‘Parmaatmaa’ (1978) seems to be a forgotten film now. I do not remember to have heard the name of the film during my younger days. The film was produced by Kuljeet Pal under the banner of Parashakti Pictures and was directed by Chand. The star cast included Shatrughan Sinha and Rekha in the lead roles with Pradeep Kumar, Aruna Irani, Imtiaz Khan, Ranjeet, Dev Kumar, Jagdish Raj, Chand Usmani, Helen and Komilla Work in the supporting roles. Probably, this was Shatrughan Sinha’s first film in a lead role and that too the first time he paired with Rekha in a lead role. It appears that the film took a long time to get a theatrical release as I find that song album on LP was issued in 1976 and the film was released in November 1978.

I became aware of this film only when the film’s VCD surfaced online only about 3-month back. I have watched the film recently. It is an action film in which a priest is abducted by a gang and is pressurised to reveal the whereabout of a temple treasure valued in crores which is located somewhere near a temple in Ramgaon. But soon the priest is rescued by an escapee prisoner. The priest is impressed and he takes the prisoner with him to the temple as his disciple making him to wear the religious attire. Over a period of time, the disciple wins over the villagers. But the priest is unaware that the person who had rescued him was in reality decoit gang leader who did the drama of rescuing him to gain his confidence and get to know the whereabout of the secret treasure. Later, the revelation of the disciple being Mahant’s son who has gone missing for a long time and the faith of the villagers in him as a holy man turns the decoit gang leader from stealing the treasure to the saviour of the treasure for the community’s welfare. He restores the temple’s treasure and surrenders to the police as an act of deliverance for his past crimes at the cost of the separation from his love interest. The story in details is as under:

A decoit gang led by Zorawar Singh (Imtiaz Khan), a close aid of decoit gang leader, Bhairon Singh, abducts Mahant Gururaj (Pradeep Kumar), a temple priest of Ramgaon village. He tortures Mahant to get the whereabout of the secret treasure of the temple. But Mahant does not reveal the location of the secret treasure despite torture. A prisoner who is on the run after breaking the jail sees Mahant being tortured. He fights with the gang and rescued Mahant. The jail escapee (Shatrughan Sinha) introduces himself as a prisoner. Mahant was a professor in a college in Kolkata but he renounced the social life due to some sad happening in his life and has become a hermit. Regardless of his background, Mahant is impressed by the act of the prisoner rescuing from the gang. He takes the jail escapee with him to the temple and introduces him as Anand, his disciple. Among the villagers who are impressed with his presence is Deepa (Rekha) because of his ‘spiritual’ conversations with her with an intention to woo her.

There is another gang, a sophisticated one led by Johnny (Ranjeet) who is also after the temple’s secret treasure. He does not believe in dacoit type of operation like that of Bhairon Singh but believes in using agents to get the secret without much of the bloodsheds. One of his most trusted agent is Lily (Aruna Irani) to whom he entrusts the job of unearthing the secret place of the treasure. Lily reaches Ramgaon in the guise of a devotee where she meets Anand in the temple and exposes him of his vices which he is continuing despite being a disciple. Even, Mahant Gururaj comes to know about his vices. But instead of reprimanding him, he counsels him.

In the meantime, Zorawar Singh sends his armed men to Ramgaon to abduct Mahant Gururaj once again and bring him to his dungeon to get the secret of the treasure. However, the timely presence of Anand prevents his abduction. Once again, Mahant Gururaj is impressed with Anand and reveals that Bhairon Singh is after the treasure of the temple which has accumulated valuables since many years from the offerings of jewelleries by devotees which runs into crores of rupees. Being his disciple, Mahant tells Anand that he should also know the place where the treasure is safely kept if something happens to him. Lily secretly hears this conversations as well as the way to the secret treasure and convey this information to Johnny.

Mahant has shown all the boxes of treasure of the temple to Anand in an underground chamber. Suddenly Anand points the double barrel gun to Mahant which he has snatched from one of the abductors and reveals that he himself is Bhairon Singh and the one who had abducted him earlier was his deputy, Zorawar Singh disguising as Bhairon Singh. He has planned the drama of rescuing him from Zorawar Singh to gain his confidence in him to know the secret of the temple treasure which now he knows. But Anand’s attempt is short-lived as Johnny with his gang storm inside the cave. Mahant gets seriously injured by a gun shot while resisting Johnny. Anand rushes toward Mahant to take care of him. Johnny and his men transport the entire treasure including the ornaments on the deity in their cars to their dungeon in Mumbai.

