#the Decade of Sixties – 1961 – 1970 #
————————————————————————
(Lyricist Kavi Pradeep-62)
—————————–

Today’s Kavi Pradeep song is from the movie ‘Harishchandra Taramati-1963’. This movie had made its debut on the blog more than seventeen years ago on 10.02.2009. The first song from this movie to appear on the blog was a prayer song where in the kid (Master Babloo) in the movie is praying to God. This song is a nice-cute-heart touching song and poignant song as well, in the voice of Lata Mangeshkar. The song is ‘main ek nanhaa saa main ek chhotaa saa bachchaa hoon’.

After this first song, five more songs have been added to the tally of this movie making the total to six songs posted so far. Today’s song is the final song from this movie and with this song all the songs for this movie get covered on the blog.

“Harishchandra Taramati-1963” , a mythological movie was directed by B.K. Adarsh for ‘Adarshlok, Bombay’. It had Prithviraj Kapoor, Jaimala, B.M. Vyas, Tiwari, P. Kailash, Naazi, Helen, Ulhas, Babu Raje, Nasreen, Saraswati, child artiste Babloo and others. Story of this movie was written by Pandit Madhur and Vishwanath Pandey and screenplay was written by Naval Mathur. Dialogue writing was done by Adarsh himself. The editing of this movie was done by I.M. Kunnu.

There is one more movie with this same title released in the year 1970 and before that there is a movie with the title ‘Raja Harishchandra’ released in the year ‘1952’.

While presenting the songs from the movie ‘Raja Harishchandra-1952’ our in-house encylopeadia Shree Arunkumar jee had mentioned about the mythological story of Harishchandra and Taramati in detail. I am reproducing the text from his post here below as all the posts for the today’s movie of ‘1963’, posted so far, didn’t mention this story. This will also add the background to the context in which the today’s song happens in the movie.

Truth alone shall succeed in the end. For, Truth alone can keep the world stable. From times immemorial, torch-bearers of Truth have blazed the trail of human progress. Such one was, Harishchandra, the King of Ayodhya. . Child Harishchandra flowered into a handsome youth on the bough of royal luxury. The young heart fell for Princess Taramati of Mithila. Every full moon saw the young hunter Harishchandra making his way to the forest to meet his love, Taramati.

On one such occasion, the lovers lost their track in the darkness of the heavy bursting clouds and wandered to the ashram of a blind Brahmin sage Sachchidanand, who gave them shelter for the night. Next morning came the time to take leave; but Harishchandra could not feel like leaving the ashram until he knew his future from the lips Sachchidanand, the miracle of whose astrological powers, he was fortunate to see. Sachchidanand tried to dissuade Harishchandra from his thought but Harishchandra insisted upon knowing his future. Helpless Sachchidanand had to foretell what lay in store in the future of Harishchandra. . “The married life of Harishchandra and Taramati shall be a hard one”. What a rude shock to the great lovers.
Harishchandra did his utmost persuade Taramati away from her decision of marrying him. But how could Taramati be happy without Harishchandra So Harishchandra and Taramati were married. The father of Harishchandra refused to believe in the words of Sachchidanand and put him behind the bars. . Destiny has its way with human beings. In spite of everything, Harishchandra could not find peace with himself. The shadows of the coming events made him restless. The words of Sachchidanand started taking shape. This development was too much for the old father of Harishchandra to bear. He broke down under its weight and died a miserable man.
This completely unnerved Harishchandra and took him to the feet of Sachchidanand seeking his advice in saving himself and his family from ruination. . Sachchidanand impressed upon him the greatness of Honesty and Karma, and asked him to practice Truth.
When Harishchandra accepted and started practicing the doctrine of Truth, Indra, the King of Gods, was greatly shocked. For, a mere human being like Harishchandra had started on his path to Godliness by practising Truth and might one day unseat the Gods! . Sensing this great danger, Vishwamitra decided to put Harishchandra on severe trials, with a view of forcing him to commit breaches in his practice of Truth. He thought of the most ruthless snares to catch Harishchandra unawares. Next day he went to the king and asked him to donate his entire kingdom, which king had promised him in the sage’s dream. Satyavadi Harishchandra donates the kingdom, sells his wife and son to a Brahman and self to a guard of Shamshan, in order to collect Dakshina amount.
After few days, his son dies of snake bite, but there is no money to pay tax for cremation. Taramati sells her Mangalsutra and pays to Harishchandra, the Smashan Guard to cremate their son. Seeing all this, the Gods descend and make his son alive, return all his kingdom and give the family a place in Heaven. Thus, Truth alone triumphs!!!”

