Dekhi zamaane ki yaari bichhde sabhi baari baari

Posted on: August 1, 2010

It was on 31st July 1980 that Rafi left us for heavenly abode and the music world was suddenly a much poorer place. The vacuum that was created as a result of his demise could not be filled and that vacuum exists even today.

The glorious golden era of Hindi movie music began to lose the pillars of their golden era from 1960s onwards one by one, and by the time Rafi departed, only a handful of stalwarts from the golden era were still around.

IN a sense, all these greats, who nurtured and nourished the Hindi movie magic left us one by one- “bichhde sabhi baari baari”. And this sentiment was expressed in a song by Rafi as far back as in 1959 in a song of “Kaaghaz Ke Phool” (1959) which sounds so true and so prophetic.

Here is this song from “Kaaghaz ke Phool” (1959) which is sung by Rafi. Kaifi Azmi is the lyricist and S D Burman composed the music. This song was picturised on Guru Dutt.

Song-Dekhi zamaane ki yaari bichhde sabhi baari baari (Kaagaz Ke Phool) (1959) Singer-Rafi, Lyrics-Kaifi Azmi, MD-S D Burman

Lyrics

dekhi zamaane ki yaari
bichhde sabhi, bichhde sabhi baari baari
arre dekhi zamaane ki yaari
bichhde sabhi baari baari
kyaa le ke milen ab duniyaa se,
aansoo ke siwaa kuchh paas nahin
yaa phool hi phool the daaman mein,
yaa kaanton ki bhi aas nahin
matlab ki duniyaa hai saari
bichhde sabhi,
bichhde sabhi baari baari
arre dekhi zamaane ki yaari
bichhde sabhi baari baari
bichhde sabhi baari baari

waqt hai meharbaan,
aarzoo hain jawaan
fikr kal ki karen,
itni fursat kahaan

waqt hai meharbaan,
aarzoo hain jawaan
fikr kal ki karen,
itni fursat kahaan
daur ye chaltaa rahe rang uchhaltaa rahe
roop machaltaa rahe, jaam badaltaa rahe
daur ye chaltaa rahe rang uchhaltaa rahe
roop machaltaa rahe, jaam badaltaa rahe
daur ye chaltaa rahe rang uchhaltaa rahe
roop machaltaa rahe, jaam badaltaa rahe
daur ye chaltaa rahe rang uchhaltaa rahe
roop machaltaa rahe, jaam badaltaa rahe
daur ye chaltaa rahe rang uchhaltaa rahe
roop machaltaa rahe, jaam badaltaa rahe
daur ye chaltaa rahe rang uchhaltaa rahe
roop machaltaa rahe, jaam badaltaa rahe

Yes, it is a song that tells an inevitable fact of life, that everyone whom we have met is bound to leave us some day.

Second part of the song :

daur ye chalata rahe rang uchhalata rahe
roop machalata rahe, jaam badalata rahe

raat bhar mahamaan hain bahaaren yahaan
raat gar dhal gayi phir ye khushiyaan kahaan
raat bhar mahamaan hain bahaaren yahaan
raat gar dhal gayi phir ye khushiyaan kahaan
pal bhar ki khushiyaan hain saari
pal bhar ki khushiyaan hain saari
pal bhar ki khushiyaan hain saari
badhane lagi, badhane lagi beqaraari
pal bhar ki khushiyaan hain saari
badhane lagi beqaraari

ud ja ud ja pyaase bhanvre, ras na milega kh’aron mien
kaagaz ke phul jahaan khilate hain, baith na un gulazaaro mein
naadan tamanna reti mien, ummid ki kashti kheti hai
ik haath se deti hai duniyaa, sau haathon se le leti hai
ye khel hai kab se jaari
bichhade sabhee, bichhade sabhi baari baari..
bichhde sabhi baari baari
arre dekhi zamaane ki yaari
bichhde sabhi baari baari

kyaa le ke milen ab duniyaa se,
aansoo ke siwaa kuchh paas nahin
yaa phool hi phool the daaman mein,
yaa kaanton ki bhi aas nahin
matlab ki duniyaa hai saari
bichhde sabhi,
bichhde sabhi baari baari

This is one of my favourite songs – Can somebody please explain the exact meaning of these lines
‘naadan tamanna reti mien, ummid ki kashti kheti hai’

Really impossible to explain. Just trying.
It means,” Your immature desire, hopes to row its boat in a dessert” So deep thoughts/lyric of late Kaifi Azmi. you very well know Boat can only row in water and you are expecting/hoping it.
Amazing.
