Hullo Atuldom
Many celebrities, whom fans of Indian films have been following, have their landmark birthdays this year. Example, Aamir, Shahrukh & Salman all become 60 this year. Some singers turn 40, 50, 60 & 70.
Hariharan Anantha Subramani (born 3 April 1955) is an Indian playback, bhajan and ghazal singer who predominantly sings in Tamil, Malayalam, Hindi, Kannada and Telugu languages. He has also sung a number of notable songs in 10+ languages including Marathi, Sinhala, Maithili, Bhojpuri, Odia, Bengali, Sanskrit, Gujarati and English. He is an established ghazal singer and one of the pioneers of Indian fusion music. We all know him as HARIHARAN. And today he turn 70. Unbelievable, isn’t it?
Hariharan was born in a Tamil family to classical musicians H. A. S. Mani and Alamelu Mani. H. A. S. Mani – affectionately called Chellamani – groomed many Carnatic singers in Mumbai. Hariharan’s mother Alamelu Mani (born 1934 or 35) has had a long career as Carnatic vocalist and a distinguished teacher (she was honoured with the title Sangeeta Pracharya in 2019).
{I learnt about Hariharan’s parents as I sat to write this post. No wonder he has such control over his voice, swar, taal etc.}
Hariharan started his career on the concert circuit & also performed on television sometime in the 1970s. In 1998, he with Leslie Lewis (son of yesteryear Hindi film choreographer P.L. Raj) formed a band named Colonial Cousins. His discography has Studio Albums with songs of various genres, and film songs in all the languages he has sung in. The Hindi film song list begins with ‘Gaman’ of 1978 under Jaidev’s music direction. Post that he has sung under the baton of Salil Chowdhury, Usha Khanna, R.D.Burman, Laxmi-Pyare, RaajKamal, Shiv-Hari, A.R. Rehman, Bappi Lahiri and every music director of repute in the Indian music world (language ‘no bar’).

The first song of Hariharan’s that I heard his voice in was a quartet from “Mashaal”. That song featured Shailendra Singh, Suresh Wadkar & Anup Jalota as the other singers. The song was composed by Hridaynath Mangeshkar & written by Javed Akhtar. On screen, we see a set of unemployed youth, led by Anil Kapoor & Gulshan Grover, mouthing words that describe their life. A ‘Happy-Go-Lucky’ set who couldn’t care less about life. Their lives take a turn when an upright journalist (played by Dilip Kumar) enters their ‘basti’.
