For my next song we turn to a Lata Mangeshkar melody – “Sultana Mera Naam Hai” from Sangram (1976) which is a lively cabaret-style dance number composed by Bappi Lahiri with lyrics by Gauhar Kanpuri. It is a nightclub-oriented songs and reflects the changing musical trends of the mid-1970s, when Western rhythms and cabaret sequences had become popular in Hindi cinema.
Musically, the song combines a strong dance beat with brass instrumentation and a catchy refrain. Bappi Lahiri’s arrangement is energetic but not yet as disco-driven as the style he would become famous for a few years later. Instead, it sits somewhere between the traditional Hindi film cabaret of the 1960s and the emerging disco sound of the late 1970s.
Lata brings her own style to the number. Rather than overt sensuality, she emphasizes elegance, clarity of diction, and a slightly teasing quality. The result is a cabaret song that remains distinctly “Lata” in character.
“Sangraam” (1976) is directed by Harmesh Malhotra for producer Ratan Mohan. The film starred Shatrughan Sinha, Reena Roy, Danny, Jagdeep, Purnima, Nazeer Hussain, Bhagwan, Aruna Irani, Lalita Pawar, Ajit, Shivraj, Junior Mehmood, Shetty, Kuljeet, and many more.
Story:
The film begins with two young boys, Shankar and Saleem, who are raised together by a kind-hearted Muslim family. Saleem’s father, Shaukat Hussain, helps the police arrest the notorious smuggler Durjan Singh. Before going to prison, Durjan vows revenge against the family. After his release, he arranges an attack intended to destroy them. During the chaos, the two boys are forced to flee and become separated.
Years later, fate has taken them down very different paths. Saleem falls into the hands of Durjan, who does not realize that the young man is the son of his old enemy. Durjan renames him Altaf and trains him as a member of his criminal gang. Meanwhile, Shankar grows up on the streets and becomes a daring thief known as Sangram.
As adults, Sangram and Altaf unknowingly cross paths during a criminal operation. Impressed by each other’s courage and skills, they become friends and partners, completely unaware that they were once brothers in all but blood. Their friendship deepens while Durjan manipulates events from behind the scenes for his own gain.
The story then develops into a mix of action, crime, romance, and family drama. Sangram falls in love with Poonam, while the growing conflict between the heroes and Durjan brings hidden truths to the surface.
Eventually, the mystery of their childhood separation is revealed, and the two men discover their shared past. In the climax, Sangram and Altaf unite against Durjan and his gang. After a series of confrontations and action sequences, justice prevails, old wrongs are avenged, and the long-separated brothers are finally reunited.
The film concludes with the triumph of friendship, family bonds, and righteousness over crime and revenge.
One song from this movie is already covered on this blog. This therefore is the second song. The song is lip synced and performed by Reena Roy. On screen we can also see Shatrughna Sinha dressed as an Arab sheikh and Ajit enjoying the dance.
