Yesterday (26 January 2025) was 75th Republic day of India. It was a sunday and I wonder if some people who had to turn up for flag unfurling in their workplaces were unhappy that they had to come to office even on a sunday. 🙂 I also wonder if some school kids felt the same way. Back in my school days (which I am aghast to realise was half a century ago), school kids looked up to this day and 15th august because it meant every student got laddoos to eat. Many school kids even brought their younger siblings (who had not yet started going to school) with them because they too got laddoos on the occasion. 🙂 Perhaps some of these young kids were motivated to go to school later because of this fact.
I recall that one of my classmates had decided that he would become a member of school football team when he reached class nine. His reason was simple, players of the football team got jalebis after each practice session. 🙂 He actually became a member of the football team as he had planned. 🙂 I hope school kids of today have the same motivation alive in them to come to school, play in their school team etc. 🙂
As for grown ups coming to their workplaces during these occasions, I turned up at my workplace nearly always. My cause was helped by the fact that I was more often than not the boss of my office and I had to unfurl the tricolour on Republic day and hoist it on Independence day. 🙂
The very first time I did this job was at Purna (Maharashtra) on 26 January 1993 where I was the overall incharge of Mechanical department. My jurisdiction was over a geographical area that was comparable in size to Bangladesh and Nepal and included places like Parli Baijnath, Akola, Aurangabad, Manmad, Khandwa, Adilabad, Parbhani, Nanded etc. 🙂
There were occasions when I was posted under someone else, like for example in Secunderabad, I was posted in Lallaguda workshop under Chief Workshop manager. I did not turn up at the workshop on those days. No, it did not mean that I sat at home. The state of Andhra Pradesh held its function at the parade ground and different departments presented their tableaus on the parade ground. South Central Railway also participated in the state government function. Making tableaus of Railways was the responsibility of Lallaguda Workshop. In the workshop, I was the in charge of getting these tableaus made. The best three tableaus got awards from state government. I along with my workshop staff would spend a few weeks making our tableau on a lorry and then take it to the parade ground on the appointed day. The tableaus would typically depict some important landmarks of South Central Railway falling in the jurisdiction of Andhra Pradesh. On one occasion, we made a replica of Kacheguda Railway station as the tableau. This tableau was adjusted the best tableau of that occasion.
Whenever we won the first prize on the occasion, The Chief PRO of the Railway would be informed. Most likely he himself would be available on the parade ground. He would then contact our top boss viz General Manager who would then turn up at the site and congratulate us and get his photo clicked with us. I have fond memories of winning many such prizes for South Central Railways from the state government and getting our photos clicked with him, with the tableau visible behind us. 🙂
One important thing in all parades, where ever they were held were cultural programmes. I realise that I have been posted in almost every part of the country. So during these occasions I have witnessed cultural programmes of almost all major states of the country, be in Andhra, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Assam, Nagaland, MP, Rajasthan, Chhatisgarh, UP, Uttarakhand etc.
When I was posted in Izatnagar workshop as Chief Workshop Manager, I reported there on 13 August 2015. I thought that like at all places there would be flag hoisting on 15 August 2015 there. But I was told that the workshop does not have any flag hoisting/ unfurling function and the workshop staff attend the function of Division Railway Manager. I resolved that the workshop will have this function from the next occasion. So on 26 January 2016, Izatnagar workshop for the first time in its history saw national flag being unfurled. I set a precedence and my lead is now being followed there ever since.
Subsequently, I was transferred at Gorakhpur, there too as Chief Workshop manager. There was a well settled practice of flag unfurling/ hoisting there. In Gorakhpur, I would first attend General Manager’s function and they proceed to my workshop with motorbike borne flag waving volunteers escorting my vehicle.
Now that I am retired, now I have the luxury of watching these republic days/ independence day programmes on TV. Like for instance, I watched the full Republic day programme yesterday. I must say the coverage was very good and very informative.
Indonesian President was the Chief Guest on the occasion. It turned out that Indonesian President was also the chief guest when India celebrated its first Republic day function on 26 January 1950.
I found that things were much different in 1950 than what they are now. On 26 January 1950, India was proclaimed a Sovereign Democratic Republic at 10:18 AM, and Dr Rajendra Prasad was sworn in as first President soon there after. The 26 January 1950 parade took place not at Raj path (now called Kartavya Path) but at National Stadium.
The practice of parade taking place on Rajpath started from 1955.
Today, we take it for granted that when a country is invited as chief guest then it is represented by its ruler. But that was not the case during the earlier years. When India invited Japan as chief guest in 1954, Japan was represented by their Chief Justice in 1956. When India invited China in 1958, China sent its Military Chief. The most ridiculous situation was in 1965 when India Invited Pakistan as chief guest. Pakistan sent their Agriculture Minister. Imagine agriculture minister being chief guest and sharing space with President and prime Minister of India. I wonder how this snub was digested by Indians at that time. Today, even USA is represented by its President if USA is invited as Chief guest. Barak Obama, then President of USA was the chief guest on 26 January 2015.
The parade function is extremely impressive. The motorbike stunts that is shown towards the end of the function is something that is mind numbing. The fly past of aircrafts that is the last programme takes one’s breath away.
This time, there was a special programme where over 5000 folk artists from different corners of country performed. Choreographing their performance must have been a mammoth exercise.
It was heart warming to see Indonesian military band also participating in the parade.
I read in a news item that the Indonesian delegation was hosted by President on India for a dinner on 25 January 2025 and on this occasion, Indonesian delegation members sang the title song of “Kuchh Kuchh Hota Hai”(1998). Sitting in India, we cannot imagine how popular Indian movies are in Asia and Africa and also in other parts of the globe. The fact that Indian movies have moved on from showing Indians as suffering and crying and now show them as prosperous NRI has helped them gain global audience. I know that Bahubali was very popular in Indonesia. I suppose “Kuchh Kuchh Hota Hai”(1998) must have enjoyed similar popularity in Indonesia in 1998. In any case Indonesians and other Asian countries can identify with Indian stories and characters much more than they can identify with Western movies and characters.
When I checked up, I realised that “Kuchh Kuchh Hota Hai”(1998) is not yet represented in the blog. If Indonesians are so fond of this movie, and they sang it in Rashtrapati Bhavan on 25 January 2025, then I suppose this song deserves to be represented in the blog as well.
So here it is. It is being showcased in the blog as the 18800th song in the blog. Yes, this song takes the blog to the mark of 18800 song posts. Previous century was clocked on 21 December 2024. So this century gets notched in 37 days. A reasonably fast century by our present standards. At this rate, we should be looking at the magic figure of 19000 by April 2025.
The song under discussion is sung by Kavita Krishnamurthy, Alka Yagnik and Udit Narayan. The song is picturised on Rani Mukherjee, Kajol and Sharrukh Khan. Sameer is the lyricist. Music is composed by Jatin Lalit.
The singing, the lyrist, the music, the picturisation, all are breathtaking. No wonder even Indonesians are in love with this song.
Personally, I had difficulty differentiating in the voices of the two female singers. They sound so alike. So my colour coding could be wrong.
I have not watched the movie so I have no idea why Shahrukh Khan is seen with Rani Mukherjee and moment and with Kajol the next moment. I request our knowledgeable readers to throw light on the picturisation of this song.
With this song, “Kuchh Kuchh Hota Hai”(1998) makes its debut in the blog. The movie needs to thank Indonesian delegation whose singing prompted me to pick this song as the century song for the blog. 🙂
I take this opportunity to thank one and all for their continued support and encouragement in various forms that is keeping this musical bandwagon going on and on. Now we take fresh guard and proceed on to the next destination.
This song by the way has a sad version too. I do not know why the movie makers cannot see the movie watchers happy all the time. 🙂
Happy version

