Asha Parekh, who acted as a child artist for several years, first acted as a grown up in Aasha ( 1957), though she was not credited there. She then acted in Dil Deke Dekho, Ham Hindustani and Ghooghat.

Most leading heroes had their standard playback singers. Thus Raj Kapoor had Mukesh, Shammi Kapoor and Rajendra Kumar had Rafi, Vishwajeet had Hemant Kumar, Sunil Dutt had Mahendra Kapoor ( in B R Chopra movies) etc.

By now I have posted more than a thousand songs from the golden era of Bollywood music. It can be easily noticed that lyrics played a very important roles in the success of these songs. In 1980s and later, lyrics lost its importance in the minds of the music directors and from that time onwards, songs lost their soul and their longevity. However great the singing and music may be, unless the singer and music director has a good song to work with, the song cannot hope to become popular.

These days, we take many things in life for granted. But that was not the case in the past. In India of 1950s, for example, one needed permits for even small things in life- viz drinking. Yes, though Indians had adopted democracy, the official mindset was very much that of socialism.

“Chhaliya”(1960) was a Raj Kapoor movie and it had Mukesh singing for him as usual. But its music team was not Shailendra and Shankar Jaikishan. Rather, Qamar Jalalabadi had written the songs and Kalyanji Anandji, then in their early years as music directors had got this big break to compose music in this movie. This movie incidentally was the debut movie for director Manmohan Desai as well.
