‘Albela Mastaana’ (1967) was produced by Ghanshyam and was directed by B J Patel. The cast included Kishore Kumar, Asha Nadkarni, Bhagwan, Rajan Haksar, Aruna Irani, Kaveri, Kundan, Jagdish Kanwal, Poonam Kapoor, Neelima, Naina, Reshma etc.

The film’s lead actress, Asha Nadkarni (C.1943 – 29/06/2023) was born in a middle-class family in Saraswat Colony at Pune. The family of Asha Nadkarni shifted to Mumbai in 1957. She was a trained dancer. She begged her first role in Rajkamal Kalamandir’s ‘Mausi’ (1958) for which V Shantaram gave her the screen name of Vandana. She continued with the same screen name in ‘Navrang’ (1959) in which she was a court dancer and the song aa dil se dil mila le was picturised on her. She also acted in ‘Stree’ (1961) with the same screen name.

Once she came out of Rajkamal, she acted in subsequent films with her real name, Asha Nadkarni. During her filmy career which ended in 1975, she worked in many Hindi and Marathi films. Some of the Hindi films she worked included ‘Grahasti’ (1963), ‘Albela Mastaana; (1967), ‘Dil Aur Mohabbat; (1968), ‘Chiraag’ (1969), ‘Begunaah’ (1970), ‘Ustaad Pedro’ (1972), ‘Maan Jaayiye’ (1972) and ‘Ye Sachh Hai’ (1975).

Asha Nadkarni passed away on June 29, 2023, at the age of 80 due to kidney ailments. At the time of her death, she was staying with her son and daughter-in-law in Malabar Hill in South Mumbai.

The quality of VCD of the film available on video sharing platform is not good. The story of the film appeared disjointed specially towards the end probably due to the damaged parts of the film which mayve been edited out in the VCD. The comedy scenes of the film are immature. The story of the film in some detail is given below:.

Dayal Verma (Kishore Kumar), the only son of Verma (S K Prem), the owner of a steel mill, has been consistently causing troubles and anguish for his father due to his frequent romantic affairs. The things become serious when Verma himself gets involved in the murder of a girl which was a fake murder stage on behalf of Sunderji (Rajan Haksar) to blackmail him and eventually grab his mill. During one of his sojourns with a group of girls in his house, Dayal finds a girl called Lily (Asha Nadkarni) still remaining in his house. She says that she has come to deliver the sofa for Verma and to collect Rs.25000/-. Dayal gets an impression that she is a cheater and tries to push her out of the house when his father returns and after reading the note, pays her the money. So, Sunderji’s blackmailing tactics is successful. Sunderji has invented a formula which makes a person invisible partly or fully. Also, he has been forcing Lily (Asha Nadkarni) to carry out the blackmailing assignments with her father being held captive. Dayal is not happy with his father parting with money. He follows Lily in her office and confronts with her that she has cheated for just showing the photograph of the sofa. Lily is unable to explain her precarious position and advise him to leave as early as possible otherwise his life will be in danger. Soon Sunderji’s henchmen enter the office and confine Dayal inside a room. Somehow, Dayal manages to escape disguising himself and returns home. His father advises him to forget about the money and reveals that he was falsely framed for a murder of a girl. Dayal promises his father that he would investigate in detail about the gang of blackmailer as well as their modus operandi of blackmailing operations. In the meanwhile, Sunderji, who also owns a theatre company in which Narayan (Bhagwan), a popular actor of his theatre, develop differences because of which Narayan leaves his theatre. Narayan has become familiar with Dayal while the latter was confronting Lily. Concidentally, he often come across Dayal and at that time, they both find themselves in big problems from Sunderji. During the course of his investigation, Dayal accidentally meets Mala (??), his rich ex-girlfriend to whom he had falsely promised to marry her. Her uncle, Badri Prasad (Jagdish Kanwal) who has an eye on the wealth of Mala wants Dayal to get married to Mala and he employs Narayan to convince Dayal to marry Mala and to sign a legal document to transfer all the wealth of Mala to him. Dayal refuses and Badri Prasad puts him and Narayan confined to a room until Dayal agrees to sign the legal document. Mala helps him and Narayan to escape from her house. After a couple of confrontations and now knowing that Lily has been forced to do blackmailing assignments, Dayal has fallen in love with Lily. Now he has to expose Sunderji to save his father and get Lily and her father released from the clutches of Sunderji. It is time for Sunderji to demand Rs.50000/- from Verma and on this occasion, he decides to join Lily but by becoming completely invisible. At first, Verma refuses to give the money but the invisible Sunderji forces him to part with the money. With this incidence, Dayal joins hands with Narayan and with their unusual and comical styles, foil all the plans of business of blackmailing by getting the bottles of Sunderji’s formula of becoming invisible. With this, Dayal gets Lily and her father released and traces the ‘murdered girl’ who is alive to prove the innocence of his father. In the end, the invisible Dayal and Narayan create so much confusion among Sunderji’s henchmen that they start fighting each other. Sunderji tries to escape with his acquired wealth but he is confronted by Dayal and Narayan. A police team reach in time to arrest Sunderji. Dayal and Lily is united.

As I have stated earlier, the last part of the film in VCD is not only in bad quality but also many scenes appear disjointed. For example, in the film, Aruna Irani is in the role of Bahar who is a part of smuggling syndicate run by Nakhuda (Kundan). But she never appears in the VCD of the film though her name is uttered in the film a couple of times. It is also not clear as to what happens to Mala (??) who is in love with Dayal (Kishore Kumar). But in the end, Dayal is seen walking with Lily (Asha Nadkarni).

The film had eight songs written by Prem Dhawan which were set to music by N Datta. Two songs have been covered on the Blog. I present the 3rd song, ‘tum bhee akele ho’ rendered by Asha Bhosle which is picturised on an actress whom I am unable to identify though she is in the role of Mala. Kishore Kumar is present during her song as a disinterested person.

The background to the song is that Mala (??) is a rich ex-girlfriend of Dayal (Kishore Kumar). She still loves him and wants to marry him. But Dayal is not interested in marrying her. One night, she tries to woo him by singing the song under discussion outside his bungalow. Dayal comes out of his bungalow and sees her. During the song sequences, Dayal shows his disinterest in her. At the end of the song, Mala fakes as if she is not well. Dayal holds her closely when his father sees him with a girl and reprimands him for flirting with a girl.

Is she Kaveri?(Based on pure guess work & credits)

My guess was also the same, But in this film, the actress in the role of Mala has a major presence whereas Kaveri has been seen doing only bit roles in her other films, One thing I am now sure that the actress in the role of Mala in the film under discussionis is the same actress at 1:23:15 in ‘Aakhri Khat’ (1966).

credits of aakhri khat mentions Kaveri ‘s name, then for sure, she is Kaveri
