“Lahore” (1949) was a nice movie which was based on the aftermath of India’s partition following independence. This movie was a Jaimini Dewan production and it was directed by M L Anand. The movie had Karan Dewan, Nargis, Kanan Devi, Om Prakash, Randhir, Balakram, Ram Avtaar etc in it.

I am sure the number of folks would be very few, those who have not heard the iconic song, ‘Mere Piyaa Gaye Rangoon’ . The film Patanaga comes from the year 1949, which is considered as a watershed year in the annals of Hindi film music. So many wonderful movies with great music and great songs were released in this year, that it became a memorable year in terms of rising popularity of film music in India. The film is produced under the banner of Verma Films, Bombay and is directed by the distinguished Harnam Singh Rawail.

Sajjad Hussain, described as the only original music director of Hindi movie had a chequered career and during his three decades long career he only worked in 17 movies and composed about 100 songs. I have been discussing songs from “Daroga jee” (1949) and it is very interesting to find one song after another, all of them meant to be female solos,meant to be picturised on Nargis. I wonder if the hero of this movie, namely P Jairaj too had any songs in to lip sync or whether he was just a glorified extra in it.

“Daroga jee” (1949) was a one woman show all the way. This movie, produced by Nargis Arts (Nargis’ home production) was meant to show Nargis’ ability to sing all kinds of songs. So far as many as seven songs picturised on Nargis have been discussed in this blog, in which she was shown singing romantic song, broken heart song, bullying shopkeepers song, etc etc.

“Daroga Ji” (1949) was produced by Nargis Arts, the home production of Nargis and the movie was meant to promote the then nascent acting career of Nargis. The songs (almost all of them female solo songs picturised on Nargis) were meant to showcase Nargis’ acting talent in different moods.

“Gareebi” (1949) is a movie about which very little information is available on internet. Fortunately, we have our own encyclopaedia Mr Arunkumar Deshmukh, who was not only around when these movies were released, but on many cases he even watched such movies and took notes.
