Phir Aane Laga Yaad Wahi Pyaar Ka Aalam
This, and many other iconic compositions flow through the mind when the name Iqbal Qureshi is mentioned. One of that group of hugely talented music directors who never could break into the so called ‘Legendary Club’, no matter so many of his creations have become legends in as of themselves. Starting with his first film ‘Panchaayat’ from 1958 – the iconic duets “Taa Thaiya Karte Aana, O Jaadugar Morey Sainyyan” (Lata and Geeta) and “Haal Ye Kar Diya Zaalim Tere Tadpaane Ne” (Rafi and Lata), and browsing through musical gems of such films as ‘Bindya’ and ‘Love In Simla’ (both 1960), ‘Umar Qaid’ (1961), ‘Ye Dil Kisko Doon’ (1963), the legendary ‘Cha Cha Cha’ and the lilting ‘Qawwaali Ki Raat’ of 1964, ‘Sarhadi Lutera’ of 1966, on to strumming the songs of the unreleased ‘Pyaar Bana Afsaana’, all the way up to ‘Lakhpati’ of 1991. An era that is dotted with lilting creations of Iqbal Qureshi.
Remembering Iqbal Qureshi on his birth anniversary on 12th May. At 6 feet 4 inches, he was arguably the tallest member of the industry in his time.
He was born in Aurangabad on May 12, 1930, and was brought up in Hyderabad after his family moved there. Iqbal’s musical journey began at an early age. As a child, he performed for All India Radio. In Hyderabad, he used to sing at private gatherings, where he became friends with the famous poet Makhdoom Mohiuddin and actor/director Chandrashekhar. He was also a member of the Indian People’s Theatre Association (IPTA).
In Mumbai, impressed by his singing, Lekhraj Bhakri offered him his first film, ‘Panchayat’ (1958), which was also the debut film of Manoj Kumar. Besides the songs mentioned above, the film has hit numbers like “Aayi Aayi Bahaar Aaj Re, Karke Solah Singaar Aaj Re” by Lata Mangeshkar, and “Teri Yaad Dil Se Piya Jaaye Na” .
In 1960, he was called in by AVM for their film ‘Bindiya’ (1960), starring Balraj Sahni, Padmini, and Jagdeep, which has the Rafi gem “Main Apne Aap Se Ghabra Gaya Hoon”, and the Lata solo “Nasha Saa Chhaa Gaya Sanam Tere Pyaar Ka”. The same year he got his biggest break with S Mukherjee’s Filmalaya. ‘Love In Simla’ (1960) was a hit and became the launch pad for Joy Mukherjee and Sadhna. The film carried such gems like “Gaal Gulabi Kiske Hain” and ” Yoon Zindagi Ke Raaste Sanwaarte Chale Gaye” sung by Rafi, and “Dar Pe Aaye Hain Qasam Le” in the voice of Mukesh are still remembered fondly.
He went on to give soulful music in films like ‘Umar Qaid’ (1961), which has “Mujhe Raat Din Ye Khayaal Hai” by Mukesh and “O Piya Jaana Naa” in the voice of Asha Bhosle. In 1962 came ‘Banarsi Thug’ which has Rafi’s “Ab Muhabbat Mein Jo Pehle Thi Wo Taaseer Nahin“, and Lata Mangeshkar’s “Yaad Suhaani Teri Bani Zindagaani Meri” and Lata-Mukesh’s duet “Ek Baat Poochhta Hoon Gar Tum Bura Na Maano“. This was followed in 1963 by the film ‘Yeh Dil Kisko Doon’ which is remembered for many hit songs like “Phir Aane Laga Yaad Wahi Pyaar Ka Aalam” by Rafi and Usha Khanna and “Kitni Haseen Ho Tum” by Mohammed Rafi, the Asha-Mubarak Begum duet “Hamen Dum Dai Ke Sautan Ghar Jaana”, and the iconic Rafi-Asha duet “Jab Tak Duniya Rahi, Rahega Tera Naam Mera Naam”.
In 1964 came his most famous work, ‘Cha Cha Cha’ starring Helen and Chandrashekhar. The film features some of Hindi cinema’s most iconic melodies, including Makhdoom Muhiuddin’s classic nazam, “Ek Chameli Ke Mandwe Taley” sung by Mohammad Rafi and Asha Bhosle and the wonderful Mohammad Rafi solos – “Subah Na Aayi, Shaam Na Aayi” and “Woh Hum Na The Wo Tum Na The“. 1964 also saw the release of the film ‘Qawwali Ki Raat’ which carries some of the most famous qawwaalis of all times – “Kehne Waale Tu Bhi Keh Le Jo Dil Ki Baat Hai”, “Husn Waale Husn Ka Anjaam Dekh”, and “Jaate-Jaate Ik Nazar Bhar Dekh Lo”.
His other famous works include the films like ‘Pyar Bana Afsana’ (1966) (UR), ‘Sarhadi Lutera’ (1966), ‘Mohabbat Aur Jung (1967), ‘Do Thug (1970), ‘Dastaan-e-Laila Majnu’ (1974), ‘Sultan-e-Hind‘ (1978), and ‘Alam Ara’ (1973).
He continued to give music till the 1990s, composing for 28 films in all, including a Bhojpuri film ‘Kab Hoihain Gavanva Hamaar’ (1964). He passed away on March 21, 1998, in anonymity in Bombay.
For today’s song, I present this wonderful duet from the 1966 film ‘Sarhadi Lutera’. The words are from the pen of MA Taj and the singing voices are of Mohammed Rafi and Asha Bhosle. Incidentally, this song is not released on 78 rpm gramophone record. But the film is available and the video of the song has been uploaded on YT by Shahid Jaipuri. On screen the song is picturised on Salim Khan (of Salim-Javed fame) and the lesser known actress Sunita.

is ghata ke saath zara der jhoom lenge
hum nazar se aaj teri zulf choom lenge

Thank you Sudhir ji. Nice tribute to the talented Iqbal Qureishi. One small point – the song Aaj Mausam Ki Masti Mein is from the film Benarasi Thug of 1962.

Dear Arindam ji
Good to hear from you. And also good catch. My bad, I mixed up the two films.
Correction has now been updated in the post above.
Thanks and regards
