During late 1960s and early 1970s, when I was a young kid, I hated the time period between 7-30 AM to 8 AM, because it was during this time that “Puraani filmon ke geet” programme was played on the air by Radio Ceylon. In this programme, songs from 1930s, 1940s and even 1950s were played. The singers were often names that I had never heard of. And their singing styles were found amusing by kids like me.

“Sheeshaa” (1952) is an obscure movie that had Sajjan, Nargis, Kumkum, Amar, Achla Sachdev, Vimla, Cuckoo etc in it.I have no idea about the fate of this movie at the box office, but I guess that this movie failed to set the box office on fire.

“Gauhar” (1953) is an obscure movie with equally obscure songs. This movie was an All India Pictures production movie. It was directed by F H Hassan. The movie had Agha, Bina Ray, Cuckoo, Vijayalaxmi, Chanchal, Chaman Puri, Charlie etc in it.

“Dil e Naadaan” (1953) is a movie that had Talat Mehmood, Shyama and Peace Kanwal in it. This movie, which apparently was a love triangle, had some nice songs in it. I have already discussed three songs from this movie.

I have mentioned it that drunkard songs, in which an actor is seen getting drunk and singing asong is mainly a preserve of male actors. On the other hand, a woman getting drunk and making a spectacle of herself is considered rather unheard of. That is why one rarely finds songs in which female actors are seen singing drunkard songs.

“Shamaa” (1961) is a movie starring Vijay Dutt (?), Suraiyya, Nimmi, Kammo, Leela Mishra, Tuntun etc. To me, this movie is notable more for its songs. I have discussed as many as five songs from this movie so far.

“Mirza Ghalib” (1954) is a movie based on the life of Mirza Ghalib, one of the foremost shayars of Urdu language who was long dead and gone by the time this movie (or for that matter Hindi movie industry itself) came into existence. This movie is one of the rare movies, where the lyrics were written by the person on whose life the movie was based, and lyrics were written almost one century before the movie was made.
