Today’s song is from a Mythological film – Tilottama-1954.
Made by Basant Pictures of Homi Wadia, it was directed by the Trick Master Babubhai Mistry. Music was by the multitasking expert S.N.Tripathi. The cast included Chitra, Kailash, Maruti, Babu raje, Indira Bansal, Heera Sawant, B.M.Vyas and a long list of small time actors, who were regulars in such films. The Lyrics were by G.S.Nepali.
Tilottama was an extraordinarily beautiful apsara from the Swarga. She was especially created by Vishwakarma on Brahma ji’s suggestion. The first chapter of mahabharata – The Adi Parva – mentions that Maharshi Narad detailed the story of Tilottama to Pandavas and warned them that one Draupadi as a wife to 5 Pandavas could become a cause of conflict and that they must be careful about it.

Today’s song is from the Mythological film Navratri-1955.
Made by Bhagyodaya Pictures, Bombay, it was directed by Raman B. Desai. It was produced by R.U.Patel and Natwar Shyam. The music was by the king of Melody – Chitragupt, ably assisted by Dilip Dholakia. The cast of the film was Nirupa Roy, Manahar desai, Sapru, S.N.Tripathi, Lalita Pawar, Kumkum etc. Songs were by G.S.Nepali (6) and Bharat Vyas (2).
Two major actors, who featured in many religious films in Hindi were Manhar Desai and Shahu Modak. You may be surprised to know that both were Christians. Actors who were not Hindus and doing Hindu Gods’ roles in Hindi films, is not new. I remember, there was an actor, Syed Hasan Ali Zaidi aka Mijjan Miyan, with New Theatres, Calcutta. He did the role of Bhakta Pooran in a film with this title in 1933. Just before the release of the film, there were communal riots in Calcutta.

Today’s song is from the film Safar-1946. This was a film made by Filmistan, directed by a comparatively new person-Bibhuti Mitra. The lyricist was G S Nepali and composer was C.Ramchandra.
This was C Ramchandra’s first film after joining Filmistan. His friend, Kavi Pradeep, who was close to S Mukherjee of Filmistan, had brought C Ramchandra to this company. Now it was imperative for C Ramchandra to make his first film a musical hit, to establish himself, impress the owners and earn respect.

About a month back, I stumbled upon a song ‘aankhen to huyi band magar dard jagaa re’ from the film BEGUM (1945) sung by Ashok Kumar. Until then, I had neither heard of this song nor of the film which had Ashok Kumar and Naseem Bano in the lead roles. I liked the song so much that I must have listened to it umpteen times. The song is written by Gopal Singh Nepali and set to music by Hari Prasanna Das (H P Das) whose name also I heard for the first time. From the Indian Film Trade Data website, I observed that H P Das had given music to 10 Hindi films between 1935 and 1948 including 2-3 films jointly with Manna Dey.

The experiences of listening to songs sung by different singers are different. When one listens to a song sung by Mukesh, one expects a song that one would begin to hum as soon as one listens to it. One also expects the fabled Midas touch of Mukesh in full flow which ensured that most songs sung by Mukesh became popular.
