shaam-e-gham ki kasam aaj ghamgeen hain ham

The evening in the first line turned into a night of sadness when I came to know from ASAD Group that Khayyam saab is no more with us. His popular songs started ringing in my ears. Those were the songs with which I have grown up from a teenager to a senior citizen. I had a disturbed sleep last night as some of his songs resonated intermittently in my mind. In the morning, I thought that the best way to get out of such feeling is to write a tributary article for Khayyam saab.

Muzzafar Ali, the producer-director of some of the parallel films has been very proud of the Awadhi culture. His father was the raja of Kotwara which is located in Lakhimpur Kheri district, a part of Awadh region. Moreover, he had completed his schooling in Lucknow, the centre of Awadhi culture. His sensibility towards Awadhi culture can be judged from his films, Gaman’ (1978), ‘Umrao Jaan’ (1981), Aagaman’ (1984), ‘Anjuman’ (1986) and the last one, “Jaanisaar’ (2015) with Awadh as background. “More than a ‘royal’, I am ‘loyal’ to my root – Awadh” says Muzzafar Ali.

IN CUSTODY (1994) also known as MUHAFIZ was a film belonging to the parallel cinema based on Booker award nominated novel by the same name written by Anita Desai. The film was produced under the banner of Merchant Ivory Productions and was directed by Ismail Merchant. The star cast included Shashi Kapoor, Shabana Azmi, Om Puri, Sushma Seth, Neena Gupta, Tinnu Anand, Ajay Sahani, Prayag Raj, Virendra Saxena etc. The film picked up published nazms and ghazals of Faiz Ahmed Faiz for songs which were jointly composed by Ustad Zakir Hussain and Ustad Sultan Khan. I had set out in detail the story of the film while discussing ae jazba-e-dil gar main chaahoon. For the sake of the background, I will give here only a gist of the story of the film.

Ever since the talkies came into being, Shakespeare’s plays have been one of the most favourites literary sources that have been used in Hindi films after suitably adapting them. The first talkie film adapted from Shakespeare’s play ‘Hamlet’ is stated to be ‘Khoon Ka Khoon’ (1935) directed by Sohrab Modi. Shakespeare’s plays which have been the favourite with Hindi film industry beside ‘Hamlet’ are ‘Macbeth’, ‘Othello’ and ‘Romeo & Juliet’.
