This song is the 100th duet of Rafi Sb and Geeta Dutt to be posted here on our blog.

As I was browsing the net earlier in the day, checking for articles and source material on Guru Dutt, I came across this she’er (couplet) which was written by the poet Kaifi Azmi in 1964, on hearing the news of Guru Dutt’s demise.

रहने को सदा दहर में आता नहीं कोई,
तुम जैसे गए ऐसे भी जाता नहीं कोई
माना की उजालों ने तुम्हें दाग़ दिये थे,
बे रात ढले शमा बुझाता नहीं कोई

rehne ko sadaa dehar mein aata nahin koi
tum jaise gaye aise bhi jaata nahin koi
maana ki ujaalon ne tumhen daagh diye the
be-raat dhale shama bujhaata nahin koi

It is true, no one comes in this world
To reside for ever
But the way you departed
No one even leaves that way
Granted that the brightness of flame
May have inflicted painful burns
But still, no one douses the lamp
Before the night comes to an end

Remembering Guru Dutt, the vital genius of Hindi cinema, on his anniversary today (9 july 2017). Had he been alive, he would have been 92 today.

5th June is celebrated as ‘World Environment Day’ all over the world every year. The theme for this year is “Connecting People to Nature“.

I am approaching today’s post in a different manner. Instead of going into the details of the environmental agencies, their history and purpose, the significant environmental issues being faced by humanity on this planet, etc. I am thinking of our Hindi films and their music. The nature is so intimately connected herein. We cannot imagine our Hindi Film Music without ‘connecting with nature’.

“Pyaasa” (1957) is a movie which touched the heart strings of the movie goers. It is the story of an artist who does not get his due in his life time but rich tributes are paid to him when he is presumed dead. But when he re appears again among his admirers, people who benefitted from his “death” are discomfited.

Like most music lovers, I too mostly know only about the better known songs of movies and I am blissfully unaware of the lesser known songs from these movies.

There were some movies, especially those made in late 1950s by Guru Dutt that took melancholy to new heights (Depths ?). The Hero, always played by Guru Dutt, would remain gloomy and morose and he would make those around him gloomy and morose too. At least that is the general impression I get whenever I hear the name Guru Dutt. And in his case, life imitated art. He as well as his wife Geeta Dutt let miserable lives in their last few years.

In the world in general and in India in particular, it often so happens that a person’s value is not appreciated during his life time. But when he departs, rich tributes are paid to him and his creations, which never sold during his life start selling like hot cakes. The beneficiaries fully capitalise on the newfound sealeability of the works of the departed soul.

There are many musical blockbuster movies whose songs are under represented and in some cases even unrepresented in this blog. But then the reason is that there are far too many gems lying there than need to be posted. There are literally a goldmine of great songs that are still left to be posted.

It is difficult to associate Guru Dutt with anything but a sad song, that too in a movie like “Pyyasa”. But it is a fact that he does not just sing melancholic songs in this movie. He sings romantic songs as well, difficult though it may be to believe.
