‘Do Boond Paani’ (1971) was produced by Naya Sansar, and directed by Khwaja Ahmad Abbas. The subject matter of this social film is the problem of water scarcity in Rajashan. The star cast consists of Simi Grewal, Jalal Agha, Kiran Kumar, Madhuchanda, Prakash Thapa, Sajjan, Rasheed Khan, Pichoo Kapur, Amrit Oberoi, Ghanshyam, Hoor Banu, Asha, Mona, Anamika, Yunus Parwez, Tanya, Ravikant, Mehboob, Shankar, Bishan Khanna, Bhagwan Sinha, Hanuman, Ramzan, Maruti, Mohammad etc.

Recently (on 3 august), we were celebrating birth anniversaries of two legends of Hindi cinema, Shakeel Badayuni and Jaidevji. Atulji had posted a few melodious songs sent by contributors with all the information about these personalities, their contributions, movies, etc. As a tribute to Shakeel Badayuni, I was listening to many songs penned by him and finally decided to send the song “O jaane waalon jaa o na…” of Mother India, to pay tribute to SB. While writing the words of this song, I was thinking about another song picturized on the same situation, natural disaster, where people of the village/town are leaving because of the drought condition.

This is one song about which I had no idea. And like me, most people are ignorant about the existence of this song from an obscure movie called “Do Boond Paani” (1971).

Great songs are not always the preserve of hit movies. I have realised that many great songs were composed for movies that flopped at the box office. The movies were forgotten , but the songs were not.
