The above is not an attempt at any ‘Blog-Ten Year Challenge’. I was just looking up to see what were the films that appeared on the blog on that day ten years ago(8 december 2013) and the “YYIIPPEEEE” status of those movies.

Movie (Year) Songs status of the movie
Anaath Asharam(1937) 3 songs out of 15
Subah Ka Taara(1954) yyiippeeeed
Neel Kamal( 1947) yyiippeeeed

Recently, the blog touched 18100. In that post, Atulji pointed out that in the 79 days between post number 18000 & 18100 my small contribution was 16 posts. That means 16 songs in 12 weeks. And I was surprised that it is a case of some week having more than one song; this must have happened in the month of October when a few of my favourite heroes, heroines & singers had their birthdays & death anniversaries. But one thing is for sure, the frequency of my writing is erratic and I don’t know what excuses to offer. But here is taking fresh guard after my last, which was my 600th post.

“Gehri Chot” (1983) was initially released with the title “Door Desh” in March 1983 (as per some sites on the internet). The YouTube link for the film shows date of certificate issue as 30-11-1983; that confuses me further- how can the film release before getting a censor certificate.

On researching a little in the KNOWLEDGE BOX that the blog has become I found “Paanch Dushman” (1973) to be an almost similar case i.e. it was re-released with the title “Daulat Ke Dushman” in 1981. The reasons for the two title-changed re-release may be different but they may make an interesting case study.

Shall call the film “Door Desh”, as mentioned in the censor certificate, and the titles of the film starts as ‘Gehri Chot’ urf ‘Door Desh’. The film is listed on IMDB as an action-crime-drama & was an Indian- Canadian film directed by Ambrish Sangal; who was an assistant to J. Om Prakash during ‘Aya Sawan Jhoom Ke’ ; ‘Aan Milo Sajna’ etc. & later went on to make ‘Aatish’; ‘Aap toh aise na the’; ‘Dard’; ‘Suraag’ etc.

“Door Desh” had Shashi Kapoor, Sharmila Tagore, Raj Babbar, Parveen Babi, Nadeem Baig, Bobita (not to be confused with the Kapoor bahu Babita), David Abraham (in one of his last roles, he had already retired & settled in Canada by then) etc.

Bobita (Farida Akhtar Poppy) was an award winning Bangaldeshi actress, from her filmography it is evident that she has been active till 2015 as actress & is also a producer. Nadeem Baig (Mirza Nazeer Baig) is a Pakistani actor, singer, & producer regarded as the best all-time Pakistani actor in Heroic roles, and he is still working in films & television. “Door Desh” opens with a dedication to David Abraham who had died on 2nd January 1982, i.e. before the film released.

Usha Khanna was the music director & Indeevar the lyricist. Lata Mangeshkar, Asha Bhonsle, Usha Mangeshkar, Chandrani Mukherjee, Yesudas, Anwar & Usha Khanna (herself). Story -screenplay- dialogue was by Suraj Sanim.
The film was the story of an NRI (Shashi Kapoor) from Toronto who comes to India to marry a traditional Indian woman (Sharmila Tagore). The film then goes on to the adjustment problems the couple face & their separation after the birth of their kids- the son (Raj Babbar on growing up)goes back to India with the mother & daughter (Bobita) stays with the father. The family comes together 20 years later when there is a crisis, as the daughter has been kidnapped. The mother comes with the son to help trace the daughter.

Sharmila Tagore, whose birthday is on 8th December, made her debut in films through Bengali films in 1959. Her first Hindi film was in 1964 ‘Kashmir Ki Kali’ with Shammi Kapoor as her hero. 1965 was the first time she was paired with Shashi Kapoor, in B.R. Film’s ‘Waqt’.

The two of them were seen in 11 movies after that :-
Aamne Saamne (1967), Suhana Safar (1970), My Love (1970), Aa Gale Lag Jaa (1973), Paap Aur Punya (1974), Anari (1975), Gehri Chot urf Door Desh (1983), New Delhi Times, Maa Beti, Swati (all in 1986), Hum Toh Chale Pardes (1988).

Shashi Kapoor stopped acting in films sometime in the 1980s, but he did direct ‘Ajooba’ in 1990. He was seen in two Merchant-Ivory films in 1993 & 1998 and a British-Pakistani film, also in 1998. He died on 4th December 2017 due to liver & heart complications.

Thinking of the sweet & charming Shashi Kapoor today. Also wishing Sharmila Tagore all happiness & good health on her special day.
