Archive for the ‘Songs of 1942’ Category

We have so far discussed as many as ten songs from “Bhakt Surdas”(1942) and that includes lots and lots of K L Saigal songs. Talking of K L Saigal songs, we have been discussing one K L Saigal song daily for the last six weeks and so far we have discussed as many as 75 K L Saigal songs. If we continue to discuss one K L Saigal song a day, then we will reach the century of K L Saigal songs in a month’s time.

Hindi movie songs is a vast ocean and so far we in this blog have only been to the surface with occasional plunges. We have only covered a small fraction of all the songs that are lying out there. However, when it comes to songs of K L Saigal, we have made considerable progress. Almost all K L Saigal Hindi movie songs that are available on youtube have been disussed. The remaining Hindi filmsongs of K L Saigal are not available on youtube/dailymotion. So one needs to upload these hitherto unavailable songs in order to discuss them here. And that is what I have been doing with K L saigal movie song these days.

Most Hindi movie songs have been written by lyricists who were around at the time when these songs were composed. But there are some cases where the lyricists lived in an earlier era and they were dead and buried/cremated long before their creations were used in Hindi movie songs. For instance, Hindi movies have used songs written by Ghalib,Meera bai etc who lived in the 19th century and 15th century respectively. All the songs that one tended to listen to at the stroke of 8 AM in radio Ceylon in the past decades have been covered and now the remaining K L Saigal songs are more rare as far as many listeners, including I am concerned.

In my younger days, K L Saigal was a “boring” singer, but now I can not have enough of K L Saigal songs. I find listening to K L Saigal songs a divine experience these days, as it reminds me of those days several decades ago, when most radios in India would play radio Ceylon in early mornings. 7-30 to 8 AM was the most “boring” period on Radio Ceylon, as it was during this time that “puraani filmon ke geet” were played, culminating into a K L Saigal song as the last song.

Here is a wonderful song that I discovered just now. To be honest I had discovered it some one year back but I had not listened to it and then I had forgotten all about it. Just now I listened to this song and I was amazed at how modern this song sounds even today, even though it is a song from as far back as 1942.
