Lata Mangeshkar is the highest represented artist of this blog. Still there are thousands of her songs still to be posted. And if I want to really pick and choose, it is just not feasible in the absence of the explicit information as is available in the case of Mohammed Rafi songs, in the excel sheet. So I am relying on instinct only and trying to feel my way into a maze of Lata solo songs. Every day at least one solo song of Lata Mangeshkar is posted. The other day the last and final song from ‘Saanjh Aur Savera “ a solo by Lata was posted, which was in my list.

I have discussed as many as six songs from “Ambar” (1952). And interestingly enough there are still songs from this movie that are not yet covered !

Rote hain nainaa gham ke maare

Despite the words of this song, the picturisation of this song is anything but melancholic. This song is a dance song, where Cuckoo and her troop of dancers sing and dance this song. The dance performance is being watched by many people including Nargis, who is watching it disinterestedly. Her face perks up when she finds Raj Kapoor joining in the dance performance in disguise. Raj Kapoor is so well disguised that he sings in the voice of Rafi, instead of the usual Mukesh. 🙂 For that matter, Raj Kapoor dancing is in itself a good enough disguise. 🙂

Mera dil mujhe waapas kar do

“Ambar” (1952) is a lesser known movie starring Raj Kapoor and Nargis. This movie apparently did not do well at the box office.

Tootegi na pyaar ki dor

It is noticed that stories of Hindi movies of early days used to be far more progressive and open minded than the movies that came up in later decades. For example, leading ladies refusing to wear swimming costumes on the plea of this being against Indian culture was a phenomenon of 1970s. In 1940s and 1950s, leading ladies would be shown diving in water not only while wearing sari, but in more swimming friendly costumes too.

Shamaa jali parwaanaa aaya shamaa jali

Songs picturised on Raj Kapoor were mostly sung by Mukesh, but there were occasions when other singers have also sung for Raj Kapoor. In fact, in many earlier movies of Raj Kapoor, it was Rafi who gave playback for him.

Ham tum ye bahaar
Posted by: Atul on: June 15, 2009
I have listened to this song for the first time only today, even though this song is from a very old movie called “Ambar” (1952). I was not even aware of this movie, but it turns out that this movie had names like Raj Kapoor, Nargis in it, as also dancers like Helen, Cuckoo etc. So this movie must have some nice dance numbers, was my first impression.
