Madhubala-1950, A Ranjit Movietone film, directed by Prahlad Dutt had music by Pt.Lachhiram. The cast of the film was Madhubala, Dev Anand, Jeevan, Randhir, Manju, Ram Avatar and others.

We have been taught in our school that 2=2 is 4. But in life, sometimes 2+2 is also 22 like, when a Love marriage is by the willing consent of both the families, or getting a child after 10 years of marriage or when your son stands First and wins a Gold medal in his MBBS course, it is the 2+2=22 ! Similarly when ‘Rati’ and ‘Madan’ come together, it is 2+2=22 ! In our language, when the eternal beauty Madhubala pairs with the handsome, young Dev Anand it is 2+2=22 again.

In the film Madhubala-1950, when these two were paired, no wonder people were ecstatic and crowded the cinema halls. No one bothered if the story was weak or the music was third rate. These two were enough to please them. Here, of course the story was good and the music too !

Dev Anand, till he was alive, had such a magical spell over the people of India that his looks and styles were simply loved by them. I remember, once many years ago, I was invited to a musical programme in Borivali, Mumbai. The venue was the Municipal Garden with a working stage. Old songs were sung by trained young aspiring singers and an estimated crowd of about 300-400 people of all ages were enjoying the Musical Evening. As soon as an announcement was made that a singer would sing the song “Maana janab ne pukara nahin” from Paying Guest-1957, there was a huge round of clapping and shouting from the people. When the song actually started, suddenly a man of about 70+ years climbed on the stage, upped his shirt collar and started dancing on the song beat, exactly in Dev Anand style. The audience was so excited, they not only stood up and clapped to the beat of the song, but also, after the song, the dancing old man was carried on their shoulders and was much appreciated. It was such a wonderful feeling, I never realised when I too had stood up, clapped and shouted !

Even today, such is the magic of this ever young Hero-Dev Anand on Indian people. I too was his fan till he started directing and producing awful films. Dev was highly self centred. He was very careful about his style, image, how he looked and how he dressed. His brother Vijay Anand said about him, “Dev was like a child who is engrossed in his own world.” To protect his own image, Dev even rejected many films, which others got and which made their lives. One such film was Zanjeer. He refused it because there were no songs in the film for the hero!

In this film Madhubala-50, Dev and Madhubala acted together for the second time. Their first film together was Nirala, also made in 1950, but released first. In all they acted together in 8 films. This was a record till the Dream girl Hema Malini broke it, by acting in 11 films with Dev Anand.

Though Dev ( 26-9-1923) was 10 years older than Madhubala ( 14-2-1933), he was very junior to her in the Film industry. By the time Dev Anand did his first film Hum Ek Hain-1946, Madhubala had already done 13 films. She had started as a child artist in Swastik-1939. Madhubala-50 was her 35th film and Dev’s 13th film ! From Nirala-50 to Sharabi-64, they did 8 films together. Dev Anand did 116 films and sang 303 songs on screen. Madhubala did only 79 films and sang 188 songs on screen. Her speed came down drastically, after her Heart ailment was detected while shooting in Madras and the treatment for it started. Dev of course continued steadily for a much longer period, but out of his 116 films, how many films were actually watchable is a moot question.

There is an interesting story behind this film’s making. When Madhubala was about 13-14 years old, Chandulal knew her and also liked her. He had already predicted a bright future for her. Her father Ataulla Khan was a very careless and irresponsible person. One day, when Chandulal Shah was playing cards with his friends, he got a phone call from his nephew, Ratilal Punatar, saying that Madhubala had come and she was asking for a loan of Rs. 2000, on interest, immediately. Her mother was in serious condition to deliver for the 10th time and her father was not at home. Chandulal asked Ratilal to give the money to her without interest, but to tell her that in future if Ranjit needed her, she should work for them.

In the end of 1940s, due to a heavy loss in gambling, Ranjit had seen bad days. They decided to make a film with Dev and Madhubala. Ratilal went to Ataulla Khan, but he quoted an astronomical amount. Ratilal returned. Next day Madhubala herself came to Ranjit and told them that she will work in their film and that too without any money. Those were the days, when she had become famous after the success of the film Mahal-49. But she worked in the film and Ranjit, as a mark of gratitude, named the film as Madhubala. ( the name originally was to be ‘Amar Prem’).

