‘Baaghi’ (1964) was produced by R L Suri under the banner of Mukul Movies and was directed by Ram Dayal. The star cast included Pradeep Kumar and Leela Naidu in the lead role supported by Mumtaz, Veena, Jayant, Hiralal, Jeevan, Vijaya Chowdhary, Jagdeep, Helen, Madhumati, Mridula, Ulhas, Naaz, Rajan Haksar etc. This was Ram Dayal’s first film as director though he had been producing films under his banner, Mukul Pictures/Movies/Enterprises.

Producer-Director-Cinematographer, Ram Dayal was born in Lahore. His father, Dewan Sardarilal (Sabharwal) was the General Manager of Pancholi Pictures and Studios in Lahore. Ram Dayal started working in the Camera and Electric Department of Pancholi Studios. In 1947, Dewan Saradrilal floated his own film production company in Lahore called Dewan Pictures and produced his first film, ‘Barsaat Ki Ek Raat’ (1948) with Pran and Asha Posley in lead roles. After partition, Dewan Sardarilal and his family remained in Lahore and produced Pakistan’s first released film, ‘Teri Yaad’ (1948) with Nasir Khan and Asha Posley for which Ram Dayal was the Production Chief.

In 1950, Ram Dayal migrated to Bombay (Mumbai) where his brother, Darshan (producer-director, Suneel and Dharmesh Darshan’s father) was working as PRO in the Hindi film industry who later turned producer with films like ‘Gul Bahaar; (1954), ‘Son Of Alibaba’ (1955) and many more. In 1956, Ram Dayal’s parents migrated to India. Initially, Ram Dayal worked in Famous Studio and Kardar Studio because of his experience in working with Pancholi studios in Lahore. In his later life, Ram Dayal was associated with IMPPA, Film Producers Guild and All India Film Producers Council. He passed away on 29/01/2007. [Note: Ram Dayal’s early life is based on Rajendra’s Nigam’s Blog on Ram Dayal].

I had covered the film’s story in detail while discussing the song, aap maujood yahaan phir hamen hosh kahaan from the film. Hence, I give below the condensed version of the film’s story:

A boy is crushed under the wheel of Vazir-e-Azam, Jaffer’s (Jayant) chariot. Jaffer reaches his palace where King Ali Jaan’s (Hiralal’s) Begum, who is Jaffer’s sister, is on the death bed. She wants a promise from Jaffer that her daughter, Firdosh will get married to his son, Akram. He promises her to get them married when they grow up. However, before she dies, she wants to see Akram, whom she has not seen for a long time. Jaffer goes to bring Akram from his room and is shocked to find him missing from the bed. Apparently, his son is abducted by the father of the child crushed to death to teach Jaffer a lesson. To fulfil his sister’s wish, Jaffer takes Yusuf, the son of his Orderly (Rajan Haksar) to show to his sister as Akram. But before he takes him to his sister, she dies. Jaffer adopts Yusuf as Akram and sends him far away to his grandmother’s house.

The abducted Akram grows up under Aayesha (Veena) and her husband, Abba Jaan (Ulhas) as Habib (Pradeep Kumar). Now he is leading a group of baaghi (rebels) to fight against the cruel rule of Vazir-e-Azam Jaffer. Habib takes his group and marches to the palace of Jaffer. In a surprise attack, Habib and his men abducts Princess Firdosh (Leela Naidu) to their secret den. Habib releases Firdosh only after one of his rebel friends is released from Jaffer’s custody. However, Habib sends Shabnam (Mumtaz) along with Firdosh who appoints her as Assistant in the palace. Firdosh is unaware that she is a member of the rebel group who was sent to do spying work for Habib.

After 20 years, Yusuf/Akram will be coming to the palace via waadi-e-gul (valley of flowers) for getting married to Firdosh as per promise. Shabnam sends a secret message to Habib about this event. When Habib is reading the message, Abba Jaan, who had abducted Akram/Habib in his childhood is surprised because the real Akram is none other than Habib. He sees the marriage as a ploy to get control of the kingdom. He orders Habib to intercept Yusuf/Akram at waadi-e-gul and take his place by disguising himself as Akram since neither Jaffer nor King Ali Jaan have seen him for the last 20 years. Habib reaches the palace impersonating Yusuf/Akram and meets Jaffer.