On the death bed, Mahant sees a locket in the neck of Anand which identifies him to be his son, Raju. He reveals him that during a dacoity in his house, Mahant’ wife got killed and the son, Raju wss abducted by gang leader, Girdhari (Dev Kumar). With this revelation, there is a transformation in Anand who now vows to take a revenge against Girdhari and restore the temple treasure. He tells the villagers that he would leave the village after the cremation of Mahant. However, villagers including Deepa force Anand to take over as Mahant of the temple as was decided by Mahant Gururaj. Villagers have a great faith in Anand as he has been able to cure children when ill. So, they believe that Anand has the same healing power as Mahant had.

Based on a police complaint lodged at the village police station, the dacoity is being investigated by Inspector (Jagdish Raj). He suspects that there is someone in the village who has provided the information to the gang. The police carry out the parade of the suspected persons matching the partial description of a suspect person given by an eye witness. The eye witness is shown only facial part of the suspects who identifies a person. When he comes out fully, he turns out to be Anand. The eye witness pleads Anand to forgive him for wrongly idenfying a holy man. This event strengthens the belief in faith.

In Mumbai, Johnny has to find out a buyer who can buy the entire temple treasure without the notice of the police. He puts his men to scout for a smuggler who has connection with an international gang. In Ramgaon, Anand informs the villagers that Mahant Gururaj had come in his dream and directed him to retrieve the temple treasure. For this purpose, he has to leave for Mumbai. Deepa also accompanies him under the pretext that he would need her help during his dealing with risky people.

Both Anand and Deepa reach Mumbai, disguised as Anthony Anand and Suraangini Aman, respectively. They check-in a hotel telling the receptionist that they have come from Paris and he has a business interest in buying and selling old and antique jewelleries. This conversation is heard by one of the Johnny’s men which is passed on to his boss. Johnny deputes Lily to check in the same hotel to keep a track on Anthony to know whether he is a genuine person interested in buying of gold jewelleries. In the hotel, Lily accidentally meets Anthony and Suraangini at the hotel’s swimming pool. Anand, now Anthony has already seen Lily while she was in the temple at Ramgaon. So, he has to be careful in his disguise. From the conversations they had, it appears to Lily that Anthony is interested in buying Jewelleries. Johnny invites him to a party hosted by him so that they can discuss the business deal of jewelleries. Anthony agrees and joins the party with Deepa.

After the party, Johnny takes Anthony to his underground dungeon where he has kept the entire temple treasure on display for Anthony. With deal done, Johnny and Anthony agree that the temple treasure will be handed over to Anthony at a pre-designated place against the payment. In the meantime, Anthony/Bhairon Singh has to convince his deputy, Zorawar Singh as well as Deepa who now knows the real identity of Anand as Bhairon Singh. He reveals to her that he is the son of the Late Mahant Gururaj and assures Deepa that his sole intention of the strategy is to restore the temple treasure to Ramgaon so that benefits accrue for the people.

Jhonny with his gang and his father, Girdhari reach the pre-designated spot with temple treasure loaded in the vehicles while Anthony and Deepa join them. Anthony says that he would bring the briefcase filled with money. Instead, Anthony transform himself in Bhairon Singh’s decoit attire with his gang members surrounding Johnny, Girdhari and his men. Fierce fights between two gangs and between Johnny and Bhairon Singh take place in which Johnny gets accidentally killed by Girdhari while aiming his knife at Bhairon Singh. While fighting with Bhairon Singh, Girdhari gets struck his metal hand with knife in a tree branch making him immobile. A cobra bite kills Girdhari. Bhairon Singh restores the Temple treasure to Ramgaon and surrenders to the police as his act of deliverance for his past crimes at the cost of separation from Deepa.

The influence of Dev Anand in this film is evident. The role of Shatrughan Sinha has some shades of the role played by Dev Anand in ‘Guide’ (1965) after his release from the jail as a Swami. Just as Dev Anand is trapped by the villagers’ belief that he is a holy man, likewise, Shatrughan Sinha is forced to become the Mahant after the death of Pradeep Kumar as they believe Shatrughan Sinha to be a holy man who has power to heal villagers problem. When Shatrughan Sinha disguises himself as Anthony, he mimics Dev Anand’s style throughout in this role to differentiate his role of the desciple, Anand.

