Today’s song is from the film Taqdeer-1958. The film was made by Neelam Productions, Bombay. Produced by D. Dohna, it was directed by A.S.Arora – whose name is included as a Lyricist also, though there is no song on his name in the film, according to HFGK. he Music Director was Pt. Dhaniram. The cast of the film included Shyama, Karan Dewan, Asha Mathur (her last film), Pratima devi, Madan Puri, Tun Tun, Sheila Vaz, Helen and many others.
There were 5 films with the same title, Taqdeer, made in 1935, 1943, 1958, 1967 and 1983. The 1943 film Taqdeer was the First film of Nargis, where she was presented as the film’s Heroine.
The prominent films of 1958 were Madhumati,Chalti ka naam gaadi,Yahudi,Phir subha hogi,Sadhna,Fagun,Parvarish,kala Pani,Howrah Bridge,Dilli ka thug,Al Hilal,Aji bas shukriya,Jailor,Lala Rukh,Light House,Mausi,Mujrim, Panchayat, Post box 999,Ragini, Samrat Chandragupta,Sitaron se aagey,Sone ki Chididya,Suvarna Sundari and Zimbo.
All Major actors Raj Kapoor,Dev Anand and Dilip Kumar, Ashok Kumar, Rajendra Kumar, Kishore Kumar etc had their jubilee films in this year. Some notable films were Sadhana-which had taken inspiration from Shantaram’s film Aadmi-1939,Al Hilal- a C grade film which became immortal due to one qawali”Hamen to loot liya”, Jailor-Sohrab Modi’s remake of his own Jailor of 1938 and Yahudi- based on the Parsee costume drama of Agha Hashr Kashmiri, which was filmed in 1933 earlier. Like this one, Bimal Rai had also remade New Theatre’s ‘Devdas’-35 also in 1955. Usually remakes are not successful, but Bimal Roy’s these two films became popular, just like Mehboobs remake of ‘Aurat’-42 in ‘Mother India’-57.
Bimal Roy’s film on Rebirth or Reincarnation,’Madhumati’ Was yet another Blockbuster. Incidentally,in both films, Dilip Kumar was the lead actor. The Neo- Socialists, some with IPTA background, came with a bang with ‘Phir subah hogi”. It was based on the Russian novel Crime and Punishment By Dostoyevsky. The combination of Khayyam, Sahir, Mukesh and Raj Kapoor provided excellent meaningful lyrics and songs. Raj Khosla established himself with Dev Anand’s ‘Kala Pani’. The team of Dev, S D Burman, Rafi and Majrooh was a perfect match in music for ‘Phir subah hogi’.
Entertainers like Parvarish, Ghar sansar, Dilli ka Thug and Howrah Bridge along with the all time hilarious hit ‘Chalti ka naam gaadi’ made the year almost a carry forward to 1957 with equal vigour and variety. 1958 also marked the death of old timer Yakub. Shashi kapoor and Jeniffer got married on 2nd july this year.
Thousands of actors worked in Hindi films.According to a survey, a list of 7000 names of actors- from 1931 to 2000 – was published. Dr. Surjit Singh ji copied the list from the site (now defunct) and published it on RMIM. I copied the list on my Laptop. However, I changed my Laptop a few times and in that process this list was lost by me. Today the list is not available even in the RMIM archives.
Though so many artists worked in films, not all were important or famous nor were they all Heroes. Today I have got detailed/short Bios of more than 2000 artists with me, collated from various books of many languages, old magazines, various Blogs and sites and other sources. I have written Bios of about 1500 artists in my posts on this Blog alone. These include artists from Hindi,Bangla, Telugu, Tamil, Marathi, Gujarati and Punjabi films.
I have a plan to classify these artists as STA/MTA/LTA and VLTA. Do you know what it means ? No ? No wonder ! I did not know until I coined them myself a few weeks ago !! They mean….
| STA | Short Term Actors | Actors with around 25+ films |
| MTA | Medium Term Actors | around 50+ films |
| LTA | Long Term Actors | around 100+ films |
| VLTA | Very Long Term Actors | around 200+ films |
I have not yet started this work, as it will be a time consuming project. However, today I am making a beginning by Classifying the actress Asha Mathur as a Short Term Actor, with only 20 films.
Asha Mathur was born on 21-11-1934 in an affluent family of Delhi. One of the few educated actresses of her times, Asha Mathur (Sohan Singh in real life) studied up to B.A. Both Asha Mathur and Bina Roy were introduced by Kishore Sahu in Kali Ghata (1951). While Bina Roy was relatively more successful among the two and did some memorable movies including Anarkali (1953) and Taj Mahal (1963), Asha Mathur was relegated to obscure mythical and costume films including Alif Laila (1953), Rajyogi Bharthari (1954), Malka-E-Alam Noorjehan (1954), Amar Kirtan (1954) etc because of her lackluster performances, and wooden expressions.
Her most memorable role was in Poonam (1952), as the suffering wife of Ashok Kumar. She acted only in 20 films. Her last film was Taqdeer-58. Some of her well known films were Kali Ghata-51, Poonam-52, Dhuan-53, Alif Laila-53, Mayur Pankh-54, Naqaab-55, Lakhon mein ek-55, Amaanat-55 and Harihar Bhakti-56. She married famous director of her times Mohan Sehgal and left films.
