangeshkar was an actor-singer of the Marathi musical stage. Her paternal grandmother, Deenanath’s mother, was also a reputed musician. There are many musicians in the family with Lata Mangeshkar being the leader (of her generation). Asha Bhosle’s son, daughter and grandchildren are also associated with the music world in various capacities.

We all know the struggles the Mangeshkar children went through, after the death of their father in 1942. The sisters Lata & Asha, began acting and singing in films to support the family. Asha Bhosle returned to face the camera in 2013, at the age of 79, to play the title role of “Aai”- a 65 year-old mother suffering from Alzheimer’s.

It is also known to all the fans of Indian film and non-film music about the range & variety of songs that the sisters have given their voice too. The sisters are also recipients of many awards- both national & international awards. What I found interesting is that Asha Bhosle has been awarded the Lata Mangeshkar award instituted by the Madhya Pradesh & Maharashtra governments in 1989 & 1999 respectively. Plus she is the recipient of the Dadasaheb Phalke & Padma Vibhushan awards conferred by the Government of India. Asha Tai (as she is fondly addressed) is also the National Award winning singer for songs ‘dil cheez kya hai’ from “Umrao Jaan” in 1981 & ‘mera kuchh saaman’ from “Ijaazat” in 1986.

For celebrating the landmark birthday of our dear singing Diva, I think we should have a song from one of her recent films, just to get an idea about how she sounded for the younger actresses. When I say younger actresses, I mean actresses who were popular in the 1990s & the new millennium. This is not an easy task considering that she has a huge body of work from which we need to choose. Statistically speaking, we are just reaching the halfway mark of her 7874 songs. The blog still has a long way to go before declaring that we have all the songs sung (in films) by Asha Bhonsle on the blog.

One of the younger ladies for whom Asha Bhosle has given playback is Karisma Kapoor of the Kapoor clan. Today’s song has Karisma dancing to Shiamak Davar’s choreography in Yash Chopra’s “Dil To Paagal Hai”. The song is written by Anand Bakshi and Uttam Singh was the composer. Towards the end of the song Shahrukh Khan makes his entry on to the stage, singing in Udit Narayan’s voice. This is the song that kicks-off the film. This is one song that has a choreography that is not easy to copy, also it is different from usual Hindi song sets (would like to know who the set designer was, Sharmista Roy was the art director). Another trivia about this song is Shahid Kapoor who was training under Shiamak Davar at that time was a background dancer in this song.

Wishing the favourite singer of millions- Asha Tai- a very Happy birthday.

Happy Birthday, dearest Ashaji!! 🎈🎉🎊🎁
Thank you Nalini for this wonderful write up. Again, I have a special song to mention & in case there’s no blog on it, please do write some day. The movie Lekin has just 1 song by Ashaji. It is highly classical but in a very appealing raag (probably Miaan ki Todi)!! (P.S a couple of years ago, you brought to my notice Man Anand Anand Chayo by Ashaji on Rekha 💞 anoyher difficult song due to range in higher octave)
As a puny fan (only in terms of musical knowledge n reach) of Ashaji, it is my dream to learn n sing that song.
