“Baadshah” (1999) was directed by the Alibhai Burmawalla brothers ‘Abbas- Mastan’ who have been making films since 1985, starting with Gujarati films. ‘Agneekaal’ (1990) starring Jeetendra- Raj Babbar- Madhavi- Sadashiv Amrapurkar- Kiran Kumar & others was their first in Hindi.
Ganesh Jain- Bhawar Jain- Girish Jain of ‘Venus Tapes’ were the producers of “Baadshah”. Anu Malik was the music director of the 6 songs written by Sameer (4) and Javed Akhtar (2). The playback singers used were Abhijeet, Alka Yagnik, Anu Malik, & Shah Rukh Khan also mouths a few words in one of the songs.
The cast was headed by SRK, Twinkle Khanna, Rakhee, Amrish Puri, Johnny Lever, Sharat Saxena, Deepshika, Pankaj Dheer, Sudhir, Saurabh Shukla, Sachin Khedekar, Razzak Khan & many known faces of Bollywood walking through the film. Prem Chopra, Shashikala, Anant Mahadevan, Dipak Tijori, had special appearances.
SRK (Shahrukh Khan) played a bumbling detective (Baadshah) with Sudhir, Johnny Lever, Sharad Sankhla, Harpal as his team mates & his agency having a whole lot of cheesy detective gadgets. To confuse the viewer there is Sharat Saxena, who is contract killer ‘Moti’ has the nickname ‘Baadshah’. Plus, Dipak Tijori (in a special appearance) plays a CBI Agent with the codename ‘Baadshah’ who is bumped off by ‘Baadshah’ alias Moti. Later Deepshika’s path crosses with that of ‘Baadshah’ (SRK) & she informs Moti of the error. Many ‘cat-n-mouse’ moments follow between the Baadshah/s before the film reaches its climax.
The film was a ‘slapstick comedy- action-thriller- crime’ with a tiny ounce of romance in it. The film may not have been a commercial success to the level that SRK films of that period were, but personally, I love to see a few scenes & songs of that film. Today’s song is one such instance of the film. It is in the beginning of the film, when Baadshah has just come out of a casino after outsmarting Razzak Khan and gaining access to a bag of Diamonds that Razzak has embezzled off Ananth Mahadevan. On his way out of the casino, Baadshah is stopped by cops for the damage he has caused in the casino. He handles the situation by getting the cops & the general public into the dance mayhem.
Five years back, on 2nd November 2019, the first song from this film was posted. In that post I had said a few things about our Sudhirji which still holds true. His posts on the blog are very informative. He also doubles as Atulji’s lieutenant where it comes to keeping the blog without a ‘Blank Day’. Here is wishing him a very Happy Birthday.
With this post we also wish the Baadshah of Bollywood Shahrukh Khan a.k.a SRK on his birthday which takes him towards his 60th birthday.
There is a third person who has his birthday today- the music director of this film Anu Malik. He has been in the industry since 1975.
We have many films of SRK with music by Anu Malik which have been popular & in public memory too. But I am afraid today’s song doesn’t figure in many playlists. It is sung by Abhijeet (who went closer to 70 on 30th of October) & written by Javed Akhtar.