The film had the potential to become an interesting one but for the poor screenplay. Probably, the film’s delay in completion may have caused many adjustments and some breaks in continuity process. An unusual feature of this film is that the lead pair Shatrughan Sinha and Rekha do not get united at the end as Shatrughan Sinha surrenders to the police for his past crimes for which he may have to spend long years in prison.

The film had seven songs written by Indeevar and set to music by K Babuji. I present the first song, ‘suraanginee kamaal karegee’ sung by Asha Bhosle, Bhupinder Singh and Chorus. The song is picturised on Rekha, and Shatrughan Sinha as a party dance song in which Ranjeet with Aruna Irani also join. The lyrics of the song also contain some English lines which are rendered by Bhupinder Singh for Ranjeet in the first antara and for Shatrughan Sinha in the second and third antaras. For the first time, I watched Shatrughan Sinha dancing in a party song mimicking Dev Anand’s style. Rekha also seems to mimic Zeenat Aman while singing ‘dam maaro dam’ part of the song.

The context of the song is that Anand disguising as Anthony (Shatrughan Sinha) and Deepa disguising as Suraangini Aman (Rekha) are invited to a party hosted by Johnny (Ranjeet) to discuss the deal of temple treasure for which Anthony has shown interest.

The tune and orchestration of the song give a feel of a Goan folk song. But in reality, it is the Hindi version of a very popular Sinhalese pop song, called bailaa song, rendered by A E Manoharan (Anthony Emmanuel Manoharan) which was released in 1972. A Tamil version of this song was composed by Ilaiyaraja for the film, ‘Avar Enakke Sontham’ (1977). Probably, the song may have versions in other languages. Because of the popularity of the song, A E Manoharan got acting assignments in Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Malayalam films, making him to shift his base from Sri Lanka to Chennai. He has also worked in three Hindi films released in the 1980s with the name, Ceylon Manohar.

With this song, the film, ‘Parmaatmaa’ (1978) makes its debut on the Blog.

@Kamath Saheb,

First of all thanks a lot for bringing this song here. It was in my wish list. But I was waiting to watch this movie which could not happen due to reason one another. I had listened to this song quite few times since I came across it couple of years back (or may be more than that) while browsing for songs sung by Bhupinder Singh.

Enjoyed the post and reading your presentation of the story of this movie here. I am sure you must have enjoyed watching this movie as it seems to be a carrying the ‘magic’ of the movies from the ‘seventies’. I think the MD K Babuji is making a debut here on the blog today. His filmography has three Hindi movies on his name. (Any more details about him?).

Thanks again,

Regards,

Avinash

Avinash ji,

Thanks for liking the post.

I was surprised as to how this song was not covered on the Blog, In fact, I got reconfirmed with Atul ji that this film itself had not debuted on the Blog.

Yes, music director, K Babuji makes a debut on the Blog. I tried my best to get atleast some background information on him but could not find anything online except his filmography.

what a song Sadanandji!!! Thank you so much for introducing it, never seen of heard it before.

indeed, it is a pleasure to see specially the points that you have highlighted:-

Rekha briefly mimicking Zeenat Aman’s ‘Dum Maro Dum’ step & Shatrughan Sinha mimicking Dev Anand. even Bhupinder’s ‘YODELLING’ which was Kishore Kumar’s forte’. seems like this song was meant to be a Kishore Kumar Asha Bhosle duet.

I have seen a few songs which had Ranjeet dancing/ shaking his leg; looking at this song I feel he was wasted as a character actor. recently, i saw a few videos on YouTube where Ranjeet has spoken about how he entered films as brother tot Waheeda Rehman & Rekha. and the first film where he played a negative character. after seeing that film, Ranjeet’s father disowned him. It was Rakhee who spoke to Ranjeet’s father and cleared the misunderstanding that his character in ‘Sharmilee’ had caused

Peevesie’s Mom,

Thanks for your additional observations on the song.

When I watched Shatrughan Sinha in the role of Anthony in the film, I was reminded of one more actor who was specifically told by the film’s director to mimic Dev Anand’s style. That actor was Rajesh Khanna in ‘Araadhana’ (1969) in the role of Sharmila Tagore’s son.

Incidentally, the picturisation of the song under discussion was done in Hotel Horizon at Juhu Beach (now defunct) as revealed by Shekhar Suman in an interview.
