Continuing the series on actresses whose names start with A and who have lip-synched to Asha Bhosle’s songs, we come today to Aarti Gupta. I think she was more famous for her modelling career in the 1980s than for her acting career, although she was quite well known in the horror genre, particularly for her appearances in the Ramsay Brothers’ Samri series.
The Samri series began with Purana Mandir (1984). The character Samri became such a hit with horror fans that he was revived, even though he had been eliminated in the climax of the original film. I am not a big fan of the horror genre, particularly the bloodthirsty variety that tends to dominate the scene.
Aarti Gupta made her acting debut with Purana Mandir (1984). Cast opposite her as the hero was Mohnish Bahl, the son of film actress Nutan. He had debuted a year earlier, in 1983, in a supporting role in Bekaraar (1983). His first film as a leading man was Tere Baahon Mein (1984), opposite Ayesha Dutt, who would later become Mrs. Jackie Shroff. Tere Baahon Mein was a desi adaptation of The Blue Lagoon (1980). While Tere Baahon Mein sank without a trace, Purana Mandir became a hit. However, it is rare for heroes of horror films to go on to become major stars. Nutan, it seems, was not at all happy with her son acting in a horror film that carried an adult certificate, although her own second film was also a kind of horror film with an ‘A’ certificate. By the end of the 1980s, Mohnish Bahl had been almost completely written off until he made a comeback as a villain in Maine Pyar Kiya (1989). Since then, he has appeared in numerous films, not always in leading roles but certainly enough to sustain a successful acting career.
Aarti Gupta’s acting career was largely confined to the 1980s. Realising that her acting career was not progressing at the pace or reaching the quality she had envisioned for herself, she made the wise move into production. We all know and love the “Mile Sur Mera Tumhara” campaign, which became immensely popular on Doordarshan in 1988. Aarti Gupta was an associate producer of it. She also produced its sequels and several other patriotic campaigns. In addition, she has been actively involved in public advocacy, conservation, and charitable work.
Purana Mandir is a film from the Ramsay stable. The Ramsay Brothers built their careers in the 1970s and 1980s by specialising in horror films. Purana Mandir is typical of the genre, containing all the elements needed to attract audiences. There is an old palace cursed by a supernatural entity that had been laid to rest years ago but has now been disturbed and awakened. It proceeds to wreak havoc on everyone connected to it. The hero, with the help of a few others, eventually confronts and destroys the menace. However, the destruction is carried out in such a way that a sequel can easily bring the creature back to life.
The song featured today is a multi-version number. According to Wikipedia, there is a female version and a male version, sung by Asha Bhosle and Ajit Singh respectively, and allegedly a duet version as well. I could not find the duet version, except for what appeared to be a fan-made edit. The song has a distinctly Western-style composition, with violins, guitar, and piano dominating the score, while the synthesizer is also clearly audible. It is truly a hidden gem.
The composer is Ajit Singh. In some sources, Amit Khanna has been credited as the music director. However, on the album cover, Ajit Singh is credited as the music director and Amit Khanna as the lyricist. The male version is picturised on Mohnish Bahl, while the female version is picturised on Aarti Gupta, who, after her marriage, came to be known as Aarti Gupta Surendranath. With this song the movie Purana Mandir (1984) makes its debut on this blog.
In the video of the female version, we see Binny Rai attempting to seduce Mohnish Bahl. He spurns all her advances, even going so far as to throw away the drink she offers him — surreptitiously, yet clearly enough for the audience to notice. One wonders whether he ever stopped to think about who would clean up the mess afterwards! If such a thing happened in my flat, I would not even know where to dispose of a perfectly good drink. Perhaps a potted plant might be an option, but I would not want to kill it. In any case, this is hardly the place to dwell on such practical concerns. So here are the lyrics and enjoy the song.
With this song, Purana Mandir (1984) makes its debut on this blog and maybe also Aarti Gupta.
