Atul’s Song A Day- A choice collection of Hindi Film & Non-Film Songs

Subaha na aayi shaam na aayi

Posted on: January 23, 2009

Few people have heard the name of the movie (Cha Cha Cha) or that of the music director (Iqbal Qureshi), but what music this movie had !

And this movie is also special for the reason that Helen, who would typically get one cabaret song in a movie, was actually the leading lady in this movie. Here she plays a Bhartiya nari, full of sufferings , sacrifices and all.

Naturally, she gets many songs in this movie than was usual for her.

This particular song has been picturised on Helen alright, but it has not been sung by a female playback singer. It has been sung by Rafi and the song gets played in the background while a bed ridden Helen is seen making a brave attempt to get out of the bed, first by means of the crutches, and later, without crutches too.

And what about the song sung by Rafi ? Divine ! This song is very well known, though few people may know that this song is from Cha Cha Cha. It is a wonderful song to listen to, and indeed one can listen to this be it subah (morning) or shaam (evening).

Song-Subaha na aayi shaam na aayi (Cha Cha Cha) (1964) Singer-Rafi, Lyrics-Neeraj, MD-Iqbal Qureshi

khushi jisne khoji wo dhan leke lautaa
hansi jisne khoji chaman leke lautaa
magar pyaar ko khojne jo chalaa wo
na tan leke lautaa na man leke lautaa

subaha na aayi, shaam naa aayi
subaha na aayi, shaam naa aayi
jis din teri yaad na aayi, yaad na aayi
subaha naa aayi, shaam naa aayi

kaisi lagan lagi ye tujh se, kaisi lagan ye lagi
hansi kho gayi, khushi kho gayi
aansoo tak sab rahan ho gaye
arthi tak sab neelaam ho gayi
arthi tak sab neelaam ho gayi
duniyaa ne dushmani nibhaayi, yaad naa aayi
subaha naa aayi, shaam naa aayi

tum mil jaate to ho jaati poori apni raam kahaani
khandhar taaj mahal ban jaataa, ganga jal aankhon kaa paani
saanson ne hathkadi lagaayi yaad naa aayi
subaha naa aayi, shaam naa aayi

jaise bhi ho, tum aa jaao
jaise bhi ho, tum aa jaao
aa jaao aa jaao
jaise bhi ho, tum aa jaao
aag lagi hai tan mein aur man mein
aag lagi hai tan mein aur man mein
ek taar ki doori hai
ek taar ki doori hai
bas daaman aur qafan mein
huyi maut ke sang sagaayi, yaad naa aayi
aa jaao, aa jaao, aa jaao
aa jaao, aa jaao,

Each and every song of yours today is such a gem that I have no words to express the way I felt when I was listening to them. I am so glad I discovered this blog of yours, and it was purely by accident when I was trying to look up some lyrics for one of my favorite songs.

Keep up the great work, Atul.

Wonderful! I added you to my blogroll. 🙂
All the best!

Thanks, Lalitha, and Thanks Sitaji.

Producer Chandrashekhar was a close friend of Shankar (Jaikishan) and it is said that this song was influenced heavily with his input. The next film of Chandrashekhar as a product It had music by er was “Street Singer,” also a low budget film. Music was by Suraj (SJ brand for low budget)

So SJ lite=Suraj
Thanks for this interesting information.

hi atul
the video here is not there

Here is the video link on youtube :

Thank u for reminding me of this song, whichi had not heard for a long time.

Such simplicity in rendition of a simple composition and lyrics that makes Rafi the legend. Words seem inadequate to describe the experience. As Mr. Atul says ” Divine voice” is the word.

great music, lyrics n singing. this is a great song n i love to listen it in solitude. i like this post.

Lovely song. Beautifully sung by Rafi saab. It is also nice to see Helen is a different role.
