Today is the birth anniversary of C.Ramchandra, one of the Best Music Directors the Hindi film industry had. He has left us long back, but his iconic songs live on, giving us pleasure even today and they will continue to do so in future as well, no matter what the current generation likes. Looking at the Remixes of C Ramchandra’s famous songs like, “Mere piya gaye Rangoon”, or “Sunday ke Sunday”, or even “Gore gore,o baanke chhore”, it is certain that his songs have a magical spell even over New Generations !

Though I would like to be more systematic in discussing the songs in the blog, I have not been able to put my intentions to practice. One of my aims these days is to discuss a song of 1930s every day in a bid to cover all the available songs of 1930s. Another aim is to cover all the songs of movies. Yet another aim is to ensure that songs from movies as yet unrepresented in the blog are discussed in the blog. Then there are artists nearing their landmarks or artists having their anniversaries and so their songs must be discussed.

Forgotten Melodies of the 1940s – 4
———————————————————

I have been looking for some rare songs which are generally not available on YT. Some of them are gems which are required to be brought to the notice of the wider section of the admirers of Hindi film music. Thanks to some of the collectors of old Hindi film songs and also thanks to internet technologies, such gems can now be stored in mp3 format and easily shared. One of the websites which has become a kind of a store house of old Hindi film songs in mp3 format is Dr Surjit Singh’s Website. With a large collection, the attendant problem is in searching for the required songs/films. One must be extremely patient in searching for the required songs or films as the records of mp3 clips have not been maintained in any particular order as of now.

Basics of music- Part I (Swar and Saptak)
—————————————–
In this blog, we have discussed over eleven thousand songs till now. When I use the word “discuss”, I mostly mean that we have provided lyrics of the song, provided the audio/video link of the song and mentioned the names of artists singing the song and performing in the picturisation. We sometimes discuss the movies and artists of these songs in detail.

VINTAGE SHAMSHAD BEGUM…..Song No- 5
——————————————

1947 was an important year not only for the Nation, but also for the Film industry that sadly said ‘Good Bye’ to many of its popular Muslim artistes, who chose to migrate to the new nation PAKISTAN, created on the basis of Religion. The departure of many talented and popular, successful artistes and technicians was an immediate blow to the film industry, but the void thus created was soon filled up with its own personnel ‘waiting in the wings’ to take over. India never had a shortage of talented people, but it was Pakistan, who faced problems in establishing its New Film Industry. Their major problem was shortage of Financiers and Producers-who were mostly Hindus and who either shifted to India or got killed in the riots and their studios were burnt down by the rioters.

VINTAGE SHAMSHAD BEGUM….Song No. 4
————————————–

Today’s song is from film Doosri Shaadi-1947. This is a duet with Ram Kamlani.

“Shaadi” seems to be quite a favourite Title word for Hindi film producers. There are very funny Titles with the word Shaadi. To start with, there was a film called ” Third wife ” made by Madan Theatres in 1931-the First year of Talkie films in India. Those days Polygamy was very common ( and why not ? King Dashrath of Ramayana had also 3 wives. Even in Mythology Lord Krishna had an astronomical figure of 16008 wives. Mortals today are struggling to manage even ONE wife ! ). Doosri Shadi was made in 1947 and then it was followed by a move practicable Pehli shaadi in 1953. So the number finally came down to a manageable number.

Remembering Shamshad Begum on the second anniversary of her passing away (23rd April 2013). Born in Lahore on 14th April 1919, Shamshad Begum had an inclination towards singing right from her school days. Her school principal impressed with her singing, made her sing the classroom prayers, something which Naushad captilised elegantly in ‘Dard’ (1947) for a group song.
