Today’s song is from the film Badi Baat-1944.

During the second world war period 1939-1945, a lot of Black marketing flourished and few anti-socials became rich having a lot of unaccounted money. As such, during the war period the British Government had imposed Rationing of various essential items including food items, sugar, oil, Kerosene, Petrol and even Raw Film supply. This provided a golden opportunity to these people to start Black of the rationed items. Needy people and those who could afford, enriched these people. Now, they did not know what to do with this unaccounted money.

Today’s song is from the film Albeli-1945.

There were two more films with the same title, in 1955 and 1974. Its male variety-Albela- was made 4 times, in 1951, 1871, 1990 1nd 2001. This film was made by Talwar productions, Calcutta. The Music Director was G.A. Chishti. A very interesting observation is that after Partition, 80 % of the Muslim MDs who migrated to Pakistan were ordinary composers in India, giving music only to B and C grade films here. However, in Pakistan all these MDs became A grade MDs, became famous and had many films on their hands. All of them prospered.

There was ,however, one exception and that was Ghulam Haider. He was an A grade MD in India, but failed miserably in Pakistan. Does this speak volumes of the quality of Pakistan film music in any way ? A point to note was that after the crop of migrated MDs retired, the Pak musical industry was in doldrums, because there was no second line to take over – unlike in India !

Today’s song is from the film ‘Taqdeer’ (1943).

This was the film in which 2 great artistes came together along with 2 other great actors. Mehboob Khan who produced and directed this film, introduced Nargis, first time as an adult heroine. The hero was Motilal and his father’s role was done by actor Chandra Mohan. In real life also, Chandramohan always treated Motilal as his son. Incidentally, the name of Motilal, in his childhood period in this film was PAPPU ! If the film was made today, Motilal would have elected to leave the film instead of having his name as PAPPU !!

Today’s song is from the film Jungle Princess-1942.

From the very first decade of Talkie films, a new Genre of Hindi films started in India and that was ” Jungle Films’. Animals like Elephants, Lions and Tigers were no novelty in India, like the western world. In fact, till our Independence, India was known as a country of Elephants, Lions and Tigers. When India was not well known in the world, people in the western countries thought that Elephants, Lions, and Tigers, along with Snakes etc roam about on Indian roads freely !

The film was made by Minerva Movietone. It was directed by Sohrab Modi. Music was by Meer Saheb and all the 11 songs of the film were written by a young, ambitious poet Ameer Haider Kamaal Amrohavi – who later on became Kamaal Amrohi, a director and husband of Meena Kumari. Today’s song is from a hit film ‘Gunsundari’ (1948).

What is the formula to make a hit film ? No one ever had any answer for this question, so far in the film industry. Had there been an answer, 99 % of films would have been hits. However, in my opinion, there could be only one answer – LUCK ! Even if you analyse all the hit films till today, I doubt if the right answer could be found.

Today’s song is from the film ‘Naya Raasta’ (1953).

Today is 19th September, and this is my 14th post in this month already. Before this post, I had written 11 posts continually every day, but I had to break the marathon as the final work on my two new books came up and I had to attend to that. I completed that and work for my 7th book started immediately. Thus, writing posts and working on the books takes up my whole day, coupled with the routine household duties and other jobs. Sometimes I wish I had at least 30 hours in a day !

Today’s song is from the film Patit Pawan-1955.

Most of our readers are aware of “Same name confusion”. It is a phenomenon in which 2 or more artistes having similar names operated in Hindi films, during the same period, causing severe damage to the less known artiste when his films were credited-unjustly- to the filmography of the well known artiste of the similar name. In an industry where from 1931 to 2000 period itself more than 7000 artistes acted in the Hindi films, it was bound to occur and it did take place. I have done research on this matter and have clarified the different artistes, numbering to over 100, who were involved in such a confusion. These are included in my first 2 books also.
