Hullo Atuldom

“Bansi Birju” (1972) was produced & directed by Prakash Verma; according to sites on the internet he was associated with two other films Dev Anand’s ‘Lootmaar’ as writer & ‘I Love You’ as director in 1985 (must say I have not heard of the second film which had Rajan Sippy & Sahila Chadda in the cast).

“Bansi Birju” had music by flutist, composer, choreographer, musicologist, poet & writer Vijay Raghav Rao. He had worked in ‘Bhuvan Shome’ (1969) & ‘Gandhi’ (1982). The lyricist for “Bansi Birju” was Yogesh Gaud for songs in the voices of Vani Jayaram, Mohd Rafi, Manna Dey, and Chitra Dutta. A little googling gave me the answer that Chitra Dutta was born as Chitra Shome but is known worldwide as Chitra Singh the better half of ghazal singer Jagjit Singh.

Today’s song is from a Comedy cum Suspense cum Love story cum identical double role film Dhandora-1941.

Dhandora is a typical North Indian Hindi word, with which not many other state people may be aware of. Since there is an almost similar word with the same meaning, in Marathi, I knew about this word and so, maybe many Maharashtra readers too will know it.

Today’s song is from a religious film (labelled as ‘social’ film in HFGK) – Alakh Niranjan-1950.

1950 was the final year of the decade of the 1940s and matters which took place in this period had tremendous impact on the coming decade of 1951 to 1960. The rush of Muslim artists to their Utopia- Pakistan, had slowed down and the new entrants to replace them here were in the process of solidifying their presence. The extraordinary success of the Mythological and Religious films in the 1940s decade, with films like Bharat milap, Ram Rajya and Har Har Mahadev gave impetus to such films in the 50s decade, peaking their numbers to 124 in the period 1951 to 1960.

Today’s song is from a very old film- 92 years old, to be exact – Bala Joban-1934.

An obvious question comes to mind that when today’s readers do not know or even never heard about the old time actors, when the songs are absolutely old style which are not at all likeable and when the singers and the composers test our patience, why should we read about these films ?

These old film articles are not for entertainment purposes, but they are the records for the historical times, reminders of the artists who made the foundation of today’s film industry stronger and which give information on the bygone times, styles of music and singing etc. These matters are valuable and beyond any entertainment or monetary values !
