Mukesh and his Composers – 37
The name of SN Tripathi evokes fond memories of melody and good music amongst avid HF music lovers. He was a multitalented personality who contributed to composing, singing, acting, storytelling, direction, screenplay writing, filmmaking etc.
Despite contributions in many fields of film making, he is best known as a music director. He gave music to mainly B grade mythological and historical movies, but these movies had A grade songs for us to cherish.
There are many posts on our blog as well as articles and blogposts on the net regarding multi-talented SN Tripathi.
I found a very good article by Shri Sharad Dutt on the humble beginnings and the career of of SN Tripathi. The title of the article speaks volumes of the talent, recognition and honour that he received.
I shall skip writing on his career and his popular songs by other singers and stick to the task at hand. Well, Mukesh’s collaboration with the composer is what we will discuss in this post and here is the complete list.

*Bhojpuri film.
So, the journey starts in 1948, eight years from Mukesh’s debut in 1940. Mukesh sings two excellent solos in the film cited at S. No 1 and 2 above. Songs sung with such despair and anguish that it feels Lord Ram during his stay on earth and under the circumstances must have sung in the same tone and tenor which Mukesh has sung.
I urge the readers to listen to these two songs as they are not so popular but a class apart. The rendition is matchless and out of the world. Please read the editor’s first line in the post and my comment.
And then comes a surprise.
After this film in 1948, SN Tripathi all but forgets Mukesh for 11 long years.
When Mukesh comes back into the composing world of SN Tripathi, he again renders two ageless classics songs in Rani Roopmati (1959) and Chandramukhi (1960). These are cited at 3 and 4 above.
In fact, many would agree that when the names of the two artists are taken, then it’s always song no 3 and 13 that come to the mind in an instant. It would not be an aggregation to say that these two are amongst a few of the topmost songs created by SN Tripathi.
5 to 8 and 11 are duets with Lata Mangeshkar which are well known.
9, 10 and 17 are again solos which are good but no match to the other popular solos described above.
12, 14 and 16 are duets with Suman Kalyanpur. 15 and 18 are again duets with Asha Bhosale. All these duets are familiar and are good songs from the composing skills of SN Tripathi.
Now, in these 20 odd songs, which was the most popular?
Well, 3 and 13 would be strong contenders. I personally feel 3 remains the most popular among the masses.
4 is again a personal favourite which I never get tired of listening to the sublime rendition by Mukesh.
20 is a Bhojpuri song which Mukesh sang under the composer.
For this post, I was left with and lucky enough to prize myself with a yet to be covered song of Mukesh under the composition of SN Tripathi. In fact, the film itself is making its debut on the blog.
The film was directed by Jal and produced by Miss Sunanda A. Rai. The cast includes Ashish Kumar, Anita Guha, Shahu Modak, Sushama, Anant Marathe, Madan Puri and others.
The film was released in 1977, one year after Mukesh passed away in 1976. As such, it appears that it was a delayed film. The song itself is again pleasing to the ears and talks about the farmer. There are one or two accompanying female singers in a couple of stanzas. I request knowledge readers to identify them.
Editor’s note:- The song has a female voice as well that sounds like Vani Jairam who was the main female singer for this movie with three solo songs. So it is a Mukesh, Vani Jairam duet.
Moving on, let me try my luck with another Composer who was a similar contemporary of SN Tripathi.
Any guesses?

navprabhat kee mangal kirnen
dhartee ka mukh choomen
phoot padee kan kan se kaliyaan
maa vasundhara aa jhoome
haathon mein hal aur paanwon mein bal
haathon mein hal aur paanwon mein bal
mehnat ke pujaaree kisaan
ke dhartee maata kee ham santaan
ke dhartee maata ki ham santaan
o dhartee maata tumhen pranaam
ann kee daata tumhen pranaam
ye khet lahraate
sona hain barsaate
ye khet lahraate
sona hain barsate
pooja ke mandir hamaare
inse hai ujiyaara

jeeta hai inke sahaare

kabhee thakte na ham
chaahe aandhee ho ya toofaan

o dhartee maata tumhen pranaam
ann kee daata tumhen pranaam

Dr,
Thanks for your comment.
The footnote in MGK-II states that the record has no mention of any female singer. It further states that the female voice could that be of Usha Mangeshkar, Suman Kalyanpur or Vani Jairam.
The film has one solo each of Usha and Suman and as many as 3 solos of Vani.
So it could be the lead singer as Atul ji has brought out.
To add mystery to the riddle, I seem to hear two female voices in unison. 🙂
