Hullo Atuldom

Taking out 1924 from 2025 gives us 101. Is the figure correct? Does that mean today would have been the 101st birthday of Madan Mohan- the composer who gave us such gems as “Rasm-e-ulfat ko nibhaein to nibhaein kaise“, “Kar chale hum fida“, “Kaun Aaya Mere Man Ke Dwaare” and lots more. Our blog’s stats page gives the number of songs as 630 of which the blog has 577.

Madan Mohan’s music was characterised by his immense ability to blend elements of Indian classical music into a new style of Hindi filmi song. He had a keen and sensitive ear for the nuances of Indian classical tunes, and combined them with elements of Western music such as harmonies to produce a style of music that could be appreciated by both classical music aficionados and the common person alike.

I have noticed that people think of Madan Mohan with ‘Lag ja gale’ which is a gem in itself, but then the whole album of ‘Woh Kaun Thi?’ (1964) was full of gems and my personal favourites are “Naina barse rim jhim rim jhim” & “Jo hum ne daastaan apni sunayee“. (May be because of the fact that the 78 r.p.m. record that my dad used to play had these two songs). We had a collection of Kishore Kumar songs cassette with “Zaroorat hai zaroorat hai”,  “Mera Naam Abdul Rehman“, “Aai Haseeno, Naazaneeno” etc. It was much later in life I became aware that all these were compositions by Madan Mohan. All these enlightenment happened sometime in the 1990s when I started appreciating songs as a team work of the singer, composer & lyricist as well as the hordes of musicians involved in the creation of a song.

I was not aware that Kishore Kumar was not often used by Madan Mohan for his compositions but their association gave us “Yun Na Sharma Phaila De Gori Gori Baahein”, “Simti Si Sharmai Si“, “Tera mera chacha zindbad” and a few more.

This is the 50th year since the passing of Madan Mohan but songs composed by him are still alive in the minds of the film-music-listening public thanks to the reality shows that come on television where we can see many new generation contestants attempting to sing songs of the 1960s & 1970s; songs which were composed by Madan Mohan, S.D. Burman etc. “Jhumka Gira Re” from ‘Mera Saaya’ was adapted by Pritam Chakravarthy for the film ‘Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani’ in 2023. Some of his unused tunes were recreated by his son Sanjeev Kohli for Yash Chopra’s ‘Veer Zaara’ in 2004.

Films with songs composed by Madan Mohan were released till 1980- ‘Chaalbaaz’ with the Amit Kumar song ‘Hai shaam badi matwaali’ released in 1980. “Inspector Eagle” was another posthumous release.
“Inspector Eagle” made its debut on the blog with the song “Tum Kyun Aate Nahin” in 2018. This is a song sung by Asha Bhosle filmed on Bindu as a cabaret number.

Looking up about the film I found that the 3 songs were sung by Asha Bhosle and written by Kaifi Azmi. The film was produced by Laxminarayan Khanna & directed by Vishwamitter Adil. Sanjeev Kumar, Neelam Mehra, Bindu, A. K. Hangal, Ranjeet, Yunus Parvez, Paintal, Macmohan etc. were part of the cast for this film which was an action-adventure-mystery-thriller-drama film based on the life of “Indian Sherlock Holmes- A Police Inspector using his special skill to investigate mysterious crimes and murders”.

Here is today’s song ‘chalo aao jaam uthayein’.

Nalini ji,

There is an often overlooked gem in WOH KAUN THI. Of course, you know it. Shokh nazar ki bijliya… I never get tired of mentioning my fascination for the ah ah aha ha by Asha. The 3 Lata gems overshadowed this lively song.

From rais baap ke bigde hue Shehzade to rakhi brother, MM _ Lata combination was awesome.