tumne na jaane kya sapne dikhaaye
ab to mera dil
jaage na sota hai
kya karoon haaye
kuchh kuchh hota hai
kya karoon haaye
kuchh kuchh hota hai
tum paas aaye
yoon muskuraaye
tumne na jaane kya sapne dikhaaye
ab to mera dil
jaage na sota hai
kya karoon haaye
kuchh kuchh hota hai
kya karoon haaye
kuchh kuchh hota hai
na jaane kaisa ehsaas hai
bujhtee naheen hai kya pyaas hai
kya nasha is pyaar ka
mujhpe sanam
chhaane laga aa
koi na jaane
kyun chain khota hai
kya karoon haaye
kuchh kuchh hota hai
kya karoon haaye kuchh kuchh hota hai
aa aa aa aa aa

kya rang laayee meri dua, ye ishq jaane kaise hua
bechainiyon mein chain

tanhai me dil yaaden sanjota hai
kya karoon haaye kuchh kuchh hota hai
kya karoon haaye kuchh kuchh hota hai
tum paas aaye
yoon muskuraaye
tumne na jaane kya sapne dikhaaye
tum paas aaye
yoon muskuraaye
tumne na jaane kya sapne dikhaaye
ab to mera dil
jaage na sota hai
kya karoon haaye
kuchh kuchh hota hai
kya karoon haaye
kuchh kuchh hota hai
