Blog Day :

6428 Post No. : 19952

This is my 1800th post here !
Oh, my God !! It is simply unbelievable !!!

I started writing posts here from 1-10-2012 and in almost 13.5 years’ time, I wrote 1800 posts here. Add to it another 100 odd posts elsewhere, on different aspects of Hindi, Marathi, Telugu and Kannada films and I start thinking if I am really the same person ?

After quitting my Pharma work totally as a career (retirement in 1998, as a General Manager-Marketing and then as a Consultant upto 2008), I turned to my favourite subject – Old films and songs, starting only as a commentator on articles of other writers initially. I was initiated into writing posts by ATUL JI. So, whatever my achievements in this field are, the credit goes to ATUL JI, for his help, encouragement and for providing opportunity. Thank you, ATUL JI !

My last Century was completed on 13-10-2025 in 138 days. Today’s Century comes in 134 days. My first book was published in 2018 and the 13th book came early in this month-February 2026.

I sincerely also thank Sudhir ji, Raja ji, Sadanand ji and all other ATULITES and readers for appreciating, helping and encouraging me from time to time in my work here.

Very soon I will be completing 86 years and enter 87th year of my life. God has been very kind in providing enough energy to me to lead a busy life, so far. However, age is after all age and I will have to go slow now – if not stop completely. Let us see.

Once again thanks to all friends in our group, and my family.

Now coming to today’s film Raaj Tilak-1958. It was a Gemini Pictures, Madras film, produced and directed by S.S.Vasan. The cast of the film was Vaijayanti mala, Padmini, Gemini Ganesan, Pran, Jahagirdar, Bipin Gupta, Lalita Pawar, Durga Khote, Manmohan krishna, Agha, Shammi and others.

‘Raaj Tilak’ (1958) was simultaneously shot in Hindi along with ‘Vanjikottai Valiban’ (1958) in Tamil. Both the films were produced and directed by S S Vasan under the banner of Gemini Pictures. Gemini Ganesan, Vyjayantimala and Padmini were the common artists for both Hindi and Tamil films. Jagirdar, Bipin Gupta, Lalita Pawar, Durga Khote, Pran, Manmohan Krishna, Agha, Shammi, Meenakshi etc worked only in the Hindi version of the film. C Ramchandra composed the songs for both Tamil and Hindi films. The film was inspired from the novel, ‘The Count of Monte Cristo’ (1844) by Alexandre Dumas. The screenplay of the story was written by Ramanand Sagar.

Just as director, S S Vasan had done some sort of a casting coup by making Dilip Kumar and Dev Anand to act together in ‘Insaaniyat’ (1955), he made a similar type of a casting coup by making Padmini and Vyjayantimala to act together in ‘Raj Tilak’/Vanjikottai Valiban despite their perceived professional rivalry as classical dancers. The film was a costume drama.

The film Raj Tilak-58 was a remake of the Hit Tamil film, “Vanjikkottai Valiban”or ‘The youth from Vanji Fort’. This film was also remade in Telugu as “Vijay Kota Veerudu”. The remarkable thing was that C. Ramchandra was the Music Director of all the versions-Hindi, Tamil and Telugu. The lead actors, namely Gemini Ganesan, Padmini and Vyjayanti Mala acted in all the three versions. S.S.Vasan of Gemini was very fond of making multi language films. It started with ‘Chandralekha’-48, which was made in Tamil and Hindi. After that film became an All India Hit film, there were more films made in Tamil, Telugu and Hindi. Films like Nishan-49, Mangala-50, Bahar-51, Mr.Sampat-52, Miss mary-57, Asha-57 and many more were made. The trend slowed down in later years, but continues till today.

S.S.Vasan of Gemini was known in the film Industry as India’s Cecil B.Demille, due to his penchant for doing things on a grand scale in his films. Expensive sets, Exquisitely choreographed dances ( Bombay’s Hiralal was the Choreographer for Tamil, Telugu and Hindi versions), fast paced narration, pleasing visuals and period costumes were used extensively in all the three versions of this movie. The story of the film was based on the Alexandre Dumas’ Novel, “The count of Monte Cristo” ( 1844), with Indian adaptations, of course.

The highlight of this film was the Dance Contest between Padmini and Vyjayanti Mala. Both were experts in Bharat Natyam dancing. Both the actresses were at the Zenith of their careers and professional rivalry existed between them. Their Real life envy came into the Reel life contest too ! This dance shooting took almost 10 days, due to the demands of both actresses to get a better portion of screen space. Vasan himself supervised the editing of this song and ensured that no room for complaint was left in the final scene. Same scene from the Tamil film was used in Telugu and Hindi versions to rule out room for any controversy. This Dance contest became a Milestone in south films.