Geet Kosh mentions eight songs for this movie (including one three part song). Kavi Pradeep wrote all songs for this movie. And Music for this movie was composed by Laxmikant-Pyarelal. “Harishchandra Taramati-1963”is the only movie where lyricist Kavi Pradeep and composers Laxmikant-Pyarelal collaborated together. This was Laxmikant-Pyarelal’s second movie, as music composers, after the movie ‘Paarasmani-1963’.

In one of the posts with a song from this movie Shree Atul jee has mentioned about this movie and its music directors as follows.

“It was a C grade movie destined to be forgotten, but for the fact that the makers of this movie had signed up two whizkids as the music directors. Laxmikant Pyarelal, the musical whiz kid composed fantastic music and the movie became better known than it really deserved.”

The playback signers for this movie are Lata Mangeshkar, Hemant Kumar, Kavi Pradeep, Mohd Rafi, Asha Bhonsle, Usha Mangeshkar and Mahendra Kapoor. (However the titles of the movie (in the available online version of the movie) didn’t mention the names of Asha Bhonsle, Usha Mangeshkar and Mahendra Kapoor).

Here is the details of the songs posted earlier from ‘Harishchandra Taramati-1963’on this blog;

As mentioned above today’s song is the final song from this movie “Harishchandra Taramati-1963” on this blog. In the movie, it so happens that Taaraamatee sends her son to bring flowers for ‘poojaa’. In the garden where the child is plucking flowers a snake bites him and he falls down on the ground. Somebody informs Taaraamatee about her son. However the landlady where Taaraamatee is working as a domestic helps prevents here from going out. But the kind landlord intervenes and scolded his wife and allows Taaraamatee to go to see her son. Taaraamatee reaches to her son but after the last conversation with his mother the child dies in her arms. While carrying her child for cremation and final rituals Taaraamatee sings this sad and poignant song.

Kavi Pradeep is the lyricist for this song, sung by Lata Mangeshkar and picturised on Jaimala and Master Babloo in the movie. Music is composed by Laxmikant-Pyarelal.

With this song ‘Harishchandra Taaraamatee-1963’ gets Yippeeee’ed on this blog.

Lyrics

main teree abhaagan maa hoon
main teree abhaagan maa hoon
ye bandhan tod ke na ja
o jaane waale bete
mujhe chhod ke na ja
main teree abhaagan maa hoon
ye bandhan tod ke na ja
o jaane waale bete
mujhe chhod ke na ja aa
o jaane waale bete
mujhe chhod ke na ja

chhod kar jag ka mela aa
chal diya tu akela
chhod kar jag ka mela aa
chal diya tu akela
ye toone kya kiya re
ye kaisa khel khela aa
ye kaisa khel khela
main jee na sakoongee tere bina
munh mod ke na ja
o jaane waale bete
mujhe chhod ke na ja aa
o jaane waale bete
mujhe chhod ke na ja

jabse tu mujhse roothha aa
mera har sapna toota
jabse tu mujhse roothha aa
mera har sapna toota
mujhe ab lag raha hai
saara sansaar jhoothha
saara sansaar jhoothha
mere jeevan bhar ke punyon kee gaagar phod ke na ja
o jaane waale bete
mujhe chhod ke na ja aa
o jaane waale bete
mujhe chhod ke na ja

aa aa aa
aa aa aa aa

ro rahee hain dishaayen aen
ro rahee hain hawaayen
ro rahee hain dishaayen aen
ro rahee hain hawaayen
aaj us paar na jaa
jal rahee hain chitaayen
jal rahee hain chitaayen
o phool se bachche
aag ke andar daud ke na ja
o jaane waale bete
mujhe chhod ke na ja aa
o jaane waale bete
