#The Decade of Seventies – 1971 – 1980 #

#Happy Birthday – Shailendra Singh 4th October#
——————————————

‘Taraana-1979’ was directed by Deepak Bahri for ‘Chanda Pictures’. It was presented by Rajshri Productions and produced by Tarachand Barjatya. The cast of this movie included Ranjeeta, Mithun Chakraborty, Dr Shreeram Lagoo, Urmila Bhatt, Jayshree T., Sharat Saxena, and Om Shivpuri. They were supported by Yunus Parvez, Janki Das, Sundar, Bhagwan, Shakeel, Satyabhan Sinha, Naresh, Pardesi, Master Sandeep, Shobha Khote, Mala Jaggi, Uma Khosla, and Jagdeep. The story, screenplay and dialogues of this movie were written by Khalid & Narvi. Editing of this film was done by Mukhtar Ahmed.

This movie has as many as twelve songs where lyricist Ravindra Rawal and Tilakraj Thapar penned six songs each. Usha Mangeshkar, Shailendra Singh, Aarti Mukherjee, Jagjit Singh, Dilraj Kaur, Chetan and Varsha Bhonsle had given their voices to the songs in this movie. Music for this movie was composed by Raamlaxman. Out of the twelve songs, the voice of singer Shailendra Singh featured in seven songs in this movie. So far four songs from this movie have been posted on the blog. Voice of Shailendra Singh is there in two of these songs.

Today 4th October’2024 is the seventy-second birthday of singer Shailendra Singh. On this occasion I am presenting a song sung by him which is a nice song and I like it very much.

Singer and actor Shailendra Singh was born in Mumbai on 4th October 1952. He came from a Punjabi family but since he grew up in Mumbai he could not talk fluently in Punjabi (as informed by him in an interview for TV).
Shailendra Singh’s father was associated with V. Shantaram ji as a Chief Assistant Director and later on with Rajshri Productions (as a ‘Publicity Officer’ from ‘Dosti’), so he came from a family with film background and it was natural for him to get attracted to movies.

After his schooling with Hill Green High Schoo’, Feder Road, Bombay, he joined St Xavier’s College in Mumbai but later he left his studies in the third year as he was interested in acting, and given his looks he wanted to be an actor. So, he joined Film and Television Institute at Pune in acting course in 1971 when he was around eighteen years old. He was also learning music or rather singing from his childhood days but he never aspired to become a playback singer. He was more interested in singing ghazals.

It so happened that Raj Kapoor was looking for a new voice to launch Rishi Kapoor in ‘Bobby-1973’ and V.P. Sathe (of ‘Bombay Publicity’ and script writer for Raj Kapoor) who was a close friend of Shailendra Singh’s father was aware of Shailendra Singh’s singing abilities. V.P. Sathe and K.A. Abbas were working jointly as script writer for Raj Kapoor. V. P. Sathe suggested Shailendra Singh’s name to Raj Kapoor for the new voice he was looking for. At that time Shailendra Singh was pursuing his course in acting at the FTII, Poona and was in second year (of two-year course). He was called for the voice test by Raj Kapoor. Raj Kapoor took him to Laxmikant-Pyarelal where Laxmikant took his test with four or five musicians (one of them was Rajesh Roshan).

After few days Shailendra Singh was told about his selection. The first song that he recorded was ‘main shaayar to nahin’ for ‘Bobby-1973’. This was also the ‘mahurat song’ for ‘Bobby’ and Lata Mangeshkar was also present there to bless him on this ‘mahurat song. That was the beginning of the singing career of Shailendra Singh in Hindi films.

Around the same time director Manmohan Desai also spotted Shailendra Singh and selected him to sing for his movie when he was already selected as a playback singer fore ‘Bobby’. However, Manmohan Desai assured Raj Kapoor that his movie would be released only after ‘Bobby’ was released. The songs of ‘Bobby’ became very popular then and Shailendra Singh was nominated for the ‘Best Male Playback Singer’ for the song ‘main shaayar to nahin’. However he didn’t win the award.

Shailendra Singh got his first acting break for the movie ‘Do Jaasoos – 1975’. (Later on, he acted in his father’s home production ‘Agreement-1980’, and he had done guest appearance in ‘Naukar-1979’ and Mehmood’s – ‘Janta Hawaldar-1979’. He acted in a Bengali film as a hero with Aparna Sen and the movie was ‘Ajosro Dhanyobaad (Many Many Thanks).

I remember watching ‘Do Jaasoos’ with my Uncle and its songs are there in my memory since then. The song – ‘purvaiyya leke chali meri naiyya’ sung by Shailendra Singh and Lata Mangeshkar is one song which has a magicaleffect on me and I find myself transported to 1975 whenever I listen to this song.

Songs from the movie ‘Bobby’ are ofcourse part of my growing up days . These songs of “Bobby” were played frequently on loudspeakers/radio. But as I had not watched this movie its songs failed to impress me unlike most people. ‘Rafoo Chakkar’ songs were a different matter. Its song ‘tumko o mere dil ne’ is my all-time favourite and it brings back memories.

There are many such songs sung by Shailendra Singh which are part of my childhood nostalgia and I like them very much e.g. songs like ‘pyaar mein kabhi kabhi aisa ho jaata hai’, ‘gunche lage hain kehne’, ‘meri dilruba tujhko aana padega’, ‘mere bas mein agar kuchh hota’, ‘hamne tumko dekha, tumne ham dekha aise’, ‘hoga tumse pyaara kaun’ etc .

Today I am presenting this song ‘meri dilruba tujhko aana padega’ from ‘Taraana-1979’ sung by Shailendra Singh. Lyrics are by Tilakraj Thapar and music is composed by Raamlaxman. Mithun Chakravarty lip-syncs this song. We can see Ranjeeta and Jayshree T in the picturisation of this song.

This song is shot at some beautiful outdoor locations. There is an aalaap in a female voice lip-synced by Ranjeeta who as Rani arrives to see her beloved Shyam (Mithun Chakravarty) and the songs ends there. The name of this female voice is not mentioned in Geet Kosh.

Let us listen to this song now…