In the desire to have impressive scenes, Back Projection was used. This means, some scenes from his own film Chandralekha-48 were used in this film.As a result, one could see Ranjan riding a Horse in one of the scenes. Similarly, a passing Motorcar is also seen in this scene.( Even in the Hollywood film Ben Hur-59, one could see a Red car passing by, during the famous Chariot race. This clip is available on You Tube).

In the Tamil version, at the beginning of the Dance contest, the villain-P.S.Veerappa-says, ‘ Shabash, Sariyama potti ‘ ( Bravo,an excellent contest). In the Hindi version, the villain-Pran- says,’ Shabash, Ab maza aayega’. After the release of the film in Madras, the Villains remark became very famous and was used by people for many years !

C.Ramchandra was the Music Director of this film. For him, this was possibly the last big banner film from the South. As such, the year 1958 was the worst year in his life, both professionally and in personal life as well.

All these years he had been a respected and popular composer with most south filmmakers. With him, they used to get one of the best song writers, Rajendra krishna and the undisputed queen of playback- Lata Mangeshkar, without any problem. Rajendra krishna worked for C.Ramchandra for a long time, since 1947and wrote songs for most of the popular and hit films like Shehnai-47, Patanga-49, Nazare-49, Samadhi-50, Khazana-51, Albela-51, Hangama-52, Shagufa-53, Jhanjar -53, Anarkali-53, Insaniyat-55, Azaad-55 etc. In 1957, Rajendra Krishna wrote songs for AVM’s film Bhabhi. The songs became popular and the film was a great Hit.

S.S.Vasan did not like this. He was upset that a Lyricist from his camp worked for AVM. He decided that he will never take Rajendra Krishna for his films hereafter. When he planned the Hindi film Raaj Tilak in 1958, he informed C. Ramchandra not to bring Rajendra Krishna with him. C.Ramchandra suggested the name of Santoshi, which was accepted by Vasan. When Rajendra Krishna learnt that C.Ramchandra had taken Santoshi as his Lyricist to Madras, he was furious thinking that C Ramchandra had ditched him and he decided to leave C Ramchandra hereafter. Not only this, he started suggesting the names of Ravi, and Chitragupta to Madras filmmakers. C Ramchandra stopped getting films from the south and fell out of favor. Professionally, this was a great setback to him in 1958, losing a friend like Rajendra Krishna, due to a misunderstanding.

At personal level, his relations with his ‘friend’, Lata Mangeshkar soured and she decided never to sing for him after Raaj Tilak. Even for this film, she sang only 2 songs and refused a duet with him, citing prior commitments with other MDs. That duet was sung by Usha Mangeshkar and C.Ramchandra. Thus the year 1958 rang the death knell for C Ramchandra’s career and he slipped downwards, getting only a few small budget films.

The story of the film was….

The loyal Diwan of the kingdom accuses the Senapathi to have planned the killing of the young prince. The king ,as a punishment, banishes him to another country, but Senapati hides in the kingdom itself. One day he kills the king and becomes the ruler. Before dying, the king asks his loyal Diwan to save the prince and the princess. Diwan takes them and runs away, leaving his own wife and children.

Senapati captures Diwan’s wife, keeps her in prison on an island and leaves his son and daughter in the flowing river. Some kind person saves the children and they grow up as Chander ( G.Ganesan) and sister Gowri ( Vijaya kumari). Senapati comes to know about them and abducts Gowri and arrests Chander and keeps him in a prison on the same island as his mother. Gowri dies while attempting to run away.

Chander meets his mother and learns everything. He vows to kill the Senapathi. He tries to escape from the island with his mother, but mother dies on the way and Chander is thrown into the raging sea. He survives and reaches Ratna island. The Rajkumari Mandakini of Ratna island loves him. He narrates everything to her and she allows him to go to his kingdom to kill Senapathi. He comes to the kingdom where he meets his father and also princes Padma who loves him. Meanwhile Mandakini also reaches the kingdom. Padma and Mandakini meet and Padma allows them their love, sacrificing her love.

However during the final battle, in an attempt to save Chander, Mandakini dies. Senapathi is killed and peace returns to the kingdom. Padma and Chandar marry and he gets the Raj Tilak !

Here is a song from Raaj Tilak-1958, sung by Usha Mangeshkar,C.Ramchandra and Manna Dey. Enjoy….
