This song can be put into several categories. This song narrowly misses from becoming a “movie opening song”. The song begins immediately after the credits disappear from the screen. Guru Dutt and Mala Sinha are just married and it is their suhaag raat. But Guru Dutt, instead of taking interest in his newly wedded bride, complains that he cannot get sleep because of her.

I thought that a woman getting drunk and singing a drunkard song in an Indian movie began only in 1960s, but I was wrong. This began in 1950s itself.

If one just goes through the lyrics of the song, this song may not appear to be much of a song. But just listen to this song. This song is sung so nicely that the song grows up on the listener and remains with him /her for several hours. It was on 31st July 1980 that Rafi left us for heavenly abode and the music world was suddenly a much poorer place. The vacuum that was created as a result of his demise could not be filled and that vacuum exists even today.

In my bid to clear the backlog of my old farmaishes, here is one song whose farmaish was given more than one year back. This song is from “Suhaagan” (1964). This song is a duet sung by Lata and Manna Dey. Madan Mohan is the music director. Madan Mohan teamed up with Raja Mehdi Ali Khan and Rajinder Krishan in most of his movies and on the other hand he rarely worked with the leading names (Shailendra, Majrooh Sultanpuri, Sahir Ludhianvi and Hasrat Jaipuri). But in this movie, he worked with Hasrat Jaipuri. And what superb lyrics Hasrat Jaipuri came up with in this movie !

“Baaz” (1953) is a movie that brought Guru Dutt and O P Nayyar together for the first time. This movie has Guru Dutt as well as O P Nayyar in rather unfamilar roles. Guru Dutt is shown riding a horse (that makes this song a “horse” song) and O P Nayyar composes a music that is so un O P Nayyarish (stated with the benefit of hind sight, of course).

Though most songs in Bollywood movies are based on desi values, there are “westernised” songs in Bollywood as well. They are mainly songs which are sung in clubs/ parties, and are often accompanied by dance, either by someone like Helen, or a party dance where several people are seen dancing “phoren” style.

In the world in general and in India in particular, it often so happens that a person’s value is not appreciated during his life time. But when he departs, rich tributes are paid to him and his creations, which never sold during his life start selling like hot cakes. The beneficiaries fully capitalise on the newfound sealeability of the works of the departed soul.

I have mentioned it many a times and I need to mention it again, that many of the well known iconic songs of Bollywood, whatever be their topics, are the creations of Ravi, though many people may not be aware of this fact.
