The first social drama TV serial (also called soap operas) on Doordarshan was ‘Humlog’ (1984). The huge success of this TV serial prompted other producers to come out with soap operas which needed to be telecasted only on Doordarshan as no private TV channels were in operation at that time. They had to find the free slots on Doordarshan which became difficult as years passed. Doordarshan generally accepted the TV serials ranging from 13, 26 and at most 52 episodes with few exceptions. The restriction of the number of episodes meant that more number of TV Serial makers could be accommodated apart from ensuring the TV serials were not unnecessarily stretched at the cost of their qualitative contents.

Today’s song is from the film 25th July-(1951).
This is the second film in succession having a title, beginning with only a number, from which I have discussed songs. Surprisingly, as per the Film Title Index book by Hamraz ji, there are as many as 53 films , whose titles start with numericals, during the period 1931 to 2012. I am not considering film titles starting with “Ek”, because though a number, it is written in words – for example Ek thi Ladki etc. Such films are actually 206 in numbers for the same period. Let us take a look at a few film titles from the lot of 53 films….

Today’s song is from a debut making film ‘Ek Aurat’ from 1948.
This is one of those 206 films made between 1931 to 2012, whose title started with the word ‘EK’ – the most favourite prefix of the filmmakers. Out of these 206 films, 32 films started with ‘Ek Aur. . .’. Just a trivia !

The decade of the 1950s was a time when, having got our independence in 1947, the whole nation was now busy reconstructing our country to our choice. This was the time when family values, importance of joint families, religion, law and order, Nehru’s socialistic pattern etc. were being reestablished. With all this, the turmoil in the society could not be isolated. It had its effects on the social atmosphere, markets, businesses, housing and of course the films.

Today (13 June 2023)is the birth centenary of Prem Dhawan (13 June 1923-7 May 2001).
When I was growing up, I knew him as the lyricist of patriotic songs. Among his most well known songs to me were “O mera rang de basanti chola” from “Shaheed”(1965), “Ae mere pyaare watan tujhpe dil qurbaan” from “Kabuliwala”(1961) and “Chhodo kal ki baaten kal ki baat puraani” from Hum Hindustani(1960). Though I knew him mainly as a lyricist, sometimes he would double up as lyricist cum music director, as in “Shaheed”(1965) and “Pavitra Paapi”(1970).