Asha Mathur is a forgotten name today except for the few popular songs picturized on her – Humse na poocho koi pyar kya hai (Kali Ghata, 1951) and Baanki adayein dekh na ji dekh na (Amanat, 1955). She died on 13-2-2001.
Pt. Dhani Ram, MD of film Taqdeer-1958 is a less known music director. Remembering Pandit DHANIRAM (Born 1922 – Died 14 March 1967), Indian Music Director & Composer in Hindi Movies, on his Death Anniversary today.
Excerpts from his Interview that was conducted by Devdas ‘Kusum’ for Filmi Sangeet Magazine, contributed by Shri Sudarshan Talwar.
‘Classical music has suffered a huge loss because of Film music’ remarked Dhaniram, which surprised me. Till now many Music Directors had mentioned how Classical music had gained popularity by being represented in a simple way through Film music and I had expected a similar answer from him. But when he gave an opposite answer I asked ‘How come ?’
‘That is because those who are well versed with Classical music come to the Film world and die of hunger. That is why many people are least interested in Classical Music.’
Then I asked ‘What do you think is the reason for the bad state of classical musicians’.
‘As the persons with knowledge of Classical music know the basics of music very well they hardly resort to the cheap ‘copying’ of tunes from Western or other foreign tunes. They churn the Raag-Raginis to give valuable butter like unique tunes. The same is not at all possible for some & for them it is a terrible loss.’
After learning the basics from Buteh Khan, Dhaniram had made his brother Omkarnath his guru. During those days Dhaniram used to sing for Akashvani Delhi. This was around 1935. After that in 1942 he started working as Music Director for ‘Song Publicity Organization’. He became the Music Director for ‘HMV’ Lahore in 1945. It was there that he started his career by giving music in ‘Papiha Re’-1948.
During the time of partition , Dhaniram left the films ‘Kaalidas’ and ‘Mera Desh’ incomplete and went to Delhi. He started working there as a Music Director.
‘In the year 1955 (?) I went to Bombay’ as told by Dhaniram. Here he started getting one after another Films. ‘ B. R. Chopra’s ‘Sholey’, A.V.M’s ‘Ladki’, ‘Dhuan’, ‘Daak Babu’, ‘Shaahi Bazaar’, ‘Shaahi Chor’, ‘Baaje Ghungroo’ and dubbed Films like ‘Matwaala’, ‘Mahavath’, ‘Taqdeer’, ‘Aankh Ka Nashaa’ & ‘Ladki’ were some Films through which I could showcase my talent. However, only the audience can say if I have been successful in my attempts or not.’
‘Surely the audiences would give witness to your success. Just tell me now something about the audiences.’ My words were ‘Do you know what the Audience likes ?’
‘We cannot measure the likes of the Audiences. Just understand that whatever fascinates the mind becomes their favourite.’
Around 100 years ago Dhaniram was born in Secunderabad – U.P.. It was a huge surprise that he developed an interest in music. He was so lost in his passion for music that he didn’t realize how he overcame the difficulties. In 1932 when he came with his Father to Shimla he remained there only. He learnt music till 1935 from Buteh Khan. Then when he took an oath by singing and composing, he had dedicated his life to music. He has given such gems like O. P. Nayyar. Dhaniram was Nayyar’s Guru for many years. Vinod who had given music in a Punjabi Film ‘Chaman’ was also his disciple. Sabita Banerjee lent her voice for the first time under Dhaniram’s composition. It was in the Film ‘Aankh Ka Nashaa’.
Let’s hear in his own words what all he has to do to make tunes for a song. ‘First, think about the situation and then get lost in the deepness of the words in the song. I do attempt to be in synchronization with what the Lyricist has penned. When the mind gives the nod I wrap the tunes around the words.’
‘This means that you don’t give your tunes to write a song?’
‘I have not tied myself in such instances. Many times when the tunes have been created first I have given the Lyricists to write upon that. But I do believe that the Lyrics should come first and then the tune.’
Dhaniram was inspired by the Folk music of Punjab and Uttar Pradesh. He had not only learnt music of all states in India but also western music.
According to him, audiences are happy to hear new tunes and newness can only be brought by experimenting.(Credits: cineplot.com/dhaniram-profile-filmography/).
I only know that this film was a Family drama, but could not get its story. Enjoy this 67 year old song by Geeta Dutt, from this film….

Arun Ji
Thanks for the post. I admire your passion and dedication to collect information of Hindi films and people associated with those films in various capacities, curate it and present it to readers of this blog.
Todays song has a fair appeal.
Good to know about Pt Dhaniram&Asha Mathur ( I do remember her from Kalighata, Mayur Pankh, Poonam). Yes she didnt make much impact.
In good humour,in addition to STA/MTA/LTA & VLTA have ‘one film wonders’ also in the compilation 🙂

Satish ji,
Thanks for your appreciation. Most of the knowledge I have gathered is after I crossed the age of 70 years. Thanks to the readers of this Blog, who always encouraged me with their appreciation and it worked as a motivation for me to continue what I was doing.
As far as ” One film wonders” is concerned, I have written separate article on them and wrote about them 4-5- times in last 14 years.
Thanks again.
