Here is a lovely “roadside tamasha” song that I stumbled upon recently. This song is from “Rail Ka Dibba” (1953) which was one of the earliest movies in which Shammi Kapoor acted. This song does not feature him though.

I was under the impression that Suraiyya’s singing-acting career was over in 1950s, but she also had a few movies released in 1960s. It is another matter that her best days were behind her by that time.

Nukta cheen hai gham e dil

I had not heard this ghazal from “Mirza Ghalib” (1954) earlier, though I had read about it. I heard it for the first time only just now. What a song it is ! The lyrics were written by Ghalib, one of the greatest shayars of Urdu literature, and the movie is of course based on his life. He was long gone by that time, but his poetry has been enlivened by the superb voice of Suraiyya and accompanied by just the right music composed by Ghulam Mohammad. Most people will never read the literary works of poets like Ghalib, but it is songs like this that will make laymen aware of the riches that a poet like Ghalib left behind for us to savour.

Dil e naadaan tujhe huaa kyaa hai

“Mirza Ghalib” (1954) was a movie based on the life of Mirza Ghalib, who was one of the greatest Urdu poets of all time. This meant that the makers of this movie did not have to hire a lyricist. Mirza Ghalib’s poems themselves served as the lyrics. And what superb lyrics they are too.
