“Dholak” (1951) was an amazing musical blockbuster and I am realising this fact only just now. An interesting fact about this musical blockbuster is that the songs of this movie were sung by not one or two established singers, but by several singers. The variety that they brought to the songs of this movie was just wonderful.

Bollywood movies have created some big myths which is now believed by everyone. One such myth is that it is possible to sit on a grand piano and play it while singing a song. In reality, playing such a big piano is so difficult that a player playing it can in no way sing as well. But our Bollywood heroes are shown merrily singing away while playing the piano, which incidentally is shown creating music of all other instuments, viz violin, guitar, dholak, flute, etc in addition to its own music.

In Bollywood movies, western music was used as early as 1940s itself. Early pioneers of this kind of music were C Ramchandra, Vinod etc.

Here we find Naushad using “western” kind of music. In fact it is more like a fusion of desi and western music.