Incidentally, out of the 90 odd films from 1931 to 1970, which had titles like names of people-Chandu, Aarti, Balam, Naghma etc, only 2 films had titles which matched with the names of the Heroines of those films. One was Nargis-1946 and the other was Madhubala-1950, in which the Heroines were Nargis and Madhubala respectively.

The story of the film was…..

Madhubala(Madhubala) was heir to two inheritances of her father-wealth and Health- heart disease. She was leading a lonely life-her only solace being the Doctor(Randhir) who was more like a father to her. Many young people were meeting her off and on with ulterior motives and there was regular tussle between them to win her favours. Amongst them the most insistent was Kalicharan (Jeevan), the proprietor of a dramatic company.

Madhubala was passing her days trying to draw what comfort she could. Seeing her condition, the Doctor advised her to go to a village as the cool and sedate atmosphere over there would have a soothing effect on her. In the village Madhubala met Ashok ( Dev Anand). Each thought the other a bit overbearing in behaviour. But time and meetings tore down and eliminated the first bad impressions and both began to love each other ( nafrat hamare pyar ki pehli seedhi hai). They decided to marry. Preparations for marriage were going ahead. As luck would have it, Madhubala’s friends headed by Kalicharan came to the village in search of her. Gauging the state of affairs, Kalicharan decided his game. He cracked cruel jokes at Ashok’s cost. Ashok was stung to the core. He felt that Madhubala was a party to this. He broke up the preparation for the marriage.

Because of Ashok’s attitude Madhubala came to the city but with a weakened heart. She began to lose interest in life. Ashok began to relent. He came to the city and met Madhubala. But Madhubala’s cold attitude upset him. He felt as if the whole world had gone against him and he, in a frenzy, began to create havoc and nuisance in the street. He was fined for this misdemeanour. He was released as Madhubala paid the fine. Kalicharan played his cards expertly. He whispered into Ashok’s ears that Madhubala paid up the find just to spite him. He engaged him in his dramatic company in order to put an end to Ashok’s life. A burning curtain fell on Ashok’s head and he lost his eyesight.

Madhubala went to the hospital to see him but Ashok scolded her. Ashok went to his native place. Madhubala went to the village. She got herself engaged at his place under an assumed name-Sheela. Under her careful nursing Ashok’s eyes were cured. When Ashok came to know that Sheela and Madhubala were the same, he got excited. But her Doctor(Randhir) explained the position and with all the misunderstandings being removed, the lovers were united.

The Music Director of this film, LACHHIRAM, a name not known to many readers. He was a very talented but unlucky composer, who, despite his good work, was never counted among the A grade composers. LACHHIRAM TOMAR was a Punjabi Chaudhary born in the princely state of Kuthar in the present day Himachal Pradesh in 1914. His father died early and he was brought up and trained in music by Rana jagjit Chandra of Kuthar, under the tutelage of Ustad Noore Khan. He came to Delhi at the age of 20 years and served in H.M.V.Company as a singer. He cut many records there. Side by side he was singing on A.I.R. also.

Aziz Kashmiri, writer and Director of Shorey Films, Lahore came scouting for talents and engaged him as an assistant to music composer for a salary of Rs.750 per month. He assisted in films like Champa, Badnami and Shalimar. His first independent film as a composer was Aarsi-47, which celebrated Silver jubilee. Then he did Mohini, Birhan and Director in 47-48 and did Guru Dakshina and Madhubala in 1950. The songs of Madhubala became Hits, but his luck misfired. He suffered from T.B. and had to leave everything. He lost one Lung also in it. However this brave man came back and did Ameer, Shaheed Bhagat Singh-54 (Sarfaroshi ki tamanna-Rafi), Maharani Jhansi, Guru Ghantal and Hazaar pariyaan-59. In his last spell he did Do Shahzade, Razia Sultan and his Last film was Main Suhagan Hoon-64.

Lachhiram Tomar died on 5-2-1966 at Bombay. He gave music to 19 films, from Champa-1945 to Main suhagan hoon-1964.

Here is a song from this film, sung by Asha Bhosle. Enjoy….

Very interesting facts about the movie as well as the lead pair. Incidentally, it is only audio available in most of those movies of that time and hence cannot be fully cherished! Regards.