Jaffer takes Akram/Habib to King Ali Jaan when Princess Firdosh and Shabnam join them. Even though Firdosh has recognised Habib, she keeps quiet as she is already in love with him. The betrothal ceremony of Firdosh and Habib/Akram is completed after which a dance programme is in progress when Yusuf/Akram turns up and Habib’s impersonation is exposed. There is a fierce sword fight between Habib and the palace guards. Somehow, Firdosh gets Habib hidden in her chamber through which he escapes from the palace. Later, Habib/Akram is arrested. Aayesha reaches the royal palace pleading for pardon for Habib/Akram. She reveals that Habib is Vazir-e-Azam, Jaffer’s son Akram who was abducted by her husband as revenge for killing his child under Jaffer’s chariot.

After getting fully convinced, Jaffer is repentant and orders Habib and Firdosh to be released, But Yusuf does not like their release. He kills Jaffer and absconds with Firdosh in his chariot. On the way, he is stopped by Shabnam who also gets killed under his chariot. In the meantime, the rebel forces in thousands have entered the royal palace. They set free Habib/Akram who swiftly followed in his horse the route taken by Yusuf. They meet and fight at the table top during which Yusuf falls to death in the deep valley. Akram and Firdosh are united with King Ali Jaan, and Aayesha. Even though Jaffer is not alive, the promise to his late sister is fulfilled.

The film had six songs written by Hasrat Jaipuri which were set to music by Chitragupt. Four songs have been covered on the Blog. I present the 5th song, ‘eid kee raat pyaar laayee hai’ rendered by Asha Bhosle and Lata Mangeshkar. This is one of ‘dual mood’ duet songs in Hindi films where two characters on their different locations sing the song with two different moods – happy and sad. In this song, Asha Bhosle sings for Helen in joyous mood while Lata Mangeshkar sings for Leela Naidu in a poignant mood. Incidentally, the first duet song of Lata Mangeshkar and Asha Bhosle was ye ruki ruki hawaayen from the film, ‘Daaman’ (1951) which was also a ‘dual mood’ song.

The context of the song is that Habib (Pradeep Kumar) gets arrested in the royal palace by Yusuf while he with the connnivance of princess Firdosh (Leela Naidu) was to loot the ammunition from the royal palace for his rebel group. He is to be executed after Eid celebrations. Habib suspects that princess Firdosh has double-crossed him which is not true. While Yusuf celebrates the occasion with a dance by Helen, Princess Firdosh is in a poignant mood as her fiancé, Habib is in prison on the joyous occasion of Eid. The quality of video clip is not so good. Also, in some places synchronisation in lipsyncing is defective.

Incidentally, the record version of the song contains Asha Bhosle solo in which the stanzas rendered by Lata Mangeshkar have been omitted.

eid kee raat pyaar laayee hai
eid kee raat pyaar laayee hai
ho mubaarak bahaar aayee hai

hamne ro kar khushee manaayee hai

pyaas dil kee zaraa bujhaa loon main
aaj dil ne muraad paayee hai
aaj dil ne muraad paayee hai
ho mubaarak bahaar aayee hai
eid kee raat pyaar laayee hai

chaand chhup jaa ke meraa chaand naheen
wo ghataaon mein ghir gaya hai kaheen
chaand chhup jaa ke meraa chaand naheen
wo ghataaon mein ghir gayaa hai kaheen
dil pe badlee ghamon kee chhaayee hai
hamne ro kar khushee manaayee hai
eid gham kaa payaam laayee hai

pee lo pee lo
nazar se pee lo tum
pee lo pee lo
nazar se pee lo tum
meree baahon mein rah ke jee lo tum
aaj taqdeer muskuraayee hai
aaj taqdeer muskuraayee hai
ho mubaarak bahaar aayee hai
eid kee raat pyaar laayee hai
