Today’s song is from the film Dharmveer-1937.

This film was released 6 years after the Talkie film started. Just before the advent of Talkie films, Parsi theatre and other drama companies were the only Entertainment sources. Parsi Theatre was famous and most successful because it travelled all over India to perform. They used special reserved Trains to carry people and sets, drapery etc for their company from kashmir to kanyakumari and Gujarat to Rangoon. The success of Parsi Theatre was attributed to Pt. Narayan Prasad Betaab, Pt. Radheshyam Kathavachak, Agha Hashra Kashmiri and Master Fida Hussain – called the four Pillars of Dramas.

Today’s song is from a one time famous and honoured film from the Prabhat Films – Amar Jyoti-1936.

This is one of those films which tried something new through a story – a story of a lady rebel who became a Sea Pirate. Right from the silent era first film in 1913 till 1936, it was something daring for a film story. It was the first of its type.Later on also, for whatever unknown reasons, very few films were made on pirates. When Prabhat decided on this story, the big question was who to be chosen for the main role. Durga khote’s name was finalised as she looked suitable for the role of a desperate yet kind and strong yet lovable character of the woman pirate.

Today, the 12th of July is the 70th birthday of Sulakshana Pandit, one of the most underrated and unlucky actor/playback singer of the 1970s and 1980s. I have discussed her brief bio in one of my earlier posts here.

For readers who are interested in knowing more about her and also how she is doing today, can watch her video interview here and also a short video by her younger brother, the famous Jatin Pandit (part of the composer duo Jatin Lalit) here.

Today’s song is from a special film from the early era of the Hindi Talkie films – Mahageet-1937.

In 1645, German Mathematician Ethonius Kircher, during his usual work, accidentally found that unmoving pictures, if seen quickly in a chronicled manner could give the feel of movement. He made a box for this and named it ” Kircher Magic Lamp” aka Kitoscope. This is considered as the birth of the idea of the films. Over a period of 250 years, Edison made his first prototype Kinetoscope in 1891. Its improved version was exhibited on 14-4-1894. However, the French Lumier Brothers made a Cinematograph and it was commercially presented on 28-12-1895. By a strange coincidence, it was done in an ” Indian Salon” in the Grand Cafe Hotel in Paris.

Today’s song is from the film Jwala-1938.

It was a regular Costume film made by Master Vinayak’s Huns Pictures. The film had a cast of Ratnaprabha, Chandra Mohan, Ashalata, Mandhare, Vinayak, Rajni and others. Music Director was Debutante Dhamman Khan, assisted by the veteran Dada Chandekar. Dhamman Khan was one of those giants of classical music who had developed an urge (call it itch) to try their hand at composing film music,do a film or two and return to their own comfort zone again.
Some such other examples are Bhurji khan(Kurukshetra-33), Ameer saab(Nirdosh abla-35), Nawab Khan(Mirza sahiban-35) Wamanrao Sadolikar(Naganand-35…this is C.Ramchandra’s First film as a Hero. The film ran for just ONE day !),Abdul Kareem Khan (Maut ka Toofan-35 and Voh kaun-35), Master Giyasuddin (Typist girl-35) etc etc.

Today’s song is from the film Apna Ghar-1942.

This film was the remake of the Marathi film “आपले घर ” (Aaple Ghar i.e. Our Home). Very surprisingly, it was made in both languages by Circo Production, a film company famous for making Hindi films. Usually, the bilingual-Marathi/Hindi films were made in Poona and Kolhapur by either Shantaram’s Prabhat Films or Master Vinayak’s Huns Pictures at Kolhapur. But then, the owner of the CIRCO (Cine Industries Recording COmpany), Chimanlal Trivedi was a person exclusive in the industry. He produced films taking the best from the industry- actors, directors or the music directors. He floated 5 successful film companies and one stage drama company. He had close relations with the top political leaders of India. After his death, his entire family settled in the USA. Normally, very few articles are written about exclusive producers (who are NOT usual directors). Here is more information on this unique personality.

It has been exactly 619 days from my last post on this blog. There are many reasons, but most important was the paucity of time. Two years ago I accepted a part time job with a prestigious telecom company, which is a home based desk job. Although I work 4 hours a day, it still makes it that much harder to find time for those things that you love to do.

Saga Of Sleepless Nights – 10
– – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –

raat bhar muaa sone naa de. . .

This snippet line is from a song that has not made it on the blog as yet. The film is ‘Vidhaata’ from 1982. This snippet line is from the naughty song “Saat Saheliaan Khadi Khadi, Fariyaad Sunaayen Ghadi Ghadi” (YT link). The song is kind of an item song that is performed on screen by a bearded and plump Shammi Kapoor lip syncing the voice of Kishore Kumar, with a harmonium in front of him, as he leads a local get together into a sort of celebration song. I am sure most readers will be familiar with this song. The lyrics are kind of raunchy, penned by Anand Bakshi. The song tells of the plight of seven friends whose husbands are in different professions. Each ‘saheli‘ tells of her woes as to how her husband does not let her sleep all night.

Rewind back 33 years earlier, to 1949. Another song that tells a similar story – the lady has the same complain, that her companion did not let her sleep all night. That the entire night was spent tossing and turning, and the night passed in this uljhan only.
