The Voice of Mukesh #32
– – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –

Listening to this song, one cannot help but feel – aah, Mukesh, the voice of Gods.

When SN Tripathi created this song that was to be picturized on Trilok Kapoor, playing the role of Sri Ram, he thought of Mukesh as the playback voice for this soulful song of sadness and separation. The film is ‘Shri Rambhakt Hanuman’ from 1948. The scenario is that during the stay of Sri Ram along with Seeta and Laxman, in the forests of Panchvati, Raavan has abducted Seeta while both Sri Ram and Laxman were not present at their ‘kutiya’ (place of abode). When they return, they find their abode is deserted and there is no sign of Seeta. Fearing the worst, Sri Ram is very dejected and sad. It appears as if He has lost awareness of His own divinity, and he behaves just like an ordinary mortal.

This episode is one of the most famous and significant interludes in the saga of Sri Ram. Learned sages, and devatas were amazed to see Sri Ram, God, the Lord of everything in this universe, feel sadness and dejection like an ordinary human being. And to their utter bewilderment, He is crying, and is moving about in the forest like a creature of low intelligence, trying to talk to the birds and the tress and the animals in the forest, beseeching them for any information that they can provide on the whereabouts of His wife.

Eternal soul like Narad Muni, who is beyond the realm of life and death, he is mistaken and perplexed to see this human like behavior of his Lord. Narad Muni, who is the representation of the cosmic consciousness, and in some texts, he has been referred to as the mind of the Lord himself, even his is not left untouched by this mystifying circumstance. Devi Sati, the consort of Lord Shiva, is also taken in by this human play of the Lord. There is an episode in the Ramayan, that when Sri Ram is in this plight, Lord Shiva and Sati are also in the same forest, and they witness this behavior. Lord Shiva, folds is hands and pays his respect to his Master, his Isht Dev, accepting this episode to be a ‘Leela’ of the Lord, an interlude of make-believe that He is acting out, for the benefit of the normal humans of this earth. But His wife, Devi Sati, is baffled to see her husband, the Great Lord Shiva pay respects to this apparent mortal, who appears to be a mere ascetic in the forest. She does not realize the significance of this action of respect, and decides to go and investigate the situation herself. As history records it, it is a very heavy price she eventually has to pay, for her act of disbelief towards her own husband, Lord Shiva.

Can you believe this state of affairs? That the Lord of everything, the Omniscient, the Omnipotent, the Omnipresent Supreme Personality of this universe, is distressed at the apparent disappearance of His wife, and in His state of grief He is trying to talk with the trees and the animals in the forest. Sounds strange, yes it does, but there is a very deep meaning behind this episode, for which one will have to seriously peruse this saga and try to understand this ‘Leela’ from the learned sages.

The film ‘Shri Rambhakt Hanuman’ is a Basant Pictures presentation, and is directed by Homi Wadia. The music is by SN Tripathi, and the verses of sadness have been penned by BD Misra. Although, the first couplet is taken from the great epic ‘Ram Charitmanas’, written by Goswami Tulsidas. In the video clip, we can see Trilok Kapoor, playing the role of Sri Ram, and performing this song on screen.

In the 1970s, Mukesh recorded an abridged version of this great epic in his voice. In this song, listen to the precursor to that wonderful recording, a song rendered three decades earlier, that showed the way to later recordings of ‘Ram Charitmanas’.

mere sukh ka sansaar gayaa
jeevan ka saara saar gayaa
mere sukh ka sansaar gayaa
jeevan ka saara saar gayaa
pal bhar mein lut gayaa baseraa
pal bhar mein lut gayaa baseraa
kahaan gayi seete

tum bin soona jeevan mera

ban ban bhatkat phirat raam
ab kaise tan mein rahe praan
